A Blurry Look At Final Fantasy XIII-2 And Lightning’s New Rival [Update]

By Ishaan . January 18, 2011 . 4:07am

Before we get to scrambled screenshots, 4gamer posted this picture of Lightning in her new Final Fantasy XIII-2 costume.

These screenshots were from a teaser trailer of the Square Enix 1st Production Premiere. Motomu Toriyama, director of Final Fantasy XIII and its sequel, explained the game will have a dramatic story involving Lightning’s rival. In the teaser video, Lightning clashed swords with a new character dressed in purple clothes.

As long as they don’t start singing.

    • Pesmerga00

~Secretly wants them to start singing.~

      • You know, Lightning always reminded me more of Paine than Yuna. Now, Serah, I can definitely imagine Serah singing.

In fact, I can imagine Lightning cross her arms, looking really annoyed, and then under her breath saying, “Gullwings get the gold,” next to a frantically posing Serah.

        • Pesmerga00

Then Serah can help thaw Lightning’s icy heart with the power of song.

It’s the tale of two girls and a DudeBro, where they find the real meaning of love, and what its like to be free women.

  • cmurph666

I just don’t know what to think of this…

    FF13 was lame.
    FF14 was god awful.
Of course, FF13-2 is the only logical thing to do, right?!

    • karasuKumo

Two negatives make a positive ;) Or at least I’m hoping they will.

    • Zero_Destiny

Naturally… why on earth would square move on to Final Fantasy XV when they can still milk the franchise for all it’s worth. Let’s just be hopeful that this game will be different. *cross fingers* please don’t be disappointing like XIII was.

      • It takes a lot less time to write a new script in a pre-existing world and design a few new characters and costumes than it does to make a whole world from the ground up. It’ll be years before we see FF15 whether we get XIII-2 or not.

        • Darkrise

More like whether we live long enough to survive next year. =/

    • Testsubject909

You never know, is what I’d like to say.

The track record isn’t very encouraging.

… But hey, at least we know FFXIII versus’s gameplay is going to be solid…

      Mainly because it’s Kingdom Heart.

      • Zero_Destiny

Yeah I complain but I’m hopeful too. Still not really a fan of sequels though. Much rather have the next installment but if that’s what the people want and the game is in fact good I won’t hold it against square for making them.

        • Bakuryukun

          You don’t want a sequel….you want a sequel. =D

          • Zero_Destiny

            Lol You caught me!!!

    • Bakuryukun

A lot of people actually liked XIII, I admit that the game did have flaws, but it wasn’t terrible in any sense imo. Also XIII made a lot of money. Also they said they had a lot of ideas and resources that they didn’t end up using for the first game. So…it makes total sense for them to make a sequel to me.

  • I’m having a strange feeling about his game seeing Lightning wearing an armor and a shield and a normal sword. It also has a bit of Versus XIII feeling.

  • badmoogle
    • Thank you

    • Looks good.

    • I already have a bad feeling about this, the debut trailer left me with a weak impression, it just doesn’t looks like a FF game more like another Dynasty Warrior trailer i’ve seen.

      • badmoogle

I try not to get too excited by trailers in general anymore.I was uber excited when the first trailer of XIII came out half a decade ago only to be lead to disappointment.

However if it was a gameplay trailer rather than FMV well that’s another thing.

  • Please, less drama, please. I’ll never be able to take this stuff seriously…

    • Hraesvelgr

Can’t have a JRPG without Japanese melodrama, especially in a modern Final Fantasy.

      • Zero_Destiny

Sadly you are correct. Let’s just hope the melodrama is accompanied by a story that’s interesting.

        • Testsubject909

Depends entirely on the way Squeenix decides to handle the narrative this time around.

I remember a previous interview with a writer for Squeenix. She was in dismay at how she was told the story was unimportant of sort, and rather to focus on building events and connect them along the ‘story’ of sort that would build from these.

Additionally, she was called in late, as opposed to being called early or first so to better weave both gameplay and story together.

Not unless they’ve learned their lessons well could we be guaranteed a good game… But who knows, such methods sometimes works well.

I’d say. Don’t put your hopes up, but keep yourself open for pleasant surprises if ever.

          • Zero_Destiny

:U That just makes me more upset with square, you’d think they would of gave at least a little more consideration to the story. I’ll be the first to say the story isn’t the most important part (opinions differ and that’s cool) but really calling in people at the last minute? Trying to just weave a story together based on events and gameplay. T_T I’d expect that out of FFVIII (If you ask me the story in it had to be done that way, no man could of wrote that in a normal reasonable fashion, lol sorry if you do like VIII but that story was just unacceptable at least to me[still a good game thou]) but not this!!! Doesn’t seem fair to their fans. But yeah I’ll stay hopeful, I’d like to think companies listen to both their fans’ and the reviewers’ criticisms.

      • Guest

Even other Asians from different parts of the world generally consider Japanese melodrama to be overdone, overacted (and cheesy)

        • Aoshi00

I thought Korean dramas were even more melodramatic *.*? Dunno, only watched Winter Sonata.. Haven’t seen Jpn drama in recent years though, loved the ones in the 90’s..

    • RupanIII

Are you talking about the plot or the comment section? ;)

  • i wish we get a costume bonus, i liked her first suit more

    • same i’m not really digger her in Armour it looks kinda tacty :(

  • Final Fantasy 13-2: Soul Calibur!!

And Please tell me this takes place AFTER 13! I’ve defended you guys about reusing FF13 Resources, but you gotta help me out here!

    • You mean Final Fantasy XIII-2: Cocoon Profile.

  • Yay, best news of the morning!!!!!!!!! I so can not wait and it has Lightning too in an epic outfit, how for the officially released trailer and visuals. Hope please still be there!!! Winter 2011 cant come fast enough, day 1!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow Lightning looks so much more hot in her knight outfit.

Who is this mysterious rival? Let the speculation begin. I’m gonna go with a reincarnated Paine or a male version of Paine :D

  • PrinceHeir

did lightning become the queen of cocoon or something? :D

will be looking forward to this for sure ^^

hopefully they bring back the voice actors from the previous game. Maaya Sakamoto FTW ^^

i wonder how many years has it been since it’s ending? im expecting at least a year or 2.

    • Aoshi00

Wonder if Lightning is an aunty yet :) Go Snow! lol..

  • karasuKumo

The armor is nice but I don’t like the feathery bit on the back. Maybe it’ll look better in HD.

The trailer is nice :) I love the music, Lightnings new gunblade looks pimpin. Possible DLC for Duodecim in the future?

  • And this is why i am glad i have a PS3 and know Japanese. Gonna import it.

  • shion16

  • PrinceHeir

    thanks for the video :D

the music seems to have a different feel, which im not surprised since Masashi Hamauzu just left the company after this game.

  • Hexen

the armor.. the skimpier, the better XD

    • Testsubject909

Are you talking about Vaan for Dissidia Duodecim?

  • As someone who loved XIII, I am not really that impressed by the clip, but it’s a teaser trailer and teaser trailers almost never have anything interesting about them.

  • i387
  • joesz

I’m super happy about these news and I hope we don’t get alot of hatred in this board:)

    • Bakuryukun

oh but we will. Because it’s Square Enix, and Square Enix apparently killed everyone’s dog after the merger.

Please move on to greener pastures, Squeenix!

    • Bakuryukun

OR. Maybe people can stop hyping or bashing a game they’ve never even played so much that there expectations are so high or so low that they can’t possibly enjoy the game on it’s own merits. That may also be a solution

      • Actually, I just want Square Enix to move on to other projects. I’d rather see more of FF Agito (aka Type-0) or something new.

I never berated FF13 or FF13-2 in my post by the way.

    • Zero_Destiny

Lol the smug Prinny Pic made that all the more hilarious!!! But I do have to agree with Bakuryukun in at least giving it chance when it does come out. Other than that you sir are a genius. XD

  • Guest

XIII was awesome. Couldn’t care less what the haters think. I for one am hungry for more.

    • Testsubject909

No no no. Wrong line of thoughts.

You should be saying “Couldn’t care less about the hatred”. Not about what the haters think.

Gather the opinions of all, your allies, your opponents. Gather them up and find the unbearable truths to be had. From there, state your opinion in manners that are irrefutable and in which you can guarantee no hatred upon your personal enjoyment of a game, as opposed to driving up further conflict through nothing but blind statement supported only by emotions and disregard for general truths.

Know the failings of the games you love, know the successes of the games you hate. Understand why hatred and love can spawn from any game, and you avoid needless hatred and confrontation, instead drawing more upon understanding, camaraderie and a far more open spirit.

Draw more gamers in, appeal to them rather then set them off from ever being able to enjoy what you enjoy simply out of sheer constant conflict. Spread the gaming lore, the gaming joy and discard these overly simplistic ideas such as “haters gonna hate” that provide far too little insight and wisdom upon the whole matter.

And then… You’ll find that the hatred will quell, that all will calm, and that gamers will find a finer era and age within the gaming community…

Oh but what the hell am I bothering for, right?

Nobody’s going to listen, especially not some overly huge wall o text that’s far too much of a bother to read, right?

      • It’s an opinion about a game, not a debate about gun control. Your opinion is the only thing that matters. If you liked the game, then look forward to the sequel, hoping they replicated what you liked. If you hated it, either ignore the sequel or hope they changed the things you didn’t. The opinions of others should mean nothing when it comes to whether or not you enjoyed or didn’t enjoy something.

        • Testsubject909

          That’s what you say.

But think on the larger scale. Let’s say there’s a hundred gamers, sixty of them don’t enjoy RPGs to begin with. All 100 play RPGs. 60% of them complains about the game being boring.

Now there you have, 60 gamers being trolls, being haters, being annoyances who spreads ignorance and further bad mouthing, discouraging many gamers out there or even causing great annoyance to the gaming community, affecting in waves the enjoyment of what could be a great RPG game.

And in turn those effects the numbers and sales, which are what are primarily looked at by publishing houses and investors, which in turn affects the games you’ll be playing. Oh, of course, there’s always looking into the gaming community to see the support of the gamers themselves, but that doesn’t always happen.

Alternatively, let’s get 30 gamers who’ve played games since the Atari age, enjoying games of all sorts and helping gamers everywhere across the world… Suddenly, in comes 200 gamers who’ve only started playing one new game, and then heralds it as the absolute best. Badmouthing every other game that isn’t that one game they’ve played, having a very limited library of games they’ve played and completely ignoring any or all other types of games they’d certainly love and enjoy, even going so far as to name themselves the elites while denying that proper role for the more wise members of the gaming community.

What happens then in the long run?

…Well… That these opinionated folks left unchecked causes great trouble in the gaming community, do cause a repercussion in our ability to enjoy ourselves, to enjoy both a game, and to enjoy our time outside of the game itself.

Opinions are fine, but the truth needs be properly applied as well, and with this heralding of opinions as the base truth, we find ourselves with a lot of griefers and haters who do nothing to properly portrait the gaming community in a positive light.

Mind you. I’m writing all this while slightly drowsy, but I do believe I am clear enough to state: It may not be gun control, but it doesn’t mean one cannot debate seriously about games.

It is a passion for many, and even if it’s a bit of a poor use of a meme… Gaming is serious business.

      • Guest

        Umm, okay.

        • Don’t mind him. He’s taking a class.

          • Testsubject909

Oh, thank you for the belittlement.

  • thebanditking

Really? I just can’t believe they are actually going through with this. I know they wanted to turn XIII into a series but unlike 7 and 10 the following for this one does not seem as strong to justify it. Oh well, I’m not complaining I will happily pick this up for my PS3 when it releases, now if I could just get back to playing FFXIII (stupid backlog!)

  • raymk

I like her armor but there’s always going to be fans of the original costumes. Like tifa from ff7 although i like her original better the AC costume is still very good.

  • IceRomancer

I liked 13 alot actually and this looks to be amazing!
I look forward to hearing more about this!

  • Where did the Gunblade go?

  • Raidou

    Yes! Bold Square-Enix! Try again!

  • Happy Gamer

was lightening always this “sexy” if u get my drift or does (fill in FF game number)-2 always makes em more…sexy

  • Lightning’s costume is… rather ridiculous (and fanservicey).

  • Hmm

They said something about cancelling content which never made it into the Final version of FF13, something about that load of content massive enough to be considered as another separate game…

Hmm I wonder if that’s why FF XIII-2 was born, to milk a cow to its very max?

  • Remina

I’d have to say this looks much more appealing to me. Lighting has a “Celes”-look to her in her new outfit imo.

    • Remina

      sorry for the double post

  • Remina

I have to say this looks quite appealing. Lightning has a Celes-look to her in her new clothes imo.
    Officially excited.

I had a bad feeling about FFXIII when it was close to its release date; but I’m excited for this game based on the fact that SquareEnix has all the characters (and some of the world maybe?) already created from the first game and can focus on writing a better story and adding the content missing from FFXIII.

Note: the story wasn’t awful, I was just thrown off by the linearity of the way it was presented: no proper towns; no world map; no sidequests until late in the game: [insert other common missing elements].

I think that FFXIII-2 will be what FFXIII was supposed to be.
