Yu Suzuki Talks Shenmue Town For Smartphones

By Ishaan . February 28, 2011 . 11:54pm

In an interview with Gamasutra at the Game Developers Conference, Shenmue creator, Yu Suzki, discussed plans for a possible port of his current project, Shenmue Town, to smart phones, including iOS devices, in the future.

Currently running on DeNA’s Mobage Town platform, Shenmue Town is a sidestory follow-up to the two-game Shenmue series that debuted on the Sega Dreamcast. A free-to-play game that makes its revenue off micro-transaction purchases, Shenmue Town takes place in the city of Yokosuka, which is where the original Shenmue played out.

“From the start, I’ve been thinking of this as a multiplatform game,” Suzuki told Gamasutra. “So I’m thinking about smartphone strategies right now.” Interestingly, Suzuki has done part of the coding work on Shenmue Town himself at his company, YS Net.

I would say, “Stop talking about Shenmue Town and tell me about Shenmue 3″, but that would be unfair and selfish of me.

They’re probably probing the world to see if it’s still interested in Shenmue, and if Shenmue Town doesn’t lift off – we will never see how it all ends. I haven’t lost hope yet.

I dunno. It depends on how much overlap exists between people who play these types of games in Japan and the people who would be attracted to a game like Shenmue. Mobage games sound an awful lot like those terrible Zynga facebook games that old people play.

That would make sense if it was for portable consoles. But i don’t play on mobile devices and I’m sure so do a lot of gamers, so how is this suppose to measure the interest?

Lets all support this so Yu Suzuki can get the funding for Shenmue 3 :D

I’ve been a fan of Yu Suzuki my whole life from the 80s’ OutRun, Space Harrier and Power Drift to his later games Virtua Cop and Shenmue. My fingers are crossed and wallet ready for Shenmue 3 (hey if Duke Nukem can make it back from the dead then I’m sure Ryo Hazuki will return)

Has any of these Japanese phone games been brought over to North America? I would love to try this game.

  • Phoenix_Apollo

I’d get a phone that can play this just to see Shenmue III happen.
