Creating Fatalities For Mortal Kombat

Ever wondered how the Mortal Kombat development team comes up with ideas for the grotesque Fatalities the series is known for, or how they illustrate them? The answer’s simple than you think.

NetherRealm Studios’ Director of Art, Steve Beran, writes on the PlayStation blog that the process simply involves locking a bunch of team members into a room for Fatality meetings. The designers then come up with ideas for Fatalities that they act out for each other, and the ones that draw the strongest reactions are chosen for being put into the game.

Mortal Kombat co-creator, Ed Boon, then creates simple concept images using stick figures for each Fatality, which are used as reference by the motion capture studio. Here’s a look:

Beran says that, while Fatalities were only added at a fairly late stage during the development of previous Mortal Kombats, for the upcoming game, the team began working on Fatalities early on in the development cycle.

  • Wow lol, I literally LOL’d in class at the part about holding Fatality meetings. The game is unfortunately too gorey for my tastes.

    • Gorey #MORTALKOMBAT is a callback to days of yore.

      “TOASTY!” “3D!”

  • MisterDandylion

MAJOR LOL at how at the stickmen! They rock! :D. I would like to play mainly because it fulfills my darkest fantasy of breaking my opponent’s bones MUAHAHAHA

Seriously I’m looking forward to this game’ storyline and gameplay…

    Best meetings ever

Future meetings will attempt to improve output by providing actual weapons in order to kick start a few ideas.

    • Maybe we’ll see Ed Boon walk out on stage at GDC this year with one of his eyeballs dangling from its socket.

  • Kunio_kun

So no more ‘Friendships’ or lame-ass ‘Babalities?’ I’m glad they’re scaling back the nonsense, though… I was afraid we’d be seeing ‘Bestialities’ in future editions…

  • No9

Must say more interested in this game than any other Mortal Kombat in recent times.

  • PrinceHeir

    no brutality? :D

  • Wow impressive, I like how Ed Boon illustrates concepts to be later used in the games, makes me excited to fully experience MK in entirety. MK FFTW!^_^
