Capcom May Yet Develop Another Fighter For Wii

By Ishaan . December 11, 2010 . 7:34pm

Don’t get your hopes too high just yet, but at the same time, don’t lose hope either. If you’re wishing for another fighter on the Wii, Capcom may yet develop something to satisfy that craving.

Over at the Capcom-Unity boards, Capcom’s Christian Svensson has been answering another round of fighting game fan queries, some of which were specifically to do with the Wii, like this one:

You said there’s, "maybe something else somewhere," in regards to another fighting game project. Ryota Niitsuma said "it would be a waste to develop only one Wii fighter for the TvC stick," and you added that there are an undisclosed number of Wii projects in development, is it possible there’s another fighting game project on the Wii coming from Capcom or 8ing?

Svensson: Not a chance that I’m commenting on this the way you’re asking. :-X

I will say, we have recently released several virtual console arcade titles for Wii. We’ll see what else the future holds later.

Let’s run that through the translator for a second. Translation: “No comment, because whatever I say is going to get twisted and contorted by people to suit their own theories. That said, let’s wait and see.”

Fans will want to note that 8ing is the company that developed Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and Castlevania Judgment, as well as Fate: Unlimited Codes on the PSP. In reply to a later question asking for a Street Fighter game on the Wii, Svensson also said that these requests had been duly noted (once again, no confirmation).

please just port also Third Strike, Alpha Series.

as for a new game. maybe a new VS game? Tatusnoko vs Capcom 2? :)

    • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

If it were to be Tatsunoko VS Capcom 2, I better see the subtitle, “Return of Super Heroes” being used, for worldwide marketing, just like how “Clash of Super Heroes” was used for the original #MvC #MarvelVSCapcom

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

If it has to be anything, let it be Tatsunoko vs. Capcom 2, since that’s now a Wii franchise. Let anything major stay on the HD systems.

    • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

Don’t worry Third Strike was announced for PSN & XBLA :D

You can parry to your heart’s content now

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

The site wasnt working for me for like the past 8 hours or so…

Anyway, TvC was fun but I was hoping it would go to the powerful consoles. Though I wouldnt mind seeing another fighter on Wii, it needs more third party support.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/jodecideion?feature=mhum TheWon and Only

Right because the most powerful systems need all the fighters they can get! With the market on the HD system getting close to over saturation. A new fighter for the Wii which seems to get 1 game a year. Could be a great business move if it’s the right game.

      • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Over saturation, a great business move? It seems that gamers on PS3s and 360′s buy more games on average than Wii owners, similarly, third party multiplatform games sell better on the powerful consoles than they do on the Wii.

Therefore, both signs indicate that there is more of a fanbase interested in these games on the powerful consoles.

Plus Naruto Shippuden Clash of Ninja Revolution 3 already proved that it was the best fighter available on the Wii and that no other fighting game on the Wii could ever come close to it, so Capcom should just stay away and focus on the powerful consoles.

        • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I actually think it was kind of weird of them not to put a mainstream, time-tested franchise like Street Fighter on the Wii alongside the other platforms. I was very surprised to see Tatsunoko vs. Capcom instead as their game of choice, considering no one outside of Japan knows what the hell Tatsunoko is.

Oh, and you really need to stop with the ridiculous hyping/baiting. I’ve put up with you and the rest of the “everything needs to be HD” brigade long enough.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

I don’t see what the problem is with wanting things to be done of the highest quality, though. I mean, do you think that if the Wii had been a HD system on par with the PS3 and 360, that anyone would mind if, say, Super Street Fighter IV was ported onto it? No, of course not. None of us complained back in the PS2/Gamecube/X-box days when Soul Calibur 2 was on three systems, because the three systems were pretty even with each having their own strengths.

But if Capcom are going to make a new fighting game or another entry in the SF series, they should make it the best they can. Gameplay-wise AND graphic-wise. It’s not Capcom’s fault (and believe me, I don’t start many sentences with that) that Nintendo opted for gimmicky motion control rather than graphic and processing power (and keep in mind, I’ve said that I feel motion control is ALSO a gimmick on the PS3 and 360, even though I do think it does have a place. It should just never replace regular controls).

I guess it was nice of them to throw Wii owners a bone with TvC, but, honestly, that should’ve been a PS3/360 game too, as that’s where the majority of fighting game fans are, on the HD systems.

My biggest problem with the Wii getting things too, is that a company like Capcom will program towards the lowest common denominator when they do a multi-platform release. Do you have any doubt that Sengoku Basara would’ve looked a lot better if it had been only a PS3 game and not a Wii/PS3 game? To take full advantage of the PS3 would’ve made the Wii version look awful, much like when they made the Wii version of the original Dead Rising, which didn’t compare to the 360 one. I don’t want a game being gimped because the Wii has to have it too and I don’t want the majority of fighting fans to miss out, just because Nintendo has to have a table scrap thrown at them.

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

No, but it’s annoying when you show up in every portable games thread asking why it isn’t on PS3. :p

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

I don’t do it in EVERY portable game thread.

Just Valkyria Chronicles and the Persona remakes, basically. lol

I have never asked for a PS3 Agito nor Birth by Sleep. Hell, I’m a fan of the God of War series and I never complained about Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta not being HD.

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

You’ve done it in Resident Evil threads, Mega Man threads etc. You were also ridiculously arguing against any shred of common sense that somehow a Monster Hunter on PS3 would magically raise awareness of the brand in Japan.

Look, it’s not that I have an issue with people disliking portables for whatever reason. That’s fine. It’s just really annoying when the same five guys show up in the majority of portable games threads and keep asking why so-and-so game isn’t portable. I mean, not everything has to be on PS3 or high-def or whatever, you know.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

Well, the reason why I did in the Resident Evil and Mega Man Legends thread is that the 3DS is a lot more powerful than the current portable systems and thus, is perfect for porting those titles over. If neither are ported, then, hey, doesn’t bother me. Wouldn’t be the first RE title I didn’t play (still never played RE0 or the remake of the first) and I actually never played the MML franchise, so if I don’t get a chance to play it, won’t effect me any. BUT it’d be nice to give a try, so why not port it? If the graphics are more advanced, might as well share the wealth.

As for Monster Hunter, I will repeat what I said previously. Software sells Hardware. If you really think that a PS3 version of the series wouldn’t sell as well or better as the Wii one, then you’re not thinking straight. The portable systems are ahead in Japan because the majority of titles that the Japanese want are only being presented on the portables. I think the failure of logic is in thinking that creating a brand new title in the series, with graphics that could appeal to a new group of people wouldn’t have any positive impact on the series. People liked to act as though a PS3 version wouldn’t even sell a single copy. The 360 MH title actually sold very well for a Japanese 360 title. That proves to me that no matter what system you put it on, it will sell.

Therefore, why not create a new title in the series specifically geared towards Japan’s top HD system? It’s not like it’s not already a guaranteed million seller. It’d definitely do as well as FFXIII did, if not better. If Capcom don’t want that money, that’s their business. I’ve actually never played any titles in the series myself, as I’ve been told there was no story, and I am never interested in games without story. However, I am very good at marketing and I can see when something sells well. Logic would dictate that you’d raise awareness by creating new versions of the brand you’re trying to sell. If you know a potential audience is out there, why not cater towards them?

I’m not even in that potential audience, but that doesn’t mean that there wouldn’t be at least a million or so Japanese gamers who are.

          • PrinceHeir

TBH i would rather have new installments rather than portable ports.

Valkyria Chronicles 4, Parasite Eve 4, Monster Hunter 4 would be a welcome edition for the PS3 :)

          • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

I had a lot of fun Chop Till You Drop. I haven’t tried the 360 version, but I’m not sure not how much more fun it would have been anyway. DR2 is busting my chops, though…

“I don’t see what the problem is with wanting things to be done of the highest quality, though.”
Quality might mean different things for different people (maybe even different for each type of game). It’s where you place it. Personally, it will always have to land on the gameplay. It just has to land on that square and if done right that’s enough to win me over ten fold. Or maybe just the story or characters. Even in this “HD age” I appreciate games like Deadly Premonition and the like for sticking around, providing a certain quality that can’t be measured in numbers.

Anyway, that’s getting off topic. I agree with your other points (I think), but maybe next generation things will be more leveled.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

@Matty – well, besides the graphical differences, which you could probably find on the 500 fanboy flamebait websites out there that like to compare between systems, the most important thing is that they lowered the number of zombies present in the Wii version. Areas that previous had hundreds now have a few dozen.

And, of course, gameplay should always be the first concern. I would never put anything ahead of gameplay. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have had the problems I had with the Prince of Persia reboot, Enslaved, and the Legacy of Kain series.

But, if you can pretty much make a good, fun game, regardless of what system it is on, why not go all the way and make it as graphically pleasing as possible? And if something like AI or number of enemies is effected as well, that should factor in.

Sure, you can paint a picture with only three colors, but why not go for a larger palette?

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DUJLS64X6LF4GNFZ2NYUNJFVR4 Charlton

            @ Charles Lupula

I have once read the reason being for Capcom not releasing Monster Hunter for PS3 is not neccessarily for a thought of low sales, but the suspected ability to make a profit. I have read that you calim to be knowledgable about marketing. While what you have not taking into account, which is the essence of marketing, is the profit margin. Producing a AAA game for PS3/X360 can exceed a comparable Wii game by atleast three times. With that in mind, to maintain a comparable or greater profit margin on the HD consoles, the game must sell atleast 2x-3x more units than the same game would on Will.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

Yeah, Capcom said that back when the PS3 was not a profitable system, back when the Wii Monster Hunter was actually the PS3 Monster Hunter. That was early in the system’s history, when it wasn’t selling. That’s also around the same time they made DMC4 multi-platform. Things have changed since.

Hell, MGS4 and Tales of Vesperia PS3 hadn’t even been released at the time of that quote.

          • neo_firenze

I think TvC on Wii was really more due to Capcom’s arcade division looking for a cost effective hardware solution for their “second tier” fighter during the return to the genre in 2008. Street Fighter IV released in arcades around the same time on the Taito Type X2 hardware, but Capcom likely didn’t have the budget to be able to afford to produce a second Type X2 game at the same time.

That and TvC would be a guaranteed simple port to Wii for the Japanese audience who were Wii-crazy. A western TvC localization was never a given (and honestly was a little surprising to some considering the Tatsunoko cast is widely recognized in Japan but not elsewhere), so it makes sense for Capcom to not worry too much about the 360 in Japan, or the PS3 which was still struggling to gain a foothold in the market at the time. SF4 was a different animal – since it’s such a big brand it got more development funds, and a more worldwide focus for future console ports.

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Yea, but TvC didn’t do so hot in Japan either. It’s still not as mainstream a game as a mainline flagship Capcom fighter, which was my point. Capcom of all people should’ve learnt that high-profile stuff tends to do better with the Wii audience based on brand (Resident Evil) as opposed to what a lot of people view to be their second-tier or lesser-known titles (Spyborgs etc etc).

My point wasn’t about hardware — merely about brand-recognition and market opportunities. :)

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

High profile stuff does better with the Wii crowd than low-profile does with the Wii crowd.

But high profile stuff on the Wii doesn’t do as well as high-profile stuff on the HD systems. Hell, I’d consider Dead Space: Extraction a fairly high profile Wii title and look how that did. There are low-profile PS3/360 titles that sold better.

I honestly don’t think SFIV would’ve sold anywhere near as much as it did if it had been a Wii exclusive. It would’ve sold well for a Wii title, but you wouldn’t get the numbers that the PS3 and 360 did for it. You would’ve had slightly better than TvC numbers, but I doubt they would’ve reached a million copies.

          • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Hyping? I only give things the TRUE recognition they deserve, ll.

It was just odd for a third party game that didnt take advantage of anything on the Nintendo hardware to remain as an exclusive. One can say it had motion controls but it supported all controller inputs for the Wii, though werent there murmurings that it was being looked into to coming to the powerful consoles?

          • https://twitter.com/#!/Ojsinnerz Firo_Prochainezo

Oh dear lord. You hype EVERYTHING possible, and you admit it yourself that you buy things if they have ANY hype around them.

You buy everything mainstream, you are EXACTLY what’s wrong with this entire goddamn industry. GRAPHICS GRAPHICS GRAPHICS. WHERE’S THE GRAPHICS AND GENERIC SOUNDING MUSIC? GAMEPLAY? WHO NEEDS THOSE. I JUST NEED MY WALK IN THE PARK VIDEO GAMES ON THE EASIEST DIFFICULTY POSSIBLE. I BUY WHATEVER MY FAVORITE GAME REVIEWING WEBSITE, IGN, TELLS ME AND NEVER FORM AN OPINION OF MY OWN. IF PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT IT, IT MUST AUTOMATICALLY BE GOOD. MARIO GAMES NEED A BETTER STORYLINE, DESPITE THAT I WATCH ALL THESE GENERIC SHOUNEN ANIME FOR STORY AND ACTION. I THINK A GENERIC SHOUNEN ANIME REVOLVING AROUND FANSERVICE IS THE GREATEST THING EVER XD RANDUM ROFL. OH THIS GAME IS TOOOOO HAAAAAAARD EVEN THOUGH THE DIFFICULTY IS ACTUALLY MODERATE. I’M JUST GOING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT IT INSTEAD OF TRYING TO GET AROUND IT. I’M SO PATHETIC THAT I HAVE TO PLAY EVERYTHING ON THE EASIEST DIFFICULTY POSSIBLE, AND STILL HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE GAMES. WHEN I’M ACCUSED BY OTHER PEOPLE FOR DOING SOMETHING, I RELY ON MY 4 YEAR OLD LOGIC AND 5 YEAR OLD INTELLIGENCE TO COME UP WITH THE WORST CONCLUSIONS EVER.

You need to get your head checked out. You lack almost every piece of common sense, you can’t even detect extremely sarcastic jokes, you deny doing something even after you do it for a long period of time (Like the time you said GOOD GAMES BEGET GOOD SALES. You did that a long time, don’t you DARE say you’ve only done it temporarily) and you even go around ignoring comments, then complain about the same thing later. It’s like we’re babysitting a 5 year old here.

How the hell did you find this website? And congratulations for ruining Siliconera. You deserve an award.

          • neo_firenze

Also, I don’t think it’s fair to categorize Tsunayoshi’s comment as saying “everything needs to be HD”. That’s not really what he’s saying at all. I think he’s absolutely right in noting that sales for these kinds of more “hardcore gamer” genres or from third party developers DO sell better on 360 and PS3 than they do on Wii. If I was Capcom, I’d ignore Wii for the future too and focus on the consoles where these kinds of games seem to have proven to be better able to generate sales. It doesn’t really have anything to do with HD being inherently better or worse, but it’s not fair to ignore trends for non-Nintendo non-”casual” games’ performance on the Wii.

I’ll ignore the Naruto comment, but other than that sentence I don’t really disagree with a thing Tsunayoshi is saying.

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

I made that statement based on his comment history, actually.

Tatsu vs. Cap showed that a fighter can find a home on the Wii. The online was solid & it was alot of fun. I was glad to purchase it I wonder what game they would consider though.

That’s actually plausiable. What could happen is that CvS3 would be “tested” on the Wii and if it’s does successful numbers, it would be ported or (preferably) enchanced on the Xbox 360 and/or PlayStation 3.

I’d prefer something like another Final Fight. It would work well with any input method, would be in line with the whole “invite your friends” mentality that seems popular on the console, and finaly that part of the genre is in dire need of some support.
