Eternal Legacy Is Gameloft’s Take On A JRPG

By Ishaan . December 16, 2010 . 11:36am

A western JRPG? That’s what Gameloft have produced with Eternal Legacy, a sci-fi-meets-fantasy RPG for the iPhone and iPad. Eternal Legacy uses a three-man turn-based battle system.

Gameloft are rather proud of their achievement with the game, which they say features everything you’d expect to see in a regular RPG — exploration, puzzles, character interaction, sub-quests, voice-acting, customizable characters and weapons.

Random encounter haters will also want to note that you can see enemies and choose to avoid them. Eternal Legacy costs $6.99 on the iTunes App Store. PAL folk can grab it for £3.99 on the European store.

      It’ll come to DSiWare/Android/PSP sometime in the future. Just look at Zenonia!

      Same here. I need to replace my 5+ yr old iPod classic, but I’d rather wait and save for a 3DS instead.

    Mmm looks good. Characters walk kinda funny tho.

  • NoElixirs

    Rip or not, the effort put forth is admirable.

  • malek86

    This reminds me of Anachronox, pretty much the only good game to come out of Ion Storm Dallas.

  • JustaGenericUser

    Hmm, not bad I suppose. I expect a PSP or PSN port, though, I don’t have an iPhone…

    Also, in before JRPG haters all of a sudden like this game because it’s made in the west and not Japan, even though it has the same style as Japan made RPGs.

    • Ereek

      I’m not entirely fond of the whole JRPG/WRPG bit, but if I’m going to classify JRPG and WRPG, it wouldn’t be simply “made in the west” and “made in Japan.” I’d classify them more based on their style and mechanics.

      Black Sigil is a JRPG made by western developers.
      Demon’s Souls is a WRPG made by eastern developers.
      And this seems to be a JRPG made by western developers.

      That’s the problem with these sub genres: not everyone uses the same definitions. Just the other day I saw some people saying Ys and Kingdom Hearts weren’t ARPGs. To me this is mind boggling.

      • Code

        Those would be the definitions I’d be using too as far as JRPG, WRPG — it’s more about gameplay/style then just where it’s produced although I’m still guilty of doubling up the terms WRPG/JRPG too when used to refer to where an RPG is produced on occasion opo;

        Honestly, this looks more like WOW than a JRPG. The closest thing to a JRPG it has going for it is an FF7-like style and even then it does a horrible job of even matching the aesthetic.

        • Code

          I’m not really seeing anything remotely FF7 in this, although I’m not seeing much in this period, looks terribly messy, poor art direction, and just very pseudo to me x_x’ Gameloft like Val Vieira said below just kind of rips off other games, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they lacked substance and creativity when it comes to there own creations x_x’

            The battle menu looks like FF7. It even has ff7-styled limit breaks. Have you even played FF7?

          • Code

            I think your giving a whole lot of credit to that character design if you think that looks like Cloud, maybe Cloud if they washed out his spikes, and hit him in the face with a hammer a few times opo; I guess the little blue pegs on the side denote “limit break”? I didn’t really notice them, although it’s hardly something just FF7 uses. Sorry I don’t agree with your opinion, but save your little jabs, anyone who kicks around here knows I’ve played a whole lot of FF7 in my life >w<;

  • Yui

    Anyone who might have played the game so far, I’ve got a couple of questions that I’d love it if you answered:
    1) Thoughts, criticisms, etc? Is it worth the cash, even though it’s an iDevice game?
    2) How long does it last? I don’t want to pay four whole pounds an RPG that’ll give me less than 4 hours playtime. 10-15 would be preferable, but I’m not picky. ;P
    3) Anything else you might feel it’s important to point out to prospective buyers?

    Gameloft is horrendously notorious lately for making blatant clones of popular games and game styles and releasing them on the iPad or iPhone. It’s not a bad thing if you’re looking to play a game like Starcraft (called ever-so-subtly “StarFront”) on your iPad/iPhone since Blizzard is more than likely never going to release Starcraft (and SCII) on those platforms. Don’t expect anything amazing from any of their games, though. They’re all pretty bland and tasteless, and it can get annoying just looking them when they’re obvious rip-offs of more popular games.

    It looks like the love child of Final Fantasy 7 and WOW. If/when I get an IPad I will buy a copy though.

  • puchinri

    Some of the settings and battle screen look nice. If they did a more original project for a home console, I think I’d be interested (probably).

    I would say the 3ds could easily do this and maybe quite rough around the edges.
