Capcom: The Future Is “Bright” For Monster Hunter Fans In The West

By Ishaan . February 28, 2011 . 3:29pm

In another recent episode of the company’s “Ask Capcom” series of video Q&As, Vice-president of Strategic Planning & Business Development, Christian Svensson, fielded a question on whether one could expect to see any Monster Hunter-related announcements from Capcom USA in the near future.

While Svensson didn’t give a direct reply to the question or allude to any Monster Hunter game in particular, he did say the future for Monster Hunter fans in the west is bright. His full quote is as follows:

“All I can say is, the future for Monster Hunter fans in the west will be bright, but just as there was  a sizeable gap between Freedom Unite and [Portable] 2nd, I think there’s going to be a little bit of a gap [following Monster Hunter Tri]. And exactly what form it takes, I can’t speak to — I have to unfortunately stay mum. But fear not, you guys have more goodness coming in the future.”

This is in no way a confirmation of if Monster Hunter Portable 3rd is or isn’t headed overseas, or what form it will take. Keep in mind that Portable 3rd will also be made available on Sony’s NGP in some form, although details on this front are unclear.

Capcom have also recently alluded to the possibility of expanding the Monster Hunter franchise to the Nintendo 3DS. The last Monster Hunter game to be released outside Japan was Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii.

“Posting at the official Capcom Unity forums, Capcom US vice-president of Strategic Planning & Business Development Christian Svensson has stated that while he’d love to release Monster Hunter Freedom 3, the low rate of PSP ownership in the west means it simply wouldn’t be worth the time, money, and effort. ”

That was the last time Svenson, was asked about portable 3rd. This is the same news as the last time, only delivered in a positive note.

It’s not “low ownership” but the amount of piracy the handheld gets, me thinks. The Monster Hunters seem to do pretty good here, as far as PSP games in the west go, but since there are many people that will actually BUY it vs pirating in Japan, it’s usually the other way around here, unfortunately…

Second set of buttocks Ive seen on Siliconera today… Also I hope they mean something else is coming, so much mystery isn’t worth it if its just an announcement for MHF3.

  • Barrit

Someone told me that a Gamestop employee told them we were going to get 3 in April, but I haven’t heard a thing about a localization, so I really doubted it. Sounds like we will still be waiting a while from this article.

  • Draparde

Hmm this makes me think we’re going to get something thats monster hunter, but not portable 3rd….or portable 3rd…but not how we expect….

  • renkun67

God I hope its Monster Hunter: Frontier

Ishaan! You’re on an assless chaps RAMPAGE!!!!!!!

    • eilegz

      sorry messed the reply

      @Robert Volciak

because somehow im still a capcom fan, and i really wish they start doing better games. or at least move foward and IMPROVE monster hunter.

  • Guest

If it’s P3rd I think they should just wait for the NA NGP launch. Confirmed better sales and you’ll reach more people. 3DS/NGP multiplat P3rd+ or something would be awesome.

  • badmoogle

I’m sure Capcom knows what this franchise needs in order to take off in the west.
    *Hint:it’s not a handheld,and it’s HD.*

And yes i know it’s a risk but i think it’s a risk worth taken.

    • PrinceHeir

would love a HD Monster Hunter game with Online across the world(ala Lost Planet)

can’t wait for the announcement. MHP3rd is already good enough for me :P

  • eilegz

again its so overrated, unless they improve the gameplay and the mobility of the game, i skip it. just for example looks how one of those named “monster hunter clone” like phantasy star portable improved a lot from the first game…

I can see where you’re coming from, but that’s just how Monster Hunter is defined. Fans got used to the gameplay and mobility. I don’t know what improvements you’re thinking of, but they might turn off some fans for various reasons. I can’t be sure if new fans would outweigh the loss of old fans because of the improvements, so who knows how would Capcom deal with the series based on gains and losses of consumers.

      • Draparde

i Couldn’t agree with you more.

      • Guest

They need to get rid of the stupid animations after using an item. I already know the argument diehard fans will make but I don’t agree with it at all. It’s really stupid.

        • karasuKumo

Agreed, the amount of times I have been hit directly after a potion still haunts me -_-

        • Cloud_ST

I’m a diehard fan but that is probably the only thing I really, really,REALLY hate about the game xD,the camera is just fine for me,but those animations…Ugh!.

I’m pretty tired of people referring to it as a clone of Monster Hunter when Phantasy Star has been an online franchise for a lot longer than Monster Hunter. Don’t even make the argument: “yeah, but Monster Hunter was on the PSP first and Phantasy Star obviously moved there after MH to copy it!” Bullshit. Phantasy Star has always been a popular series and the move to handhelds was inevitable.

Since your “monster hunter clone” is in quotes then I’m not sure whether you were stating that it is a clone, but then again I don’t really care. I’m just posting this because you mentioned it and I know that tons of people think that it’s true.

    • http://twitter.com/Burdmayn Robert Volciak

If you think Monster Hunter is overrated then why are you reading articles about it?

    • http://twitter.com/PafuPafu7 Kevin Lor

Phantasy Star Portable isnt even close to a monster clone! Its called hack n slash. Its like calling every other hack n slash game on the ps3 a god of war clone. If they improved the mobility on MH the game would be too easy. And for gameplay if you are looking for special skills attack its not gonna be in MH. you’re beter off playing phantasy star. From what I see MH is “you” living in this fantasy world with dinosaurs like monsters that you hunt as a regular person with no special magic or omnislash(although that would be awesome). Some things are better not change but i wouldnt mind if they did take out the animation after using a potion. Anywho MH and PSP are not the same.

  • HarryHodd

This has to be either for PSP or Xbox 360 since these are the only machines with new games not localized.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

      Not necessarily, no.

  • HarryHodd

Capcom has been so disappointing this gen for me I just won’t believe anything until I see it.

    • raymk

how have they been disappointing what were you looking from for from them may I ask.

      • HarryHodd

Something good out of their Japanese studios that’s not a fighter or Wii exclusive.

  • Code

rar, I keep thinking Monster Hunter Portable 3rd is still on the way for this summer, but I guess there hasn’t been an official announcement for it yet. I love my Monster Hunter but at the moment my hiatus from hasn’t gone unappreciated.

  • alundra311

I do hope they consider another MH for the Wii.

    • AQuatermain

That is also what I want: a Monster Hunter Tri G.

      • HarryHodd

Would love to see tri g on PSWii.

  • http://www.facebook.com/masteryoshi88 Katharine Bush

Capcom you tease! Not only you do this to my Monster Hunter, but Ace Attorney as well. You are worst then Squre Enix! Come on already!

  • Advent_Andaryu

All I want is Frontier on the 360 in America.

  • Cloud_ST

We’ll wait!,MH goodness for the PSP is well worth the wait.

  • MarkMario

    Monster Hunter… Meh ._.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6T2SUPFIAJ6SQDJKKG4C5SJNYE D

It’s a long shot but…. MH Frontier for the world!

  • karasuKumo

Whatever it is I’m happy :D MH is too cool.

Although I hope they aren’t just going to port 3rd to the NGP to hold off a proper MH NGP title. But if they added better textures and a couple of new monsters I wouldn’t mind as much, it would make a great bundle XD

  • http://twitter.com/gabriel_may_uk Gabriel May

I would like to see MH appear on the Xbox 360. Just relax the subscription fees that the Japanese have had to endure :D

  • http://twitter.com/korn555 Seth Cruz

If they dont bring a Monster Hunter to the main consoles, i’m going to stay with Dark Souls.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Nelhew Nelson Hew Weng Xin

What’s the point of HD when you can’t bloody go around playing with your friends in a field trip.

Monster Hunter should always be on a portable. NGP or 3DS. I don’t mind.

  • Ultimate_Tifa_Fan

    MH online plox.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ebgeer Eric Bradley Geer

This is the best news I’ve heard today…granted this article was posted a couple days ago…my hope is that it will be on…first and foremost PS3..but any of the handhelds…PSP, NGP or 3DS would be wonderful.

I just ordered MHP3rd from Japan..and will be enjoying it and Unite until this “bright future” shows its face…MH is probably one of my favorite IPs of all time.

Whoop! ! ! ..thanks Capcom for at least giving us some hope and something to look forward to.
