Pokemon Manga To Reach Out To An Older Audience

By Ishaan . January 22, 2011 . 10:27am

If you’ve been keeping up with Pokémon Black/White coverage around the web, you already know that the games aim at spicing up Game Freak’s long-running RPG series in a few different ways, one of them being to try and appeal to longtime Pokémon players.

Black/White aren’t the only aspect of the franchise that are trying to appeal to Pokémon fans that may have grown up with — or even outgrown — the series; Pokémon manga in Japan is doing the same.

A new Pokémon manga series will be debut in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shounen Sunday magazine this March. Shounen Sunday targets a slightly older audience than Monthly CoroCoro Comic magazine, which is where Pokémon manga have been serialized in the past.

The image to the right is of the new series’ protagonist. No further details on the subject are known yet, but we’ll keep you posted.

Other series presently being serialized in Weekly Shounen Sunday include Hayate the Combat Butler, The World God Only Knows, Detective Conan and Kekkaishi.

  • Kekkaishi, if only Viz would releases the dvds already…Anyway, another pokemon one, its already much to handle with getting pokemon adventures and how here they are branching it out (Gold & Silver will continue while they introduce us to Pokemon Adventures:Diamond Pearl Platinum in March), though I will be interested in how the older audience one turns out.

I already thought it seemed to target older people with the evil elite four and gym leaders, freezing red, and my favorite gold facing danger in collapsing towers, etc. (I love the way gold names his pokemon, Exbo!!! Polibo!! Sudobo, lol!)

    • while they butchered the nicknames for the pokemon in the american release for pokemon special, it is indeed a good manga i wonder how this one will turn out too.

  • joesz

this protagonist/kid looks much better then Ash.

Ash is just an old man with special mitochondria/

    • Ash has been in the manga before?

      • Noo…
Well……His name is Red in the Pokemon Manga

        • Red is so not comparable to Ash, hes just much cooler and more awesome and even has an Eevee, an epic eevee, it was just odd that Ash would be brought up in a pokemon manga topic.

          • Is it that weird? we are talking about the first character every pokemon fan saw

          • You mean Red, right? ‘Cause that IS whom everyone saw first, unless you didn’t play the games before seeing the anime.

          • Exkaiser

Actually, the first character every Pokemon fan saw would be Professor Oa-

Oh wait, no, Red is on the title screen, nevermind.

          • @Exkaiser

If we’re being specific, the first ones we saw would be Jigglypuff and Gengar.

          • Exkaiser

@Mark Shaver: I thought it was Nidorino and Gengar?

            Regardless, you’re right.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Victorique-san wants to thank you ever so much for starting a Pokemon flame war. She may look eight years old, but really isn’t.

          • And as Victorique thanks him, she puts her little pipe in her mouth

          • Zero_Destiny

Now your Avatar is GOSICK? XD You sir change a lot. Oh well it is one of the better shows this season. And WildArms’ comment on the pipe made me laugh way more than I should of.

          • M’iau M’iaut

@ Zero — Gotta keep it fresh and kawaii!

          • Zero_Destiny

Nothing like keeping it Kawaii!!! XD

        • Red is not Ash.

          • I meant as a character out of the game, the first step out of the game pokemon made (at least globally, making it even more famous i should add). I got the game first, but when i think about pokemon now, i dont think about the little guy with hat i used in the first game, i remember Ash and pikachu

          • Most fans hate Ash now ’cause he’s a terrible trainer. Also his Pikachu is totally hacked. YOU CANNOT LEARN VOLT TACKLE AS A PIKACHU.

          • Zero_Destiny

Didn’t they give Ash his name BECAUSE it was one of the default names in the original games. I’m not calling the chara RED from the Manga Ash but really if we’re talking about just the games I think it’s fine to fondly remember the chara from the game as Ash (especially in my case, since I got Yellow first and had a Pikachu and all that XD)

      • joesz

My statement was a comparative sentence between two protagonists.
I didn’t even make any statements about any manga.

        • Youre statement is about the manga…ie comparing him to the manga protagonist, am I right? Bringing up Ash led me to believe that Ash had appeared in the manga once and had me on a quest to see if his image was in the manga.

          • joesz

Again I didn’t even bring up the manga. But,Ash had appeared in two manga. I hope that clarify it

          • Zero_Destiny

I’m pretty sure he was in the Electric Tale of Pikachu but I can’t remember the other one? What was it?

  • PrinceHeir

if they can make like 5D’s(it’s much more darker and mature than DM which is already mature)

    yeah i might watch it.

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

5D’s is more mature than the original YuGiOh? Wow, the original had some guy blowing his own brains out and another jumping out a window, among a lot of other things. That seems hard to beat

      • I’ve got 4 words for you:

        • Zero_Destiny

CARD GAMES ON MOTORCYCLES!!! Did you hear that Crow?! XD

        • PrinceHeir

well you can add Space and in HD to that ^^

    • Zero_Destiny

Hey I love 5D’s and GX but the original/season zero/MANGA trumps all those shows in DARKNESS. Seriously read it you’ll mind will be blown away (or at least MINDCRUSHED lol) at how violent it was before the series took a heel-face turn and focused on just DM.

    • PrinceHeir

i guess neither have you have seen the show no? card game on motorcycles? it’s much more than that, just goes to show you people only watch the 1st episode lol. ehh i won’t force you though. and i only said DM and yes i know the original heck DM was only a side story in the series but due to fans liking it made it’s own series.

and oh if you actually watch the way they duel on motorcycles there’s some crazy and awesome duels but whatever it’s your choice to watch it or not

      • Zero_Destiny

I love 5D’s it’s awesome!!! I always try to watch an episode like once a week for like the past year and half or so. (sometimes I miss some but thankfully on the internet if you miss an episode all you have to do is find it lol) It’s a good show. I liked GX better [that’s just me though and sadly most fans seem to not like it :(]. But I love the “Riding Duel, Acceleration!!!” XD But I’m not above joking about it either lol But I still love the show reminds me of my childhood waking up on Saturdays and watching the Yu-Gi-Oh DM show.

        • PrinceHeir

same2, actually it brings alot of memories too and i also can’t believe iv’e been watching the anime 2 years now(3 when it comes to april but it seems they’re finishing it due to the new one coming out called zexal which i don’t like)

well you can watch the show as long as you know where you looking for. but if you want streaming site’s

ehh i kinda don’t like GX since the 1st few episodes seems a drag on. but i heard it got better in season 3 or so. so yeah i might watch it again though.

have also heard Cardfight Vanguard? seems cool enough for me ^^

what i like is things like Accel Synchro and Jack’s Burning Soul. seems one of kamen riders who gain absolute power or so XD

well it’s good to see some people still enjoying these shows. i just hope this show is much closer to the original rather than the western version. i mean really Ash? that should be Satoshi. it just doesn’t make any sense.

          • Zero_Destiny

GX gets WAY better. I also love how it’s based on Scientology it makes it weird and fun to watch. DM = Ancient Egypt, 5D’s = Nazca lines, and GX = Scientology? You can not make this stuff up!!! But yeah Parallel Worlds, Light of Destruction, Reincarnation as/from Aliens(or in this case Duel Monsters), that’s all from Scientology XD!!! Also love Jaden(Judai)’s deck it’s all about fusions that’s how he wins all his duels!!! Plus I have a bit of Man Crush on Judai/Jaden’s seriyu KENN. lol I can’t help it, I love that man’s voice XD Season 3 is a complete Mind F**K were all the main chara’s are slowly killed off and it’s all Jaden(Judai)’s fault and he goes mad and becomes the Supreme King and is evil for a while. It’s great XD!!!

          • PrinceHeir

            wow that’s seems cool :D

i guess i’ll definitely check it out :P

          • Zero_Destiny

Just found the Zexal wiki eehh. Do NOT like the chara designs doesn’t look Yu-Gi-Oh-ish enough to me seems more digimon or beyblade looking (not saying that those are bad series though). The plot descriptions seem interesting but I will miss the motorcycles, hope the main chara will come up with a good catch phase XD. It’ll be hard to top “Gotcha!!!” or “Riding Duel, Acceleration!!!” but I have confidence in Japan’s ability to make catchy and awesome ENGRISH catchphrases lol. (points down to my previous comment, plz look lol) If you get around to checking out GX I think it’ll be rewarding, and if you don’t like all the filler at the beginning just skip half way thru season 1, the opening even changes (even though the season doesn’t) which is basically the writers saying SEE our show has a plot. lol

          • PrinceHeir

well will see, yeah i’ll definitely miss 5D’s

do you still buy the TCG? have you also played the video games?

my favorite os probably Duelist of the Roses since it’s very different from the usual card game(more of a chess game)

          • Zero_Destiny

I haven’t played the card game in a LONG time :( I still remember all the rules (b/c official rules are diff than the show) and really loved the game. But I gave away all my cards to my younger cousins like four or five years ago when I moved (dumb me T_T). It’s kind of sad when I think about it because I had four pieces of Exodia and the Red Eyes Black Dragon (and not the one from the tins or the Starter Decks but one I really got from a pack). I used to play a burn deck because let’s face it burn decks in Yu-Gi-Oh are the best ways to win XD!!! I haven’t checked out a lot of the newer games but from time to time I pop in my old GBA games of Yu-Gi-Oh and play’em. lol I think my fav of the games would have to be Yu-Gi-Oh! The Sacred Cards or Yu-Gi-Oh! Reshef of Destruction because they’re a lot like Pokemon where your little avatar walks around and duels people. Then there’s Yu-Gi-Oh! Dungeon Dice Monsters as well because it was unique and pretty fun to play. I’ve been trying to hunt down Yu-Gi-Oh! Nightmare Troubadour for the DS because from what I’ve seen of it, it looks pretty fun :)!!!

          • I hate to jump in mid conversation, but Nightmare Troubadour was awesome. I loved how it followed perhaps a lot of the story from the show and was a suspenseful game. It was also actually difficult and some of the dueling conditions for the story fights really got me into having to need multiple decks.

I like the PSP Tag Force games though, I guess I just like the focus on having lots of characters to duel and the most number of cards. I hope they continue releasing it.

          • Zero_Destiny

@Sawada Tsuna Yeah I did hear Yu-Gi-Oh! Nightmare Troubadour was great game. X( Now I’m even more mad at myself for missing my chance to buy it when it came out. Looked super fun and pretty for a DS game must of been dumb when it came out because it completely fell off my radar the Tag Force games are the same too but at least I have an excuse for missing those (I didn’t get a PSP until like May 2010 lol) but man I had a DS at launch and still missed Yu-Gi-Oh! Nightmare Troubadour. That was dumb of me.

  • AaqibRawat

    woah im intrested
seems like they are trying to win back the affection of old school fans from the red blue green days !
    im in !

  • After all this time i must say i will miss Ash if he loses the spotlight soon, and this one takes his place in the anime on da next season (dont think it might happen though), but at least i hope this protagonist wont stay eternally at one age

    • BadenBadenPrinny

He’s been around for too long as it is

    • Pichi

Sadly, I think the anime producers are too scared to ever have extreme changes in the anime. Ash and Pikachu are their “trump” card, something that they can fall on if the other things in the anime doesn’t excite the audience. So we’ll always see Ash and Pikachu for a very long time.

    • Exkaiser

I’d miss him if Ash was even half the pokemon trainer that Red was.

But then, Pokemon Special is quite a ways better than the anime overall, so maybe that’s not fair.

      • I wouldnt miss him as a trainer though, he sucks >_> but well, he has his “charm” for a way to put it, at least pokemon’s anime was good for a good while, now, its just weird…

I realized this thanks to a friend, he said there was an episode where Ash celebrates the 1 year anniversary since he got pikachu… and he is still 10-13 years old lol, ah but that is not my main problem, my main problem is that it seems like Ash never gets any better lol -.-

        • M’iau M’iaut

Brock’s main problem was that he never got any.

          • He did have a GF for a while. But he doesn’t like to talk about her…

          • Yeah i remember that lol, did he even said why he left her? i remember he never talked about it, and i cant remember if he ever said the reason…

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Ash wasn’t the protagonist in the manga. It was Red, and then Gold, and then Ruby, and then Platinum, and now Black. Seriously, those were their names

      • Haha, now i see why those were the default names in pokemon games. And when did i say Ash was the protagonist in the manga? o.o I was talking about the anime, i would really like to see some new stuff in pokemon’s anime, not just Ash losing every 10 , barely winning, and giving away pokemon

        • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

You brought up how you’d miss him if he lost his spotlight, but why would he lose his spotlight? He was never in the manga and the manga characters never took over the show before, so why would you worry about him losing this spotlight?

          • Could you read what i said again? :P I clearly said

“(…)will miss Ash if he loses the spotlight soon, and this one takes his place in the anime on da next season(…)”

          • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Yes, and there’s no reason for you to think that because so many protagonists have come and gone in the manga and ash has always remained. It’s not like he originated in the manga and then jumped to the anime, so you shouldn’t think that any other character would take his place in that manner.

          • And that is why i put that parenthesis after that sentence xD

“(dont think it might happen though)”

          • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

That’s posting a comment saying “I’d be sad if lightning shot out of my fingertips and shot my mom in the face.” on an article about tesla coils. You need to keep things both possible and relevant.

          • Uh? I just pointed out a possibility, it could happen, and IF it happens, i would miss Ash (and etc). But i don’t think it might happen anyway, of course, this doesnt means there doesn’t exist a possibility that it might happen. So i just pointed out that possibility, and what would happen if it happens… o-o

          • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

But pointing out “possibilities” that have a less than 1% chance of happening, with no precedence at all, is considered irrelevant.

          • I know, i never said it was relevant, im just saying you just repeated all i said in my first post

  • Eh, personally the show was dead to me when Misty Left. So much UST that never went anywhere. *sigh*

    • GamerKT

They were younger than 13, man…

      • Your point being…? I’m not saying they needed to do it, but there was obviously something there. Some closure would’ve been nice, is all.

        • Zero_Destiny

No no no because now Ash is a PLAYA something Brock never succeeded at being. Think about it, a new girl every season or so *wink**wink* Ash you DA man!!! lol

  • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

If you actually read the manga, even as early as Generation 1, it’s pretty adult already. Pokemon actually die in the series. I remember seeing a Charmeleon cut through an Arbok’s head

    • The Arbok was technically already dead, it was in Saffron tower.

  • The main protagonist looks badass.

  • glemtvapen

Maybe we’ll see a predator and prey scenario, where a Charizard devours a Pikachu. No? Too mature?

  • Xien12

You know, there was a Pokemon manga a while back that was pretty mature. I forgot what it was called, but it was pretty awesome.

  • Zero_Destiny

I’ve recently started picking up the Pokemon manga that Viz has been releasing here in the USA, so I’m pretty excited about it. I know it’s silly to read Pokemon manga at my age (and I’m not even a Pokemanic either). I guess I just like reading things from my childhood a lot now (which is why I probably been snatching up all the Dragon Ball and Yu-Gi-Oh Mangas I can find. XD

    • Well they arent rereleasing anymore because they passed where they had abandoned the series early in the last decade, which is awesome. I love how the characters are portrayed in it, like Giovanni, RedxGreen, and GoldxSilver are memorable, Yellow was decent, but the plot in all of them are so amazing.

The plot is everything the games should have been. Its far more memorable, suspenseful, and exciting.

Oh, Ive been getting the Yugioh GX Manga (I like GX the best, Jaden and Chazz are so awesome), and I just started 5D’s last month since its in monthly shonen jump. Does the original Yugioh emulate the same story as the manga?

      • Zero_Destiny

The original Yu-Gi-Oh manga is epically dark they don’t even play DM until a volume or two in. It’s awesome how the Pharaoh is just pure evil when the manga starts. Basically early Yu-Gi-Oh=Someone hurts little Yugi then Pharaoh awakens messes with the bullies and challenges them to games (not just card games) the bullies loses and is tormented and tortured by Pharaoh!!! XD I haven’t checked out the 5D’s manga yet waiting on the volumes but the show is epic and pretty dark too (not as dark as the original Yu-Gi-Oh was at it’s start though) as long as you can get past CARD GAMES ON MOTORCYCLES you should really like 5D’s. Also GX is still my fav Yu-Gi-Oh and Chazz (Manjome)+ Jaden(Judai) = WIN!!! 3rd season of that show was also a real Mind F**K and it got pretty Dark. The Mangas for 5D’s and GX are different from the shows though and I only have two or three volumes of GX manga so far so I can’t really get into how different. But on surface it’s the same general set-up and charas but the manga-ka does whatever he wants story wise and besides some signature cards the chara’s decks are different too.

        • Ive been playing the tag force games which I guess modifies the story of 5D’s, (no motorcycles) but I need more chapters in the manga to come as the chapter I read just involved the fast paced awesome dueling, and I guess racing, and the second chapter I guess involves more. I like the potential it has though.

          • Zero_Destiny

If it turns out like the show it should be good, also edited my comment not sure if you saw it, basically said no mangas are different from anime story-wise. lol

  • joesz

The manga “Ash and Pikachu”.It’s solely based on the Johnt region and some of Hoenn:)

    • Zero_Destiny

Oh cool, I didn’t read that one growing up lol. Sounds interesting. Thanks for the replay.

  • tubers

Will the protagonist finally get a real romantic relationship?

Will they finally reveal how exactly Pokemon predates and mates?

Stay tuned for the Pokemon Tween Edition xD

  • Huh..Pokemon trying to revive itself…Possibly back to its old golden days huh?
Well honestly, I can’t say that I’m not interested. I haven’t been into pokemon since Pokemon Gold/Silver. And I haven’t read the pokemon manga either, well I read the first few chapters up to Ash’s second match against Brock but that was it. And the last Pokemon anime episode I saw was…Mm…Can’t remember. It was so long ago.

I look forward to this new series, and knowing that its going upon a much more mature path only sparks my interest more. Who knows, this might get me back into pokemon again.

  • countupyoursins

I hope Batman is finally in it.

This is so exciting! This is just what I need to convince people I’m not a man-child for liking Pokemon.

  • puchinri

So those oddly graphic manga with the Pokemon dying violently wasn’t aimed specifially at children…? I am at a loss for words. ouo’

The protag looks cool, so I’ll probably try and follow it.

  • two things that to me would spice up the pokemon games.
#1: battles happen on the field instead of a cut-scene.
#2: Allow for some choices by the player! wanna join team rocket?(or what ever it may be now) then take a test to get in to it.

both of thous could open up some inventive ways to play. as of right now, pokemon feels a little to linear then most games. some verities would be great.

(note, I’m still a fan of pokemon. last one played all the way threw was emerald.

  • Detective Conan STILL ongoing. Oh man that’s going to be a huge catch-up session for me.

I hope this means they make Pokemon manga more violent (maybe chaotic is a better word?) and dark. Not talking about deaths or TnA but I don’t want it to be sugary cute as well.

  • good stuff.
