Monster Hunter Portable 3rd Sees Monstrous Sales

By Ishaan . December 7, 2010 . 8:29am

Just yesterday, Capcom reported that they had shipped 2 million copies of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd in the game’s first week of release, which is the highest shipment for any game in the series so far.

Today, we have more concrete sales numbers, courtesy of Famitsu. If Famitsu’s figures are accurate, Portable 3rd outsold its initial shipment in less than a whole week. The game now stands at 2,146,467 copies sold in a period of five days (Dec. 1st – 5th).

Portable 3rd’s release gave a significant boost to PSP sales in Japan, too. A total of 326,639 PSPs were sold during the week, setting a new weekly sales record for the system.

While no breakdown of models was provided, there’s no doubt the special edition Monster Hunter Portable 3rd PSP with a higher capacity battery and improved analog nub design was in part responsible.

Media-Create sales figures — which are what we usually refer to — for Portable 3rd and other recent game releases should be available tomorrow as per usual, so check back for how many monster hunters Zinogre devoured in an entire week.

I really want to try the new PSP! But unfortunately, I know there’s basically no chance of ever seeing it here.

Oh well, Capcom, at least hurry up with the localization, kthx.

    • glemtvapen

      Import it.

I know I will, once I scrounge up enough money of course. $400 is expensive but this PSP is just too damn stylish and better.

  • Apollokids

The new giant, goliath, behemoth, monster, colossus, titan on the block.

  • karasuKumo

I am so pumped for this game! I really want that PSP too. (I still want the Crisis Core PSP 2000 XD)

So many good PSP titles coming out this year and 2011! I’ve got to get the Disgaea titles on the PSP, The Third Birthday, Dissidia Duodecim, this game and finally BRS. I’m going to be so broke :(

  • holyPaladin

    New PSP sounds good!
    Is it still called PSP-3000?

    And MHP3rd localization soon please

    • lostinblue

      yeah, it’s called PSP-3000 MHB ;)

  • Why does Capcom not try to for simultaneous worldwide launch of the game, it would only increase sales numbers even more for them, a no lose situation!

The hype around this game would surely cause be to buy it on day 1

    • Code

Simultaneous release globally doesn’t really impact sales, sure they’d be getting more sales from releasing it in more regions, but there’s likely not much of a correlation between releasing a game on the same day in Japan and the US and increased sales.

      Although I do agree with the notion of simultaneous global releases, but for many games sadly it just won’t happen omo;

Now those are some VERY impressive figures. While the PSP will never catch up to the DS, it’s still nice that it has a chance to shine. Plus, another worthy addition to the PSP library can only be a good thing.

  • Exkaiser

Oh damn, selling double what Tri did overall in only a week? Hardcore.

  • thebanditking

I know PSP is not a big contender the world over but this is exactly why this system is a total success, just perhaps not in the way it should be. Its a fantastic system with a ton of games (I have 45 my self). As for MH in general this is a fantastic performance (I am sure Capcom is going nuts) and while I am not surprised its impressive to realize how easily this passed the Wii numbers, especially given the small difference in price points.

congrats Capcom now make a Monster Hunter game for the PS3 with Lost Planet 2 engine. or make a New Onimusha game thank you.

    • BlackRockShooter

Monster Hunter Using Lost Planet 2 Engine? No thanks.

      • PrinceHeir

what’s wrong with LP2 Engine? it’s actually looks good but since Monster Hunter uses vibrant color it should look pretty not to mention Monster Hunter is not really a graphical game. ^^

the only downside about the MT Framework 2.0 is the physics.

  • Smart business on Sony’s part to redesign the PSP for this game. The same way Capcom got Nintendo to create the CCplus. Still doubt this game comes over here. With the hack already being out, and Western gamers eating it up. It clear to see that Japan is a handheld country now. It’s almost point to make games for any home console. Nothing expect Mario can ever come close to these sales.

How large is this “enhanced battery”?? I’ve got a 2000 model but have a 2800mAh battery in it… soz it’s better than stock (1800mAh came with 1000, 1200mAh /w 2000/3000). Just curious whats in this model.

    • ChaosPaladinFayt

it has umm… over 9000mAh battery, thats how enhanced it is.

jokes aside, google is ur friend bro.

      • hush404

Yep, tried google, many pages saying it is “Enhanced” but no word on actual numbers :P lol for 2 secs I went “Woah, 9000?” :P

        • ChaosPaladinFayt
