Final Fantasy XIII-2 Releases In North America And Europe “Next Winter”

By Ishaan . January 18, 2011 . 5:15am

Final Fantasy XIII-2 was just announced by Square Enix at their 1st Production Department conference at Roppongi Hills, Japan. Japanese gamers will get to play the sequel to Final Fantasy XIII sometime this year.

Meanwhile, Square Enix Europe and USA shot out a press release of their own, mentioning that Westerners get Final Fantasy XIII “next winter,” which sounds like it could be a year from now. Final Fantasy XIII-2 is slated for release this year in Japan.

They also say that the game will “exceed” Final Fantasy XIII in every way and feature an “evolved” battle system, but don’t go into specifics.

Motomu Toriyama, the director of both Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2, stated that the game will feature a dramatic story involving lead character Lightning’s rival. The game’s tagline is why “does mankind defy its fate?”

  • karasuKumo

I have a feeling it’ll be similar to how the first was released with Japan getting it December or earlier and the rest of the world getting it February onwards.

    • PrinceHeir

      this ^^

make sense, japan get’s it december last week, while the rest of the world march 2012.

      hopfully Versus XIII is Q4 2012 :D

      • karasuKumo

Yeah it would make sense to pace the releases, by the time we properly finish Type-0 it wont be too long until XIII-2 then after we are finished with that it wont be too long until Versus.

I really hope we wont have to wait until March 2013 for Versus (If Japan get it December 2012) :(. I’d much prefer a Summer 2012 worldwide release but that seems unrealistic :/

  • Ereek

“Next winter” as in Winter 2011-12? Or Winter 2012-13? The way it’s worded sounds to me is a Q1 2012 release.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

We’re thinking a year-ish from now. Whenever a publisher says “Winter” rather than “Fall,” it usually ends up meaning Jan/Feb.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000301072427 Mark Shaver

A Rival who we’d never seen or heard of at this point, but W/e. As Long as it means Winter this year, then I’m fine. A Lot of Good stuff from SE this year (Well, only like 4 titles, but they’re all full of WIN!)

  • krokounleashed

Should be 2011/2012. As we are in Winter now, they couldn’t said “this” winter.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Val-Vieira/1174083080 Val Vieira

I don’t know how long SE’s has actually been working on this, but it seems like they’re getting faster at making games. I hope that that’s the case.

    • Caligula

I don’t really play FF, but I think the series actually has a pretty nice pace. Each game is far enough apart that people are left anxiously anticipating each installation and the series doesn’t get stale. It’s not like, say, Tales, where a game being released is not really news because one pops out practically six months.

Forget the haters. I want this!

    • SolidusSnake

      Preach it.

    • Apollokids

Wouldn’t it be amazing if this game was the epic people hoped the original had been.

      • Testsubject909

Amazing, Ironic, Saddening, Depressing, Disappointing, Surprising.

Choose any word that ends with an -ing that really suits your mood about this game.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Farid-Belkacemi/1073052585 Farid Belkacemi

          That would be Ironic :( e.g FF X-2, I didn’t like FF X too :p

          • Masengan

Glad to know I’m not alone.

    • ThunderGod_Cid

      I second that.

    • http://twitter.com/Xuiz enorka miho

      i agree..

    • Happy Gamer

i actually was kind of waiting for something like this to happen. I hope it’s ass backwards from X and X-2 ; more items, variety, better story (elaborate on some plot holes), more exploration etc.

the world 13 built itself upon is extremely interesting. That was the only thing that made me keep playing 13. but they ended it without really letting us explore and tell a story out of it. that was one of the major reason why this game left me a “poop” mark on it after i finished it.

13 is like a really mediocre movie that has extremely amazing technology, hence worth “watching” it once.

i hope they make it more of a game than a cinematic experience. in part 2.

but nah that won’t happen :(

  • Darkrise

^$@%! I just spoiled myself with what happens to Lightning! I didn’t even finish XIII yet…

    • karasuKumo

You aren’t alone :( It was worth it though :)

      • PersonaBull

Yea, I still haven’t finished XIII either (difficulty ramped up way fast…wanted to do side quests first to bulk up a bit >.<;;) but I at least saw that happening, so I'm not disappointed that I got semi-spoiled. At least I don't know how exactly it all went down, right? :P

All I know is….thighs….<3<3<3 Lightning looks too good sometimes

        • karasuKumo

Yeah if anything it’s made me want to finish it even more haha

It’s always the legs with her lol

        • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

And Nomura designed Lightning based on a female Cloud…

          http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/921/femalecloud.jpg

          high level trap…

          • Zero_Destiny

SE you’re the reason I grew up so confused!!! XD

          • Testsubject909

You mean based off of cross-dressing Cloud.

          • Zero_Destiny

I believe the design team was told to just make a female Cloud, but it doesn’t help with him cross dressing and everything.

          • http://modorenai.livejournal.com/ modorenai

LOL! Where is that picture from!? It’s hilarious!

          • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

I have no idea either :P I got it while I was browsing pictures quite some time ago

        • http://twitter.com/Mfufufu Eri

Forget the side quests, I can beat the last boss in about a minute but am still getting my ass handed to me by some of the hunts.

          • PersonaBull

I’ll keep this as spoiler-free as possible..

The boss at the end of the dead town (after which the rest of the side quests open up to you) took me a good half an hour of battle. If the rest of the fights aren’t nearly as hard then sure I’ll forget the side quests. (Actually, the battle itself wasn’t really hard so much as annoyingly filled with detrimental effects..only had one person attacking most of the time while the others dealt with healing/status effects) I mostly just wanted to finish the last section of the crystallium that opened up directly after that boss fight.

All this news is making me want to just go finish it today, actually.
Edit: Tried starting it up. IMPOSSIBLE! I’ll need to start over from the beginning. I have no idea what I was doing, what items/quests I was going for, and how to even play the game. Oh well, that’s why I bought it in the first place, to play it again! :)

    • Xeahnort

I think the title of an article and trailers should come with spoiler warning.

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Please announce the soundtrack too. Please Square Enix the music sounded awesome and I must have it. Gah, Im so buying all these FF music soundtracks because, well the music sounds so amazing from well previous FF entries (tactics a2, FFXIII are my favorite thus far).

Oh and of course Day 1 for the game. Im at 31 games now just for PS3 for this year now X_x

    • PrinceHeir

actually with Masashi Hamauzu gone now(he also did Dirge of Cerberus which the soundtrack was pure god like) i wonder how the music will change? a more rock theme now?

“They also say that the game will “exceed” Final Fantasy XIII in every way and feature an “evolved” battle system, but don’t go into specifics”

if the gameplay is similar to X-2(full control party, class based system, extra missions, tons of sidequest, more open world, and multiple endings) this is gonna be good ^^

      • Croix

While I didin’t care much for the general feel of X-2 (nor did many others), I have to agree that those mechanic changes are exactly what XIII needed.

      • badmoogle

X-2 was one of my least favourite FF’s.But if XIII-2 will be anything like it it will be tons more better than XIII ever was.

Glad you liked the ost of Dirge of Cerberus,i thought i was the only one.Imo the soundtrack (and graphics) of XIII were by far the best things in that horrible excuse of a game.

  • http://twitter.com/pipsterfinn Pip Murphy

I’m actually looking forward to this more than I thought I would. I liked the ending of FFXIII more than most of the game, so it left me on an upbeat note. That and I managed to get my mum into playing it. :D

    • http://twitter.com/Mfufufu Eri

I wish I could get my mom into playing it xD

  • i387

HQ version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgOKJ5Cjq70 (see nao or nevar, will likely get removed fast)

  • Aiddon

Toriyama, you’re a terrible writer AND director. The only good that’s coming out of this is that you’re about as far away from FFXV as possible. Though I don’t expect Square to be smart with that and give it to Matsuno’s boys who are the the only people left at Square who actually have TALENT

    • Testsubject909

Are we really ever going to have a FFXV?

Think about it. FNC’s multi-series FF13 in three parts, along with a sequel to FF13. What next? FF13 Versus 2? or Versus Neo? Or Versus Final Mix… Followed by the Final Mix International Version?

      FF13 portable remix for PSP2?

      FF13 Agito 3D for 3DS?

      FF14 Gold edition?

      FF Type-0. FF Type-1, FF Type-2, FF Type-3?

      Do we really expect FF15?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Farid-Belkacemi/1073052585 Farid Belkacemi

        FF15 ? In 2018 maybe…

      • Zero_Destiny

lol I hear you. I get tired of the worlds in games quickly. There are some I’d like to go back to and some series like Suikoden/Dragon Quest that only give you a region or so of the same world or has it 100′s or 1,000′s of years apart so it’s still fresh. I’d rather have each game be unique and each have there own different qualities and laws and physics and species etc. That’s one of the best things about Final Fantasy it’s like an anthology of unique stories bound together by good gameplay and some really minor and almost shallow(I’m not saying bad, just there for the sake of the fans and tradition) relating elements like the crystals, moogles and Chocobos.

  • http://twitter.com/Xuiz enorka miho

It is not very likely that SE will let fans wait for a whole year after the release from Japan. Things will get too cold by then. SE is probably not that stupid I’d say. So I speculate that it is going to be a 2012 February release. Technically speaking it is next year’s winter. But, well, Japan are good with their ambiguos sentences. So, if they did not announce the exact release date. We can’t be very sure of it.

  • runesong

YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!

Just as Shiloh said, forget the haters! I loved XIII. ^_^

    • Testsubject909

Forget the hatred, do not dismiss the criticism.

There is still truth and value to be had within the plethora of opinions and blindly defending your own solely upon your enjoyment is a sure path to ruins and confrontation as opposed to understand and acceptment.

Recognize the failings and the successes, know where your opinion stands despite the truth, and all should be well.

      • runesong

I totally agree. I could write an adorable essay on the many things I disliked about XIII. But in the end, the things I enjoyed about the game far outweighed the things I disliked. And if we’re talking about a sequel that aims to improve the original in every way, I see every reason to be excited.

The “ignore the hater” talk comes from people who take their negative outlook on the game too far. In the end, complainers are always louder than people with a positive opinion. Especially when it comes to a controversial game.
That doesn’t mean their opinions are invalid, it just means we’re going to see many of the same opinions over and over and over again… and that gets old.

  • Zero_Destiny

*Face Palm* Well now I have to play through another Final Fantasy XIII. Oh well let’s hope what they said about everything being better is true and the game still looks as good as the first one. Also I happen to really love the logo for the game.

  • Hraesvelgr

Square Enix hates pants on women, don’t they? Or, at the very least, anything that covers the thighs at all.

    • http://twitter.com/Mfufufu Eri

But you have to admit, Lightning has sexy thighs.

      • Hraesvelgr

Well, it’s just that the Square Enix guys don’t seem to think females can be decent characters without throwing in tons of fanservice. Looking back at The Third Birthday, they were releasing new costume info at a regular rate, to the point of where we knew more about the costumes and costume tearing than anything else in the game. It didn’t help that nearly every costume, regardless of tearing, was just cheap fanservice, instead of ones that actually looked interesting.

        • Testsubject909

The male characters are fan service themselves you know.

Look at FF13 Versus’s protagonist. He’s not made for the player to reflect upon…

He’s made for the female gamers to go “Squee! He so dweamy!” and buy the game based off of his looks.

You can feel free to look at MGS2 to see more about Japan attempting to lure in female gamers.

          • http://twitter.com/Xuiz enorka miho

hey.. didn’t xbox vow to be coming for daughters all around the globe recently? lol.. and my.. never underestimate fan girls..they are very die hard.. they can unexpectedly boost your sale and be the pillar… justin bieber is the prove although i dislike him…

While most of the guys love to bitch bout almost everything in the world except boobs.. and are always hard to please these days.. so why not make something for consumers that can ensure a good sale? as long as the game is good and not too mediocre like the recent FF then why not? I do not mean the complains are useless… it is actually good for improvement.. but sometime it is just too bias… which might be one of the reason for the westernize jap games…

I know its bad news for the guy.. and you can say girls are shallow.. but hey.. this is business… It is the same with actresses with hot body and pretty face but with an “ok” acting skills are still for the win right?

Beside many things changes since back then… many male gamers do not have the same perspective in games since like what 10 years ago when most of the people are still in their teens? so, its self explanatory…

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_S2UKKIGGOA4V5EIFXAD7BQQOV4 Heehee

            Kinect be coming for daughters.

          • http://modorenai.livejournal.com/ modorenai

I was about to say “Yeah but at least the male characters are always fully clothed…” until I remembered Vaan. And Ashley from Vagrant Story (his pants make me LOL – it’s the first time I’d ever seen that kind of fanservice on a male video game character).

So now I’ll just have to settle for “Yeah but at least most of the male characters are fully clothed…” :p

        • Joanna

Lightning’s outfit is actually not too bad…yeah it’s sexy (and I like that about it), but it’s not tacky in the sense that it leaves nothing to the imagination like say Rikku’s FFX-2 outfit. I personally think it’s a great compromise: sexy yet Lightning still retains her dignity (not a total sex object/ chuck of meat). :)

    • PersonaBull

      But..but thighs are my favorite…

    • Barrit

      pants are the devil

    • Masengan

Yuna* and Aerith don’t show any legs.

      *Not counting X-2.

      • Testsubject909

Yuna appealed heavily to foot fetishists.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

      As do I, actually.

    • http://modorenai.livejournal.com/ modorenai

My sentiments exactly. I totally rolled my eyes when the camera zoomed in to focus on Lightning’s bare thigh. Her new outfit’s pretty ridiculous. (And so’s her old one actually. There is no way she would actually be able to fight in real life without the skirt riding up to her hips.)

  • godmars

So does this mean that vsXIII will be out before this?

Pretty sure that if its after, much less the same time, that people are going to be pissed.

  • Barrit

So this is a direct sequel to FFXIII? When I first heard the news about it being a story of Lightning’s exploits, my first impression was that it would be more of a backstory about her previous military career. Is there a translation out about what she says in the trailer? It shows the ending of XIII, but the narration could be something like “This happened in my life, blah blah blah, but this is my story before I got to that point” kind of deals.

Also, does anyone have any ideas about how likely it is that XIII-2 will get a Chinese + English release like the first part?

  • evilmoogle

    “does mankind defy its fate?”
    Here’s is your answer: Yes.
Never saw hot blooded robot anime’s?

And is this some time travel s**t?
I bet 5$ that lightning will be transported to this Cacoon vs pulse war.

    It’s kinda obvious.

  • Bruce

“does mankind defy its fate?” … i wonder if it would be similar to P3 plot , that won’t be the worst thing to happen i guess .

  • BadenBadenPrinny

and my expectations are still low

    • Testsubject909

      hear hear.

Best have low expectations and the possibility of a pleasant surprise then to get hyped up over little but empty promises and end up disappointed by the ordeal.

Smug self-satisfaction is rarely ever worth putting your hopes up on a company that’s been less then optimal to date.

  • zhemos

Hell yes. I can’t wait. Lightning ftw!

  • Darkrise

I just can’t help myself but I’m just going to say this. The rival is a female ver of Sephiroth. =) Imagine that, it’s so fitting and since it’s been mentioned before that Lightning is a previous design of Cloud, and he has Sephiroth as a “rival” I guess. Sooo~ It’s not too unusual for them to create a female Sephiroth right? RIGHT!? P.S It’s just a random post and speculation I just wanted to let out so don’t take it seriously for those crazy fans that might interpret it as “offensive”. T.T

    • http://twitter.com/Mfufufu Eri

She/He/It looked more like a male Paine to me…

  • thebanditking

Works for me we need more JRPGs on PS3 anyway, besides I am sure they will take at least some of the feedback they got from XIII into consideration which should yield a better product. I know I am set as I actually still like XIII despite its flaws.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

As XIII was my third favorite of the series, I look very forward to this.

  • Guest

    Cool story Square.

  • http://twitter.com/donayre21 miguel donayre

I hope its not like pokemon or the first game that you have to take turns attacking

  • superdry

I’m actually pretty excited about this since I did like FFXIII – the ending did make want a sequel to see what happens after it. Even though she was pretty cold, Lightning is my favourite character…so I’m always up for some more stories revolving around her.

The only thing I’m not liking is her suit of armor she’s wearing. The clothes in XIII looked better.

  • Happy Gamer

completely random but there was one thing i enjoyed in 13…
starting from when hope says “that’s how lightening gets around, highway fight.”

as much as i felt this game was mediocre, that highway fight scene was made of win…can’t deny that.

juss use that time to make those CG scenes for some amazing gaming experience SE :) im a happy gamer so i always keep hopes up
