The Legend of Dragoon Sneaks To PlayStation Game Archives

By Ishaan . December 22, 2010 . 12:29am

Even though their official release list for the week doesn’t include it, Sony’s legendary Legend of Dragoon is now on PlayStation Archives in Japan…but you can only find it on the front page.

If you log on to the Japanese PSN from your PSP and access the Game Archives section, you should see The Legend of Dragon on the front page, downloadable for 600 yen. Access the “new releases” section of the Game Archives, and it’s not there. Very odd.

    What the bloody hell!

Was there a game where opinions were split more than on this title?

    • neo_firenze

I’m honestly a little surprised by all the love I’m seeing.

I remember a pretty consistent view that Legend of Dragoon was a mediocre FFVIII clone that was all graphics (which, let’s be honest, PS1 polygons haven’t aged well), had too many random encounters, and had a cliched and boring plot. To each his own…

That’s the reason I’d posted the comment — other threads here had given a feeling of nostalgia for the title I don’t recall a lot of at the time. As you said, it was just another rpg, although it did receive a bit of FFVII ‘killer’ hype. My own thoughts were not as much pure comparisons with VII but that titles we were already seeing from the likes of Atlus and Working Designs opened doors Dragoon didn’t go down.

Great news now it only has to come out on the North American PSN servers & other parts of the world. Then I will be really happy. Even more so if me buying the game leads to Legend of Dragoon 2 for either the PS3 or PSP2.

Glad to see this hasn’t been forgotten. I see discussions about this game every so often, but they usually end in trolling.

I really enjoyed Legend of Dragoon. It’s in my top 3 of “games I wish would get a sequel/prequel.”

You mean like how, back in the day, it was the cool thing to compare this game to Final Fantasy VII and pick apart every story and character element and tell everyone they were ripped straight from that game? As if, somehow, Final Fantasy VII was the first game to ever use common Japanese game tropes.

      • http://twitter.com/Megawarrior345 Elle

It was more compared to Final Fantasy VIII and was often called the ‘Final Fantasy killer’ from what I remember.

First time hearing about this!! Never knew it killed Final Fantasy?!? but it sure was an awesome experiment with the combo timing and dragon power. Gameplay mechanics i still perfer FF7 over 8 and 9.

damn it looks like the JP PSN store is now complete with all the PS1 best jprg’s, FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, Xenogears, Parasite Eve Archive, Chrono Chross and trigger(i think) and now The Legend of Dragoon, is there any PS1 game japan has been missing?

i gotta learn japanese fast, PSN JP store is soo godly O_O

    • neo_firenze

There are still quite a few big RPGs MIA on the Japan store: Dragon Quest VII, Persona 1, both parts of Persona 2, Soul Hackers, Suikoden II, Breath of Fire 3 and 4, Valkyrie Profile, Lunar 1 and 2…

But yeah, there sure is a lot of good stuff. Square-Enix in particular has released most of their good games.

That’s one of the games i’d definitely like to play one day,but unfortunately the game is being sold for ridiculous prices right now on ebay and amazon.
Here’s hoping one day Sony will put it in the EU store including other acclaimed and hard to find games like Tombi1-2 for example.

I always knew that this was coming. And once this hit’s America, it will be the start of….Operation: Sequel….MWAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Arcm

I love this game still one of my favorites of the ps1 era along with Xenogears, Suikoden 2, Brave Fencer Mushasi, and FF 9.

    • Pesmerga00

You have good taste. Some of my all time favs.

Never played this, actually. Be interested in trying. I downloaded Front Mission 3 last night from the PSN, so I’m always up for whatever games I happened to miss during the PS1 era.

WTF japan, where the hell is the US version, why does the world taunt me.

Sony dosen’t want you to know something about Legend of Dragoon is seems to be.

NOOOOO Japan, do not discover another good game! Otherwise the Tokyo Tower will be destoryed…Again.

  • BadenBadenPrinny

Do I want to double dip in this game. Yes, most certainly; US release plox.

  • Raven_Shinobi

I remember how some FF7 fanboys looked down on this game. One of the silliest complaints that I heard back then was that the protagonist had spiky blond hair and used a sword like Cloud.

One of my favorite games from the PSX era. The story had what I believe to be one of the best plot twists in an RPG, and the gameplay was refreshing for its time. My only complaint was the rough translation and the inability to turn off those annoying voices in combat. A true classic.

    Double Slash!

    That is all.

Argh… title of this news post had me thinking I could be buying this game right now….>_<… Hopefully this is a sign that SCEA will bless us with this some time this year :D.

I've never been able to finish this game because my friend took the game back from me, but I always knew I would get another chance one of these days :D.
