Rurouni Kenshin: Saisen Gets Its First Trailer

By Ishaan . December 21, 2010 . 8:31am

Hoping to see a certain character up to the Kyoto arc playable in Rurouni Kenshin: Saisen? Chances are, they’re already in. Namco Bandai released the very first promo video for the game at Jump Festa this past weekend, and it reveals a sizable roster encompassing a lot of major heroes and villains.

The trailer also confirms a new animated opening for the game, and…wait a second, what’s that clip of Enishi doing there? The trailer appears to focus primarily on the Kyoto arc, but perhaps there’s more than Namco are letting on?

Rurouni Kenshin: Saisen is slated for a March 10th, 2011 release on the PSP in Japan.

  • Wow that was a pretty interesting trailer, at least now Im interested in the series Dude who was the dude with the red headband, seemed pretty awesome!

Fantastic animation style and great for a 15th anniversary game I guess (its been 15 years? man these series are going up in years !!!)

    • gatotsu911

Maybe you could just watch/read the series and answer that question for yourself. You can’t call yourself a shonen fan if you don’t.

  • Ahhh, been a while since i heard that song, sanosuke pwnzzz. Darn namco bandai is really going into anime bizz more than before >_> it must be really lucrative, they are also releasing this visual novel for psp of the anime ore no imouto konna kawaiiwakenai or something around that.

Actually…I hope they do one of the world only god knows *_*

    • I thought, before the merger, Bandai did just as much anime games as they do now.

      • Well, maybe they stayed a little quiet for a while? Lately i just see so many namco bandai anime games and i feel is a lot more than before o-o, maybe just my imagination

        • gatotsu911

Um… Bandai has always done anime-licensed games. Always. And they’ve most often sucked.

          • Well, most of them were mediocre at best, but some of the are quite good :3

          • goronyan

you can exclude the gundam titles

          • Um… I know they have always done them, but lately, they are doing a lot more, that is what ive been trying to say since my first comment…

    • goronyan

about orenoimouto, althought the game is an spin-off it’s mostly based on the light novel (and the beggining wich is the animation series). From what i’ve read from my friends’s twitter, 2ch and blogs their expectations are high for this game that I’ve already pre-ordered a limited ed. for myself ^^

      • Haha, well, since i saw the game, i reminded me of ToraDora psp game (loved the anime, so i needed the game to get the ending i wanted in toradora >_>), so i was like “Meh, ill check it out”, i finished watching it yesterday (thanks to vacations it took me 2 days just to finish it up) and i pretty much liked it.
Im looking to forward to the psp game, it seems there is an ending for every taste, or so ive heard xD

        • goronyan

you should also read the novel if you can

          • Does the anime follows the novel exactly? or it starts changing at one point? I’ve heard that there will be 2 endings for the anime, the ep 12 was the “good” ending and in the 15 will be other ending, like, scratching ep 12.

          • goronyan

No, even the anime may seems to have the same history as the light novel at some point, it lacks important factors that even the manga has and as you could saw it is mostly focused on kirino’s role. I wish i could say more but then I would be spoilling something involuntarily lol >.>

  • epy

    manly tears… flowing.

So I see they are using past voice clips of Suzuoki Hirotaka for Saitou. It’s nice as I don’t really think someone can fill his shoes but that means the character will be limited in comparison to other characters.

Also Enishi is there! Most likely he will be a secret boss or something. Wonder who will be voicing him.

    • gatotsu911

He had a voice in the second OVA… so probably that guy. Whoever he was.

      • Aiddon

his seiyuu was Nozomu Sasaki who was the voice of Tetsuo in Akira, Johann in Monster, and Yusuke in Yuu Yuu Hakusho

        • Aoshi00

I still miss Sasaki Nozumu’s once cute and youthful voice, his natural speaking voice used to sound like Yusuke/Hasukawa (Here is Greenwood), but I think he hurt his throat before and now his voice is much deeper like Akutsu (Prince of Tennis), like Koutarou in B’tX he did the deep voice on purpose, now his natural voice just sounds like that.. It’s still cool and sounds unique (Seki Toshihiko said his voice was “shibui” :), but I didn’t like him being cast as kid Enishi in Tsuioku-hen, it would’ve worked if his voice was higher like before..

    • I want Enishi.*____*

I drooled when I saw him in the clip
But including the characters up till the Jinchuu arc will pretty much make the roster complete, right?

  • Ooooooo nice, I love the inky SFIV look on the moves.

  • malek86

Looks pretty clunky to me. But then, I’m not exactly informed on fighting games.

  • the game still looks like crap.

  • doomspeller10

I’ll definitely get this game, even if it doesn’t make it to the west.

  • joesz

lol it seems kenshi’s voice has gotten manlier.

The art and the graphics are beautiful,But,the gameplay sucks.

    • Guest

It looks like it has a decent combo system.

      • joesz

they could have done better.we are at the end of 2010.

  • shion16

its like that fighting game sunday vs magazine!!!!

    • Hmm, I’d say it looks better. Combos are nonexistent and the choppiness is ridiculous in Sunday VS. But I can clearly see where you notice similarities. Let’s hope this one’s actually decent

  • This could be so much better if it was in the hands of Arc System Works.

  • gatotsu911

Honestly, as a Kenshin fan, following this game feels roughly equivalent to (if you’ll pardon the rather crass simile) receiving a lap dance from a girl who hates your guts. It’s an excruciating tease. For the love of god, please just let someone greenlight a new anime already!!

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

      Jinchuu, please =(

      ^ Broken Record.

  • Namco and Capcom are keeping the PSP alive by releasing games for it in Japan. Why can’t we get this on the Wii or PS3.

  • Aiddon

The game itself looks to be above average, as is the standard with fighting game adapted from anime. Still, I’m glad to see interest in Kenshin after the anime never getting to the Jinchu arc. So excuse me while I still cling to hope that they’ll finally animate the final arc of the series.

Also, why the HELL is Hiko in there? Wouldn’t he break the game considering the fact that even Watsuki admitted that Hiko is the epitome of a broken character.

    • malek86

As I said in the other post: in fighting games, you could defeat a Goku SSJ3 player with a Saibaiman. So yeah.

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Fanservice to the max. I'm drooling! We even got to see the epilogue to the manga animated! So good. So, character scenarios and Gallery mode… Maybe there will be animated endings for each of the characters?

    Enishi looking good as always!

    • Aoshi00

Yea, the spring picnic from the short at the end of Kaden, Aoshi in his suit and trenchcoat drinking tea w/ Kenshin while the sakura is falling, unlike the sad sad 2nd OVA where Kenshin died of disease…

Game pre-ordered for the bonuses :) Very nice bonuses.. I’m glad they used the old voice recording for Saitou, it would sound too strange w/ all the old cast except him, his voice was just too iconic.

Just nice to hear the OP Sobakasu again w/ new animation. I don’t care if the game is only so-so, half expected that anyway on a PSP.. I came across this remix ver sung by Shimokawa Mikuni and it was pretty good too, the lyrics were easier to hear than Judy and Mary.

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

NO, don’t remind me of Seisouhen, that was so sad! Man, that was crushingly sad. When Sano hugs Kenshin, just seeing him so fragile was kinda shocking at the time. I haven’t seen Seisouhen in a long long time, so maybe I’ll just laugh at it now, eheh (I won’t ='( ).

May I ask what the bonuses are? Indeed, the voice cast for Ruroken was really great, and it’s good that the main voices were left intact!

Oh, thanks! I love that song, it’s so cute. Gotta search for that remix! Ruroken is back <3 (for now)

        • Aoshi00

Yea, Seisou-hen was nothing like Watsuki’s happy ending, but still it was a masterpiece in terms of animation and raw emotion, very sad.. I still cried a little when I watched it on youtube (my DVDs buried in other piles of stuffs now). It pained Sano to see the once legendary swordsman and his best friend reduced to almost nothing too, literally withering away… The animation in this new OP drawn in the clean style of char design Nakajima Atsuko (Ranma, You’re under arrest) looks pretty good, even Misao looks like a kid now (like how Watsuki drew her in the end *.*…), but I need to see Aoshi’s new Jinchuu ninja outfit, I think a new Jinchuu anime is very possible if they’re serious in the revival of the series.I just pre-ordered from AmiAmi,…The bonuses seem to be a booklet (w/ new Watsuki sketches/interview/screenshots from the new opening), an arkanoid game w/ RK char sound effects (Oro!), 10 PSP themes, and a voice/alarm clock application (Ororo!), not bad for a pre-order bonus that doesn’t cost extra. The game in the trailer looks pretty decent too like the ink effect. Sobakasu was a very catchy song, I liked the 2nd OP “1/2” too w/ the Juppongatana. K, found this on youtube, Kawamoto Makoto live, can’t believe it was 98 and now 2011 is coming, crazy! (Is it a coincidence Sano/Saitou/Aoshi are staring at us when the song was repeating “Aishiteru” lol)

          • Argh why are you posting all these videos? Makes me want to watch RuroKen all over again while playing 1/3 Junjou na Kanjou on loop XD

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

I am not exaggerating when I say that seeing Jinchuu animated would be a dream come true. It would be that cool to me. That arc was perfect, there’s really no other way to describe it.

Hey, that’s a lot of stuff! I’ll have to pass on this one for now… I’ll get it later (Replicant comes first).

            It is a coincidence… I guess =P

1998, ouch. Straight into my favorites! Thanks again, and since we’re into videos, take this one!

And Fourth Avenue Cafe, MIDI version.

I love the original one, but I associate the MIDI version with Kenshin’s return from catatonia, striking Kujiranami with a Kuzu Ryu Sen, which is one of my favorite moments from the manga. Absolutely flawless.

(I don’t know why, but I was hearing the MIDI at the time =P)

            I guess there’s not an OP/ED from Ruroken that I don’t like!

          • Aoshi00

Thanks, very sweet 4th Ave Cafe midi indeed. It’s amazing how good the simple midi sounds just like the 8-bit Nier music on the new CD. I think Heart of Sword and 4th Ave Cafe were my no. 1 & 2 favorite Kenshin songs. 1/3 no Junjou-na Kanjou was good too, but I didn’t like it as much, maybe it was because it was the song for the filler arcs, and it showed us the false hope of Jinchuu :)

The big roster in this game is pretty cool, pretty cool they sneak Fuji in there..

It would be great to finally have a Jinchuu series (re-do the flashback in Watsuki style), followed by two more RK fighting games, one like Blazblue and the other UNS2, just quality games. We don’t need any more mediocre milking like other anime franchises :)

  • So if I play Hiko, does that mean instant win for me every time?

  • Kris

Wow, it’s been ages since I’ve heard a Judy and Mary song…
I’m not really sure what to make of the combat just yet though… I hope they release a demo!

  • The fighting looks a little slugish, but the roster looks HUGE. Hopefully we’ll see a localisation. And as usual, a decent single player would be awesome :D

  • PLEASEEE MAKE AN EFFORT IN THIS GAMEE T_T, all the previous SUck and Watsuki is a fighting game lover!!!! SO PLEASEEE PLEASEEE DON’T LET IT SUCK T_T!!!

  • meganeshounen

It does seem like they’re going to include all major players from the start up to the Shishio arc, but I bet they’ll include Enishi as that “extra hard to unlock secret character who’s completely unrelated to the current events”.

Just like Yondaime/Minato in the Narutimate Hero series.
