Nintendo’s 3DS eShop Launches In May, Has DSiWare Transfer Feature

By Ishaan . January 28, 2011 . 12:29pm

There’s been a considerable amount of confusion regarding just when Nintendo’s 3DS eShop will be going live. Nintendo of Europe said the service would be available at launch, while Nintendo of America stated it wouldn’t. Luckily, Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, has cleared the issue up.

Speaking to investors at a recent financial results briefing for Nintendo’s third quarter, Iwata revealed that the 3DS eShop will go live around the world in late May, which is when the Nintendo 3DS firmware will receive its first update.

In addition to granting access to the eShop, the update will allow Nintendo 3DS owners to download a free web browser and the ability to transfer DSiWare titles over from their Nintendo DSi systems. This feature will be made possible via the eShop in some manner.

Additionally, Iwata also mentioned a second firmware update in the future will enable transfer of downloaded software between two 3DS systems, in case you happen to purchase a second system down the line. The number of transfers you can perform will be limited in some fashion, however.

Regarding the eShop itself, Iwata emphasized the importance of an accessible user interface. Since the Wii Shop Channel and Nintendo DSi Shop are based on Internet browser technology, Iwata feels they are both slow and not easy to use. With this in mind, the 3DS eShop will see a significant redesign to ensure digital content does not go unnoticed. In addition to to the aforementioned content, the eShop will also have game videos and demos up for download.

In addition to the 3DS Virtual Console, DSiWare games and downloadable 3DS games, the eShop will also include “3D Classics” for purchase. These were previously demonstrated at E3 2010 in the form of NES games with stereoscopic 3D effects added to them.

Read: no transfer if you are trading your system back.

This is just one of many reasons why an unified account system, like XBL or PSN, would be a whole lot better.

    • puchinri

Even the PSN isn’t perfect to me. But my gripe with the system is personal and minor.

But that would be inconvenient, and I can’t really think of a way around it. Maybe they’ll address it at a later point.

The browser is considered something that has to be “attained” in the eshop? Why not just included it on the system then, it makes more sense than withholding it from Japanese consumers from February and consumers in the Western world over a month…

Can’t way to play my note pad on my 3ds!

  • http://twitter.com/nikochanr3 niko

Do people actually browse the net on these things? Or is it just something people use to rag on the system?

    • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

I think its there just for the sake of having it and, dsi, it was nice to be able to go on the net and use a stylus, check facebook etc. If a browser were absence, well I think there would be more desire to rag on the system.

Wait for the 3DS compatible pr0n sites to start popping up.

It came in handy for me when the PCs were acting up, but the wi-fi was still working and I needed to check my registration for classes.
      That was it, though.

With the low resolution, browsing on DS is pretty bad so I don’t use it often.

However, when I was playing the game, Masou Kishin The Lord of Elemental , I did need to browse the net on DSiXL (to check route split, etc).

It is actually pretty handy when you need the walkthrough and you are not near a PC.

The only thing that annoyed me back then was constantly restarting the DS to switch between game and browser. It looks like there won’t be such an issue with the 3DS.

      • Joanna

I agree. I use the ipod to browse when I don’t feel like sitting in front of the PC, so I can see doing the same with the 3DS, especially to look something up. Thank god you don’t have to restart the system…I can imagine how annoying it would be.

    • Jellybit

I ADORE the browser on my iPod Touch. It’s such a nice experience, and great for most of my blog reading. It’s really convenient to just browse a bit on something you keep in your pocket, even when sitting at the couch watching TV, or taking a break at work. However, the touch controls were a big part of why the iPod Touch’s browsing worked so well. I hope this one is decent.

The single most important use of the browser will be to log into public wifi that requires a browser to accept the terms of service agreement. Now on the DSi this didn’t do any good because the connection was only for the browser – as soon as you left it in order to start up a WiFi internet game, the connection was broken. I presume that the 3DS’s multitasking browser will make this possible, but I’m not really 100% positive thinking about it. I wouldn’t be surprised if they blew it.

Transferring downloaded software to another 3DS will be very handy for when the inevitable hardware revision is released. I’m still hoping they’ll add GBA to the virtual console eventually. It has such a huge library of great games that would be awesome to revisit in Virtual Console form. I wonder how multiplayer will be handled with VC on the 3DS. Will they make VC games capable of using local wireless for their multiplayer or will they just disable multiplayer components. It’d better not be the second one. -_-

    • PrinceHeir

      this ^^

GBC and GBA games on Virtual Console please :P

i wonder if you can also transfer files and saves on another NGP Sony?

      • vadde939

GBC games have already been confirmed for virtual console it isn’t only for the spinach-green GB games. The GBA has so many more awesome games than the GB and GBC though which is why I really hope they add it to the VC at some point.

        • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

I wonder what the pricing scheme will be for the GB and GBC games, I wonder if Nintendo will charge 7-10 for them, or more.

      • Zero_Destiny

GBA better be added soon enough. Also needs Neo-Geo Pocket/Color, Atari Lynx,Game Gear, Wonderswan/color/crystal, and cell phone/ipad-ish thing games.

        • PrinceHeir

im not familiar with Neo Geo but i heards tons of great SNK games there :P

          • Zero_Destiny

Great system but more expansive than anything out there lol, but I was talking about the NEO-GEO Pocket. SNK’s answer to the GameBoy. Also a great little portable system it also actually has a better joystick than the PSP :P

      • PrinceHeir

yeah, i want to play some Castlevania games :P

      • http://www.pixelcustard.com/ cjschris

        The PSP can, can’t it?
But then, trophies may stop it….like they did for PS3

        • PrinceHeir

some saves can be copied but cannot be played on other systems, an example is Tekken 5 Dark Ressurection since it has a ghost data. i wonder if Phantasty Star Portable 2 Infinity and God Eater Burst can be copied as well since they have a ghost system on it.

      • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

You can already transfer files and saves between ps3s, and on psps. Though with the PSP2/NGP going the cloud based route for connectivity between console and portable…I imagine that you would be able to and just have to log into your psn account on another NGP unit.

        • PrinceHeir

i know that but some games can’t still be transfer, i just tried transferring Star Ocean TLH and Demon Souls saves on my PSP, it always says it cannot be transferred.

actually i already like the idea of just signing you account just to access your saves, that way it stays with you forever as long as you delete them(similar to download games and add ons)

there is a rumor that PS3 will be receiving a cloud based system in the next firmware

          http://scrawlfx.com/2011/01/cloud-storage-coming-to-playstation-3

sucks it’s only Playstation Plus Subscribers :(

  • Caligula

If they release Pokemon Snap as a 3D classic, my life would be complete. I doubt it’ll happen, but I can hope.

    • Zero_Destiny

Isn’t it on the Wii’s VC?

      • Caligula

Oh, is it? I never use my Wii, so… I guess I should actually bother checking the VC before saying things like that :’D

  • justmemark

I’m still confused about the choice of releasing the eShop in late May. :|

  • Joanna

    3D Classics?! Yes please!

I’ve been wanting to play these games on the go, so this only further cements my decision to go with a 3DS this gen.

There are quite a few classics I still haven’t tried (on NES) and want to try if the price is right (5 or less).
