Two Tales Of Xillia Resonance Artes Slice Through Enemies

By Spencer . February 25, 2011 . 2:55am

On top of chaining basic attacks with party members, Tales of Xillia lets players combine artes. The resonance artes system links techniques resulting in more powerful attacks.

For example, Jude can link his Demon Fist attack, a skill that creates a shockwave of energy on the ground, with Milla’s Wind Lance, a piercing wind spear. Linking these two attacks creates the Severing Wind Blade (note: attack names are loose translations and are not final in any way), a cross wind blade that flies in a straight line.

Milla’s fireball spirit magic can be linked to Alvin’s Tearing Tiger Fang, a two hit killing strike. This combination yields the Crimson Sword, a blazing sword strike that ends with an explosion.

Namco Bandai also released screenshots of Leia Roland, who was announced most recently, using her staff in battle.

  • C’mon Jude… move your elbow.

Also, “Demon Fist” is an officially localized arte name… so I would assume any translations are pretty damn accurate.

  • KotaroInugami

How much do you wanna bet that one of Leia’s weapons is the monkey king staff? Maybe the gag one, but her weapon none the less.

    • Zero_Destiny

Grow Longer Nyoi-Bo!!!!!!! Magic Son Goku commands it of you!!!! :)

  • Dimentionalist

I wish Leia would wield my staff in battle…

    • IceRomancer

Ha! I see what you did there!

  • karasuKumo

Good idea! The game looks gorgeous ^^

  • Demon Fist?! What happened to Demon Fang?! Anyway, can I just say that Jude is perhaps their best designed character since Reid Herschel for a Tales game? Just look at how cool Jude looks, simply stunning!

I wonder, if they do continue to include costumes, how these attacks will look with those costumes on, I cant wait.

    • Pesmerga00

Demon Fang is a sword move. Demon Fist is a, well fist move.

    • Guest

      you’re always mangazing

      • Ren

Aren’t all we? After all I don’t think we live in a women only world. Our sights are going to fall on men from time to time, it’s just that most men are really uncomfortable with it.

      • Who else is there to see? I just see the stunning Jude!!!!

        • SolidusSnake

Damn straight. Can’t wait for some yaoi doujinshi of him.

    • Ren

It’s Tales and it’s on 3D, worrying about costumes should be the least of your worries.

      • I just wanna see my characters in Code Geass outfits again and, of course, their beach clothing ^_^

        • Ren

Don’t hold too much hope for the Code Geass ones. Cameo costumes were never repeated before, and they already appeared on Graces. They’ll probably find another series to get costumes from.

    • Demon Fist has been used before as a name in Tales of Legendia. Senel fought in a martial art style, so he used Demon Fist, while Chloe, the Sword user, used Demon Fang. Luke also used Demon Fist while Guy used Demon Fang in Tales of the Abyss (though Luke uses swords in this case). My guess is that since Jude uses martial arts, that’s why he’s using Demon Fist. Either way its the same move.

      • Luke uses his fist when he uses Majinken.

    • 魔神剣 = Demon Sword (Localized as Demon Fang. Reid’s Sonic Blade is this too btw.)
      魔神拳 = Demon Fist
      魔神犬 = Demon Dog

All three are pronouced Majinken. (Yes, even the dog one. I’m not the best person to explain why though.)

      • Because them moonrunes be crazy. Explanation enough.

  • Damn man.., stupid annoying guy always unintentionally blocking the view to heaven…that’s just not cool…>_<

    • … She’s 15… Though I guess that fact wouldn’t stop most people from wanting to get rid of that elbow.

      • Zero_Destiny

15!!! That’s like 28 in anime years! lol

        • … Then what’s 20? That’s how old Milla is. Jude is also 15, btw. Slim chances in a romance between the two because most (I think) Tales romances happen between two people who are at most a year or two apart in age.

          • Zero_Destiny

20 = 5 or 6 years away from being put in a retirement home Zing I’m on FIRE today baby. lol *pats myself on the back* lol I googled some charas from TALES because I could of swore that you were wrong but I was in fact wrong darn. :( Another better romance thrown aside. It’s like Legendia all over again.

      • 15…You just made it even more unbearable that Jude’s elbow is in the way.>_<

        • I knew that would be your reaction to that information.

Edit: There’s nothing to see anyways since she’s “wearing black shorts.”

          • She’s wearing spats? Now *I* want that elbow gone.

          • Zero_Destiny

lol Why did your comment make me think of that episode of Mayoi Neko Overrun! where the charas fight over whether or not girls should where spats or bloomers at the sports fest? XD

          • Honestly, I can’t tell if they’re spats or the mysterious black void underneath the skirts of video game characters that wear them.

          • Such trivial things never stopped me before. :P

    • I wouldn’t say that to Lelouch…

      • Lelouch or not, no one should dare to stand in my way, when I have the chance to take a look at the delicious Gate to heaven!! ZA POWA!

  • MisterDandylion

Just an elbow away from eternal glory! xD

  • Just an fyi for those who are curious, Severing Wind Blade’s localized name is Final Gale and Crimson Sword’s is Hell Pyre. That is if they are indeed 絶風刃 and 紅蓮剣 respectively.

    • Severing Wind Blade is way cooler than Final Gale, in literal meaning and word count :(

      • I agree. It feels like they went with that name just because it’s the last attack Yuri learns. (Besides it’s altered version.)

Edit: There’s also the fact that there already is an attack localized as Severing Wind. 断空剣(Dankuuken) is literally translated into well… (something to do with interrupting or severing) Void Sword and is a wind elemental attack. There are a couple of other moves that deal with cutting air to create a vacuum. Tales Studio seems to be fond of having their characters cut the air to create vacuums in as many ways as possible.

  • irzbos

Is it bad that I will prolly buy Tales of Graces even thought I don’t really care for it because I want Tales of xillia to be brought over?

    • Zero_Destiny

No it makes you my idol :)

    • HarryHodd

You’ll be cool and happy in the end because Graces f is a great game.

    • No, it’s good. Graces f isn’t that good, but it will tide you over. So you won’t quite be gambling money on the chance that you will win the chance to spend more money.

    • puchinri

I’m looking at it the same way, but I’m going to pretend that it isn’t bad, whether or not it is.

    • PrinceHeir

well the more Tales the better :P

    • Nope. Nothing bad about that at all.

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Action! Slash! Colors! Jump! Explode! Kill!
…Oh hey look at this serene shot of Jude running down a cobblestone street with the full moon and starry sky.

    • puchinri

Hah! That was random… Pleasant looking, but random. But I also have a deep love for scenery and townscapes, so I wasn’t complaining.

  • Croix

Dangit NamcoBandai, I hope you localize this and TAKE MY MONEY. As they say, anyway.

Always been a huge fan of Tales, and glad to see that they aren’t changing the core of what makes their games so great.

  • Yukito

Look at the color….. look at the style….. Graces F better sell if we want this. This COULD be the best RPG for the PS3, and there is that chance we may never see it. Cmon F, sell, sell, sell!

    PS: Leia is cute.
PSS: The above line is true.
    PSSS: So wasn’t that one.

  • As long as they keep the arbitrary limitations in battle to a minimum (cough item thrower cough), we might just have the first good Team Symphonia game on our hands

  • Draparde

I think i’m love o_o. so far im so gonna kill everything as Leia XD but i am happy there is not a character im unintrested in so far

  • Quite a nice concept! A bold new, modification for the LMBS. The game looks gorgeous as well. Please, Namco, please localise this gem!

  • I can’t wait to not buy this game until the enhanced remake is released or they confirm that there won’t be an enhanced remake.

  • puchinri

I feel so mixed about the character designs the more I look at them. But I am interested in the characters themselves. More importantly, Leia’s outfit is bugging me… Is it a shirt and shorts? Psuedo-dress shirt and shorts? I’d almost guess it’s a onepiece/leotard thing going by her torso. Her boots don’t match either, as cute as they are. But I forgive the design. As long as she sticks to being the perky, moe one.

I really like the look of the world more and more too. Although when I actually look at that picture of Jude running, I feel like Edward Cullen came by, plastered himself to the sky and left behind all of his glitter.

The official site isn’t looking bad now either. The music is nice~.

  • puchinri

I stand corrected. Leia’s outfit is an open top with a one piece/leotard under it [too bad for everyone who got excited over panty/spat-sshots)]. I do like her outfit in the art though~.

    • Oh, so it is part of the outfit. It isn’t exactly a leotard either, btw, since leotards don’t cover any part of the legs. It’s closer to… a temple garment. Except temple garments go all the way down to the knees.

      • puchinri

Ah, good point. I guess it’s just some in-between piece…

I also notice the colors of the art are somewhat different from the game. Like they tried to brighten up parts of the outfits. I think that ended up making them clash while they worked well in the art. It’s interesting how the art is comparing to the models so far.

(Even my sexy Alvin doesn’t look quite the same in the game compared to the art…)

  • Souji Tendou

Resonance? Uh…. I think I’m having a deja vu here.

  • i will buy this game regardless any tales game is a good one i honestly think people need to stop having these expectations of how games should be just buy the game love it and done or dont and move on loool
