Dark Souls Trailer Looks A Lot More Colourful Than Its Name [Update]

By Ishaan . February 2, 2011 . 12:33pm

Earlier in the week, we finally heard details on Dark Souls, From Software’s spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls, published in 2009.  Unlike Demon’s Souls, which was published in the U.S. by Atlus, Dark Souls is being published by Namco Bandai, as part of an ongoing partnership with From Software.

Story-wise, Dark Souls is completely original. As with its predecessor, From are aiming for a high level of difficulty and intend for the player to learn from his mistakes. Dark Souls is currently slated for a holiday 2011 release worldwide. You can watch the game’s debut trailer above and find more details on the game here.

Update: Screenshots added.

  • Lovely so how soon can I pre-order. I am actually looking forward to die in a more brutal way. I loved how the rhino beast just hit the guy from the back like that it was awesome.

  • I love how there was a whole bunch of epic fight scenes, and then a scene where he climbs a ladder, followed by more epic fight scenes.

CLIMBING LADDERS. AWESOME! Seriously though, the environments look quite snazzy.

  • The trailer is so bad-ass.

  • GOTY confirmed

@1:40 it reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus where you jump and lung the enemy on the head.

cannot wait for this. though i want Demon Souls 2 this will be enough for the main course :P

    • this is Demon Souls 2

      • PrinceHeir

        um no

first of all the director and producer of Demon Souls(From Sony Japan) are not working with this. this is just From Software themselves. not to mention this is pretty much based on Demon Souls(Demon Souls itself is based on Kings Field which is a early From Software game) it’s kinda like The 3rd Birthday except it has completely no relation watsoever to demon souls other than it’s idea and premise.

if this was Demon Souls 2 we probably would have seen tons of new classes(which they removed completely), a more darker tone, and a higher difficulty level which the latter is already being implied. why would they name it Dark Souls instead of Demon Souls 2? it’s because they wanted it to be multiplatform.

im already excited for this game, though if Sony continues to use the Demon Souls IP(which they will eventually) then more games for us(at least for PS3 owners)

more and ferocious monsters and a seeminglessly open world? count me in :D

        • k keep telling yourself that, I’ll have fun playing Demon Souls 2 while you’re still waiting for it

          • alastor3

Prince is right, it’s not demon souls 2, they even said it, it’s a spiritual successor, since the ip of Demon Souls is with Sony, so technicaly it’s not demon souls 2 but it’s like the same.

          • eh, sure sony has the IP but this looks and sounds like a sequel to Demons Souls in every single way except name so I don’t get all of the requests for a “real” Demons Soul sequel. This is totally filling that void and if it achieves the sales success that it deserves no doubt the next game this team makes will be called Dark Souls 2 rather than Demon Souls 2

          • Zefux

How does typing that make you feel any happy? I mean, c’mon.

          • PrinceHeir

lol who says i won’t be getting this game?

and what’s wrong with looking forward to Demon Souls 2? that way we can experience both games.

heck im glad this is multiplatform since it’s unlikely that Demon Souls 2(if they plan to) will be multiplatform due to sony and such.

it seems you just don’t want to give Sony Japan any credit watsoever. oh well we have our reasons.

hell im sure they are already planning on Making Dark Souls 2. the concept and idea itself is just pain good :D

          • I think you’re giving Sony Japan too much credit. Sure, they might have had an influence, but what makes you assume that it was a positive influence? According to the GAF thread about this game, Sony tried to dumb down the game to make it appeal to a casual audience – it’s only as hard as it is because From refused to give in.

          • PrinceHeir

umm im just giving both developers credit. it seems whenever Demon Souls is mentioned most people would think From Software did all the work.

never heard of that? oh well it seems From Software made the right choice ^^
actually i only known them through Armored Core and the Tenchu series.

it seems they also made other awesome franchises like ACE Another Century, Ninja Blade and 3D Dot Heroes. so yeah support From Software.

we need a new Tenchu game and please localize Ace Another Century PS3 please Namco :)

Holiday 2011 is a lo-o-ong way off. Hopefully they mean Easter or one of the many Japanese holidays between now and Turkey Day o_0

  • WonderSteve

I hope they fix the co-op

  • Hraesvelgr

Holiday 2011? Well, that’s a great time to release it, no big name hype titles being released around that time of year. Nope.

  • Hexen

    Sticky White Stuff…

  • badmoogle

This is one of the few times Tsunayoshi Sawada’s usual comment applies so well:”Day 1 baby, day 1!!!”:)

    • KyoyaHibari

LOL yea man im getting this on Day 1 for sure

  • thebanditking

Looks great so far, though I can’t help but wonder if there is going to be a Demon Sould 2 on top of this release. I remember From Software or Sony hinting at that a few months back. Demon Souls proved fairly popular for Atlus, enough for Sony to take notice and regret not bringing it. So it seems logical but this looks so similar that I wonder if they could find a way to differentiate the two.

    1 word: ORGASMIC

So I peed my pants in excitement…

Actually I didn’t. But metaphorically I did. Thank goodness for proper bladder control.

  • Totally getting this, jour un. But I hope they come out with a Deluxe Edition that’s at least as good as what Atlus did. The guide was SO useful!

  • Zefux

    I want this. So much.

I think I’m turning into a masochist thanks to this game. I love getting slapped everywhere and grassing my HP back.

  • Kai2591

    So much…EVIL.

  • Should I still play the first one? I forgot when they said the servers would shut down. Though playing on your own, cut off from any help would be cool in its own way lol.

  • This looks like an overall upgrade from Demon’s Souls, aside from the music that is, despite that I’m looking forward for this!
