Akujin Is Another Bullet-Heavy Xbox Live Indie Games Shoot-em-up

By Ishaan . January 3, 2011 . 9:30am

Xbox Live Arcade has a lot of shoot-em-ups, like Vorpal, which we linked to over the weekend. Here’s another, titled Akujin, also for 80 points ($1.00). Akujin’s description both in video and in written form proudly mention that the game is built to be difficult.

Seriously… the 360 seems to be getting all the Shmup games.

It would annoy me if it wasn’t for the fact that most of my Shmups are on my PC anyways.

As a pc gamer we are spoilt with the sheer amount of shmups we can play with both indie / doujin and Mame / console emulation. We cant have everything now can we, ild rather have most the shmups on 1 console rather then spread between every one. The only gripe is with the 360s regoin lock which sucks arse for anyone who doesnt have a J360 or a modded normal one.

I wish the guy whose just hacked the PS3′s rootkey (needing no phsyical modding to jailbreak it,) would do the same for the 360s region lock so that ppl can actually BUY the japanese originals

This is nothing compared to Touhou.

Does anyone else find it annoying that whenever any shooter is mentioned, someone has to mention Touhou or point out how said game is inferior to Touhou in some way? I mean, I’m a Touhou Project fan, but sheeeeesh.

      • 5parrowhawk

Agreed. In this case the guy might actually be right, but it still irks me. Doubly so when people try to claim that Touhou is more difficult than Cave’s stuff. In the latter case it makes you wonder if they actually play the games.
Part of the appeal of Touhou is that it’s actually playable by mere mortals (on Normal mode), so I feel like these inflated claims are kind of missing the point.

        • TrevHead

I agree, while he is right as in this case Touhou is much better, but the fact that someone will make the same comment for nearly every god damn shooter video including games that are nothing like touhou has made this into a pet peeve for me (along with bloody chuck norris and dodge rain quips).

We’re only human *shrug* we live life by comparing things to other things.

Ya know, I don’t know where you came up by comparing this to Touhou at all.

I thought I was supposed to be the only bad example around here :/

They look entirely different. I mean, Shmups are like puzzle games, each one has different goals in mind. I mean, you might play three different “match three’ games, but they’ll be built in entirely different ways.

A Cave game is different than a Tohou game which is different than a G.Rev game. Even within these companies, their titles are totally separate from each other. Shmups are really hard to compare, and then of course there’s a matter of opinion. For instance, I enjoy Cotton 2 more than DoDonPachi.

I mean, that’s kind of like saying looking at a loaf of bread and saying “This is nothing compared to a tomato.” You may be entirely right, and Tohou looks like it has more polish, but since they’re nothing alike, maybe some people would rather have some bread (in this case, old-school $1 shmuppage) than a tomato.

Eh, this one looks pretty bad, actually.

    • TrevHead

Yea I agree, judging from the video its not my cup of tea. Those small hard to see bullets is a sin for any shmup and the seemingly dull stage design (still aleast it does have a stage in it unlike many touhou clones).

I would guess that its a western developer thats given it a Japanese title rather then it comming from Japan as it seems like a euroshmup (which some gamers who normally arnt into playing shmups actually might like)

    reminds me of gradius ^^
