Square Enix Announce New Tomb Raider

By Ishaan . December 6, 2010 . 6:26am

Game Informer magazine’s January issue will be revealing a new Tomb Raider game developed by Crystal Dynamics, publisher Square Enix revealed today. It would appear the game will simply be titled “Tomb Raider” and tells an origin story about series protagonist Lara Croft.

Previously, rumours claimed that the next Tomb Raider game would be set on a Japanese island, after Lara’s ship gets wrecked. It would appear there was at least some truth to these, as Square’s press release mentions a shipwreck:

“After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach,” Square’s PR reads. “On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive.”

It continues: “Here begins the first adventure for a young and inexperienced Lara Croft in a story which charts the journey of an ordinary woman who finds out just how far she must go in order to stay alive.”

“Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider,” said Darrell Gallagher, Head of Studio, Crystal Dynamics. “This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other.”

The Game Informer issue in question will go on newsstands on December 11th, and will feature a ten-page exclusive look at the game.

Here’s the game’s logo, in case you’re curious:

  • Eh not really exciting

    • You did this in the Da Capo post, too, so I’m going to give you an early heads up — stop it. Now. If you aren’t interested in a game, and have nothing productive to say, don’t post in its comments thread.

      • so negative/indifferent comments arent allowed? Nice free speech guys

        • Jaxx-Leviathan

It is the duty of any community sites’ admins to discourage non-productive comments, especially when it is a continual habit of one person. Negative comments should at least elaborate on the reasons for ones opinion on the subject. Writing a single line of non-constructive disapproval is generally considered unnecessary and frowned upon.

          • yeah not twice. Maybe 20 times

  • Yes I love when games go back and establish an origin for the character. I love me some Lara Croft and that cover looks simply awesome. I cant wait to play the game though, potentially a highlight of 2011. I wonder if a trailer will be revealed for the VGA’s…

Uncharted 3 and Tomb Raider next year, …truly a golden era for adventurous games! So can not wait, and I hope they give Tomb Raider some simply stunningly awesome cutscenes!

    • I thought you hated prequels cause they were lazy? -.-‘

      • This doesnt seem like a prequel but more of a Reboot to Tomb Raider, so Im all for it. Lara has seemed to have so many trilogy series that its time to give her the justice she truly deserves and to tell us just how she even came to be.

  • karasuKumo

Sounds good, the last TR game I played was on the PS1 lol

    • RupanIII

Me too lol I actually really liked the first two. I’ll wait until I hear more about the gameplay but.. this is surprising, a reboot that actually sounds intriguing. I like the shipwreck theme and the idea of exploring an island, it sounds minimal, back to basics, which imo often has more impact than the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach.

  • Apollokids

Wooooooooooh Crystal Dynamics! Sony’s Rare! But unlike Rare, they are struggling to survive. That Lara looks good, that is a well done re-imagining of her likeness. Rugged and exotic but determined and forged.
I wouldn’t be surprised if one of her abilities was to stare her enemies to death! That expression says so much, yet holds back even more.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Are they really struggling? Unfortunate, because they make great games.

    • Aoshi00

She looks like a more realistic Lightning, *jiiiiiii* the stare of death :)

  • malek86

Mmh… I’m not sure we’ll be raiding any tombs in this one.

    • Why? I could easily see how it could turn into some quest in which some other group is on the island looking for some treasure with mythical powers that makes them want to take over the world through abundant riches, oh and maybe their are pirates!!! Excite!!!!

      • malek86

If this is anything like Trespasser (because honestly, that’s the first game that comes to mind when I read that description), the girl’s first priority should be surviving. In that case, I doubt she’d want to explore unknown ruins and take on military organizations and/or mystical evil forces.Though, if she did that and managed to get some huge treasure as a result, that would explain why she got such a big mansion. This is a reboot, so yeah.

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

December 11? That’s when the VGAs are… Maybe we’re getting a teaser trailer as well!

    • Hey, that’s a great point!

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Thanks! It just seems too weird to be a coincidence.

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

      ARKHAM CITY~~~~~~

That’s a nice logo. I liked II, Anniversary, Legend and GoL. Let’s see what they can do with this one.

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Yes!! It’ll be the Batman game to end all Batman games (until they make a game out of Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns). Also, Saints Row 3 and the Del Toro game for me… if they show up. Too bad they never debut Japanese games there. :P

The Logo, ironically, reminds me of Uncharted.

        • [The Hunter] Doomrider

YES. YES! I am so uncontrollably hyped for that game it’s not even funny. Ohoh, I see what you did there! Playing as Old Batman should be cool… It would be MGS4 all over again. I tried Saints Row 2, but it felt too… arcade-y to me, but I’m interested in seeing what Del Toro is up to! Japanese games would be a pretty cool addition to the VGAs.

Next thing you know, TR has a cover system. And MP. And a male protagonist =O

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Nooooo!!! …But Uncharted is more or less what you described. Tomb Raider with more explosions and less exploration.

I’m sure people are going to compare Uncharted 3 (no doubt exists) to this game if they release around the same time.

  • Dimentionalist

Tomb Raider and Square Enix… two things I’d never thought I’d see together. Still, this reboot sounds intriguing.

    • Apollokids

Crystal Dynamics is a subsidiary of Square Enix

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Aya Brea playable in new Tomb Raider, confirmed. One woman covered in mud, the other… in smut. The perfect combination. EDIT: Kidding, but wouldn’t that be nice… doesn’t this image remind anyone else of the battle weary Aya Brea CGs for 3rd B-day?

  • stealthgiga

Oh no…! Everyone is rebooting! >.<

    • xxx128

Yeah, they want money too. lol

    • I know! Isn’t is awesome?!

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

This will be the 3rd time Tomb Raider “rebooted” under Crystal Dynamics. Legend and Anniversary were definitely reboots in a sense, and if Guardian of Light counts this will be the 4th.

Rebooting your franchise for every installment might seem frivolous, but it’s the next best thing to having new IP. Developers are no longer tied down by plot/ continuity, can appeal to new audiences, as well as put forth their fresh new innovative ideas without worry.

Many, if not most, JRPG franchises do it all the time.

    • Apollokids

Here are some revealing details about this game. As well as A High-Res (non cropped) version of the new full out Lara.

  • Wait, didn’t she already have an origin story? Or was that just the movie?

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

She kind of sort of maybe had an origin story in Legend. The movie seems non-canon.

  • PrinceHeir

she’s more young now and more aggressive :D

can’t wait to see the gameplay of this game ^^

first Dues Ex now Tomb Raider, with the rumored Hitman 5 being a reboot, all we need is a new Legacy of Kain in the same vien of Nier but more darker.

    • malek86

LOK reboot? Hell no. They need to give us a proper ending first.

  • Nice. I like when people rethink their franchises. It may not be a great game but I’ll be happy if they try something different and fail instead of trying to dress up an old formula.
I really want this to be good.

  • xxx128

Its not funny anymore how vidgames these days are synonymous with “stories”. If you want a story go read a damn book, yup that those things with paper pages in it. Now can we have some bloody gameplay info? Doh.

  • Guest

I hope S-E is handling the CG like in Deus Ex

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

If I’m not mistaken, SE only did the trailers. Everything else in Deus Ex is rendered in-game, so no CGs on that one.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

The people at Visual Works are CG gods, but I’m let down sometimes when the actual game looks neither as breathtaking nor as intense as in the CG trailers.

      • Guest

Well thats whats cool about Rockstar’s LA Noire I guess. Everything in the trailer was done in game.

  • neo_firenze

Wasn’t Tomb Raider Legend already a franchise reboot THIS GENERATION? This “reboot” nonsense is getting ridiculous. Game sounds interesting enough to me, but jeez… enough already, publishers.

    • Lara has just lost her way. Reboots are great way to try new things with series and to build a fanbase and introduce it to people who have never experienced it before. I never knew people dont like reboots.

  • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

If the whole game looks as good as that cover art, I’d buy it just for the gorgeousness

  • glemtvapen

Well, at least Lara looks smoking now. Never saw why people appealed of the blow-up doll look she had on the past.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Because low-poly rendering limitations of the mid-’90s made characters unattractive and blocky, the devs exaggerated Laura’s distinguishing features so she’d be more memorable. But her face and figure became iconic so they stuck with it. I’m glad she looks more human now.

  • BOYLANmonk

She’s ugly and she looks like a man.

    • I have to Vehemently disagree! She looks edgy and like shes been out there trying to survive!

    • I’m more than fine with hardened explorers not looking like models, but I just don’t like the look of this face much either.

  • All they need to do is fix the combat and the freaking CAMERA FOR ONCE!!!

  • Lara looks good on this one. Hope to see more.

  • shy_mel

That render is beautiful and that’s hyping me up already. The scratches and blood show that this entry in the franchise is not using those ragdoll physics. Looks like Crystal was able to use Square Enix’s two most important tools (money and time) and I’m happy about that.

  • joesz

Lol,I think Lara Croft has just been asianfied, homes.

  • Couldnt they at least change the freaking name?! They just keep reforming freaking Lara Croft, they could just do somebody else following her footsteps 10 years later or a daughter OR ANYTHING

    • Testsubject909

      Brand Name. Iconic Character. Sex.

They don’t want to mess with their easy access to nostalgia and teenage wallets.

  • Testsubject909

Here’s an idea. Don’t make her into an unlikeable selfish destructive bitch. Maybe that’ll help make her into an actually interesting character, instead of a superficial disgusting poor excuse for a protagonist.

Also, I’ll feel free to add, who the hell plays Tomb Raider for the story? I played Tomb Raider, I played all the recent Tomb Raiders, and you know what? The story sucks. It’s cliche, it’s hollywood, it actually succeeded at pissing me off a few times because of Lara’s selfish actions or her blatant stupidity. The gameplay is solid though, and the camera workable if you’re skilled enough/aware enough of your surroundings, but it also dawns on me that when they incorporated the narrative into the gameplay, Lara’s portrayed as even further of a psychopath as well as a destructive being who has absolutely no respect for history. A so called historian and architect who destroys ancient remains only to gain the prize at the end to do what? To put it up in her own mansion and keep it as far away from a museum as possible.

She even deals with the black market, the hell is wrong with people liking this woman? She’s just a pair of tits on legs, and even then, I’ve seen better on dozens of games. By today’s standards, she’s just okay hot, not even a leading exemplar of hotness.

And now you want to make a character centric tale? On a bitch? On a selfish depraved woman who, true enough has a tragic past, can’t get over her mommy issues and puts the world at risk for absolutely no reason other then to reunite with her mommy in what is obviously an underworld filled with creatures that she already had hintings of their existance… what… DOZENS of years after her mother mysteriously disappeared, providing that common sense states that SHE’S DEAD, AND IF NOT, THEN SHE’S A SPIRIT OR A ZOMBIE.

Even the latest game that’s titled Lara Croft and the blah blah blah, Gameplay is great, but story? I have the odd sensation she went in to get that artifact which she had the intent of taking, KNOWING that the stories of it stated that it would unleash a great evil. I highly doubt she actually went searching at gunpoint, considering all the acrobatics she needs to go through to find a treasure. And even if she did. Her death versus the release of a great evil, something she’d certainly not be unfamiliar with, what with having an unnatural devilish entity as an arch-rival, would certainly understand that LEADING THEM ASTRAY AND KILLING THEM AS SHE NORMALLY WOULD DO, would certainly be better then leading them to this relic of great terror.

GAH! Seriously, her character’s done nothing but get worse and worse. You know how to make Lara Croft better? Get her back to her old flirtatious self from her PC days, remove that hollywood wannabe bull that’s making a vain attempt at portraying her as a tragic heroine which clashes entirely with her action and devil may care attitude which is a poor excuse for “Complexity of Character”, and focus on the gameplay rather then on selling her based on sex. The original game sold for two reasons. It was a good 3D game at the time, and it had a sexy protagonist. The latter was less important then the first.

And on a more related note:

So… Lara Croft is going to be in Japan huh?

What’re the odds she meets a kraken/multi-tentacle like creature and gets in a sticky situation?

    I’d say pretty high.

    • holy crap.

      • Testsubject909

        What about divine excrements?

    • Games should rival that of Hollywood level production and experience, I do not see any that you say that would sway me from even playing any of those games, in fact, you have persuaded me even more that it is an epic series. Now Im excite for more Tomb Raider!

      • Testsubject909

Yeah, I myself was deeply disappointed by the Kraken in Underworld.

Maybe Japan will make better use of tentacles.

  • ThunderGod_Cid

Wow….she actually looks human(and hot) this time around.
    Well done Square-Enix, well done.

  • ThunderGod_Cid

Now that SE fixed how she looks, maybe now they can finally fix the in-game physics engine (which has been the same since TR1).

Nothing takes out of the game like unloading two clips into a guards chest, and they keep run at you like you’re shooting rubberbands at them.

Or how firing a assualt rifle into the face of a tiger doesn’t even cause it to flinch or stop moving.

Or my favorite: falling from any ledge higher than 5 feet is instant death, but JUMPING from 10 feet is fine.

  • At lest she is finally good looking for the very first time.

  • skymap

There’s definitely a Japanese aesthetic here.

  • Darkrise

Lara Croft + SE= another Lightning cameo like 3rd Birthday?

  • tubers

Wow. I guess I wasn’t that crazy when I saw that Lara in games isn’t really that hot. Well, sure didn’t have a pretty face IMO. I guess I wanted “regular size” *wink*

Haven’t really played any Lara games. I’ll play this one just for the lulz.

  • I haven’t been this excited about a game’s announcement since the announcement of CoD: Black Ops.

    • Dude neither have I!!! CoD: Black Ops was simply the most definitive first person shooter we’ve had this year, it is simply awesome, and Tomb Raider is an awesome announcement too. This generation has actually be a phenomenal one for FPS! Ive have had the great pleasure of playing Modern Warfare 2 which was outstanding for last year and now Black Ops was simply stunning! Reminds me of how on tumblr I was telling people that this has been the glory age of FPS!Likening Tomb Raider to such a phenomenal game is just, well it psyches me up extremely. Ive not been this excited since Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja: Storm 2 was announced too! So can not wait for Lara Croft!

      • Errr, yeah, if you say so…

  • Haven’t enjoyed a Tomb Raider game since I played the original on the Saturn. Played the sequel on the PS1 and hated it. Felt the same way about the other one or two I played on PS2. Still, if the game actually looks like that, it’s nice to see they’re getting away from the odd cartoon character she looked like in the last HD one.
