A Closer Look At Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection

By Spencer . December 17, 2010 . 6:36pm

imageYes, there is another remake of Final Fantasy IV, but this is different from the Nintendo DS remake Square Enix released just two years ago. Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection packs Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, a direct sequel starring Cecil’s son Ceodore, on to one UMD with high resolution graphics.

Here’s how the PSP version stacks up against the original game.

Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection also has a brand new scenario that connects the two games and a gallery mode. Square Enix has Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection slated for a spring release in Japan.

  • yes yes better graphics who cares

    now twewy 2 please

  • WonderSteve

We really should get more 2D games like this and Lunar SSH.

  • Wow, you can actually see Rydia’s boobs now!

    • We can? -checks again- Wohoo, buying this!

    • BOUGHT!

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

      Closer Look indeed.

    • Testsubject909

      …Huh… Well what d’you know.

Odd, coming from someone with Bubble as an avatar, but hey. I won’t complain from such news.

      • It’s Funny, I actually Changed my Avatar, but it’s taking forevs to change it here.

  • I’ll need a better look at the new map sprites, but nostalgia may hold me back a bit when playing this.

If they ever do this to FFVI I’d dread the graphical overhaul even more- that, to me, is a game that approaches perfection.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

FFVI and Chrono Trigger are for me two sides of the same gold coin.

      • I always felt as though Chrono Trigger was the missing link between FF6 and FF7, too.

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

That’s an interesting but not unreasonable viewpoint.

  • Tom_Phoenix

Personally, I would prefer some comparison shots between the DS remake and this one. That way, it would make it easier for me to decide which one to get.

    • DS is 3d, PSP is 2d. Make a choice.

      • Moriken

Not to forget that the difficulty curve in the DS version is different than the original (as in, slightly harder for the most part)…I actually found it a little bit more enjoyable; but the new scene that shows Golbez’ backstory was utter garbage.

      • Tom_Phoenix

I am aware of that. I would STILL like to see some comparison shots.

  • doomspeller10

Wow I wasn’t really convinced about this game, you know, another remake in 2D felt like meh… but it actually looks superior to all the other 2D remakes. On top of that, there’s the sequel that comes included. Just add some jiggling to Rydia and I’m sold XD
    *Waits for English announcement*

    • Hraesvelgr

Why do you want Rydia to juggle?

      • doomspeller10

sorry that was a typo… I meant jiggling LOL

    • Square-enix’s NA branchs facebook posted the silicon era article about this game; id say thats pretty darn close to announcement

  • Feynman

SE Exectuive A: “Crap, FFXIV totally bombed! This is going to be a big financial mess.”

SE Executive B: “Well then, there’s only one thing to do!”

SE Executive A: “Cut our losses, try to salvage what we can, and focus on making better games in the future?”

SE Executive B: “Nope! It’s time to start milking the hell out of our old titles again!”

    • Moriken

So next time a new release bombs, they’ll lay hand on FFV?

      • I… kinda want this to happen.

        • Testsubject909

Let’s keep making Squeenix bomb until they meet our demands of a 3D Final Fantasy 6!

          • malek86

Now I’m not sure about this, but I thought the reason why they haven’t followed through with the plan, was that FF4 DS didn’t meet sales expectations?

    • Tom_Phoenix

To be honest, I’d rather have them milk old titles than continue releasing crappy games, considering that even ports/remakes of their older titles seem to be superior.

Of course, I would like it EVEN MORE if they started releasing completely new, quality titles, but that is another matter…

  • A new scenario? Improved graphics for both games?

… god DAMN it, Square. Don’t encourage me to buy this game again. And don’t give me valid reasons to do so.

    • Please tell me this is the first time you’re buying the remake unlike certain people around these parts that I shall not name…

      • HA. HA HA. HA HA HA. You are a funny man, Ishaan. A very funny man indeed.

*Goes off to play FFIV DS again, loving it and weeping simultaneously*

      • Testsubject909

Me, it’ll be my first time buying the remake.

I skipped on various other remakes, including their latest 3D iteration on the DS. (I just don’t like that poor man’s 3D graphic, that and I tried another one of their 3D FF on the DS. I didn’t like the battles, they felt overly slow and the victory animation were unskippable…

But just a slightly beefier 2D graphic for FF4 seems nice enough, plus I’d be getting it for the sequel/epilogue with Ceodore, personally. (Don’t own a Wii… yet)

  • so awesome!!

  • You had me at UMD.

  • PrinceHeir

all we need is FFV and FFVI maybe release it as PSP2 launch title?

i was planning to buy all the FF from the PSX era, guess i don’t need those origins, anthology, and such.

damn it PSN is getting tons nostalgia now :)

  • Tokyo Guy

As opposed as I am to Square’s often-pathetic business tactics, this project has my seal of approval. I for one, am happy to see a 2D remake of this game, as opposed to the hideous mess that graced the DS. And you get The After which many people haven’t even played.

  • Oh cool I still need to play The After Years, time to buy my second favorite FF game AGAIN!

  • thebanditking

There had better be a NA/EU announcement coming in the next few weeks, that’s all I’m saying……

  • karasuKumo

What I don’t get is that they know if they released a VII remake for the PSP, 3DS or even DS it would get amazing sales. Are they not doing it to avoid showing desperation?

Anyway this looks good, I shall be buying in the future :) I never played the original or the DS remake. I’d rather see sequels to forgotten titles instead though (The World Ends With You 2 etc).

  • RupanIII

I’d probably pick this up for After Years, assuming it’s localized. The graphical update looks pretty neat too, actually. I’d rather spruced up 2D that retains the feel of the original than just throwing it all out and re-doing it in 3D.

  • Okay I like the new 2D graphical update and prefer it to the Nintendo DS’ version with the 3D chibi-esque graphics.

Now Square Enix, If I promise to stick with and complete Final Fantasy IV this time round, you’ll start to focus on Final Fantasy V and VI? Deal?

  • xxx128

    Looks great, love it!

  • EvilAkito

God damn it, am I going to buy Final Fantasy IV yet again?

I’ve grown so bored with that game (from playing it so many times) that I haven’t even finished the DS version, yet I just can’t seem to escape it. It was one of my first RPGs and as a result, I have a permanent soft-spot for it.

The DS version was pretty cool, but I’m a sucker for 2D graphics, so this looks like a more appealing remake.

  • Looking forward to this, this is the kind of rerelease I can get behind. Hope we hear about on this side of the ocean sometime soon. Given FF4 and The After have already been translated, I can’t imagine this taking much longer unless their scripts have been changed a lot.
