Devil Survivor Overclocked Has The Most Voiced Dialogue Of Any Atlus Game

By Ishaan . March 4, 2011 . 8:24am

Atlus’ enhanced port of Devil Survivor for the Nintendo 3DS, titled Devil Survivor Overclocked, adds voiced dialogue to the game and an eighth day at the end of the original seven day period over which the game plays out.

Devil Survivor Overclocked has 20,000 words worth of voiced dialogue. The game’s official site reveals that the first seven days of Devil Survivor take up 15,000, which means 1/4th of the voices are dedicated to the eighth day alone.

Surprisingly, this is apparently the highest amount of voiced dialogue in Atlus history. The development team is concerned that with so much recorded dialogue to accommodate, the game won’t fit onto the cartridge or that they won’t be done recording the voices in time.

Devil Survivor Overclocked is getting a mighty quick localization as well, voiced dialogue and all. Atlus USA have the game scheduled to release in Summer. You can find samples of the English voices over on the game’s U.S. website.

  • I hope they’re able to fit it all in there. I’d be a sad panda if they can’t, but I’ll still buy it regardless.

  • WOW ZOHMG Dude, they are truly delivering that which I want in a game!!!!! So much voice talent! Its gonna be epic!!! Day 1 Baby Day 1!!!!!!!!!

    • Hraesvelgr

The question is, are you buying a 3DS on day one?

      • idofgrahf

No, the question is can he FIND a 3ds on day one?

        • raymk

Well somebody has to get one on day one out of all the people buying it. He may be that luck number

      • Code

He already has it preordered, with Amazon wasn’t it?…

        Oh god OH GOD Tsuna factoids have bleeded into my long term memory xmx;;;

      • Of course Im getting it on day 1 baby!!!!!!!1 Will switch my preorder from Amazon to Gamestop so I can there!!!! Woot Woot

  • Wow is the main character really Hanatero (Atsuro)?! Thats pretty awesome, I love his voice in Bleach!!!! Yuzu sounds familiar.

    • Gonna sound great with a silent protagonist

      • Zero_Destiny

I can see a new trend in localization companies!!! They’ll hire big name celebrity Hollywood actors and make them the silent protagonist. Ingenious!!! Now you can slap their name on the game and only pay for like four lines of acting (all of them being grunts of course)!!!

        • Code

          You’d probably be really dishearted if you realize how true that actually is opo;

          • Zero_Destiny

Argh I hate when my sarcasm comes true!!!! lol

          • Code

Animation industry deals with this ALL the time opo; Getting big name actors to do voices even for the smallest parts because it’s a name they can face on the box, and can potentially bring more people in.

  • kyuketsukimiyu

It is getting hard to not want this game. I wasn’t going to buy it because there is nothing wrong with the original game…but the upped graphics and voice work tempt me so.

  • Zero_Destiny

I hope that doesn’t mean we get a line here or there of voiced dialogue and then EVERY THING is voiced for the eighth day. But yeah I’m liken this. More voices the better. Definitely sounds like the superior version of a good game (which I missed out on). So should be a blast. :)

    • Shadow_Raskolnik

Nope, the announcement email pretty much states that the game is fully voiced.

  • I can’t wait to play the undub!

    • Yui

Unusually enough, I have to agree with you here. :D
I listened to some of the samples, and they’re great voice actors, just not the way I imagined the voices at all. It’s so sad that now, whenever I think of Devil Survivor, I will hear those voices. XD

      EDIT: Oh god, Gigolo is Quinton Flynn. I’m not sure if this is a good thing. ;_;

      • Ren

Alha, a present for you: the drama cd introduction with translations. These are probably the seyuu that will appear on the game, although seeing it’s only a drama cd, they might actually change them for the 3DS release.

      • I am glad I never heard any of the English voice samples.

  • GamerKT

This is an RPG, right? How is it? I think it’s first-person view during combat, too. Does that get annoying at all? I might get this. Inform me?

    • idofgrahf

It is an rpg but it is not first person view in combat, more like a tactical rpg (tactics ogre, Final fantasy tactics).

      • GamerKT

I freaking love Final Fantasy Tactics. :D

    • Yui

To further compound on the explanation idofgrahf provides, it is both first-person, in a style reminiscent of the earlier dungeon crawler SMT games during the individual character combat sessions, and takes an overhead perspective outside of those combat sessions but while still on the battlefield. Idofgrahf provides excellent examples of the overhead perspective. :D

      • GamerKT

That sounds pretty friggin’ awesome. I guess I’ll get it. It’ll be my first SMT game.

        • Yui

You should! SMT games are great (and pretty damn challenging to boot) so I’m sure you’ll love it once you give it a shot. :D

  • Geez, Atlus sure does seem to have a pretty severe Messiah Complex…

  • Well, might as well get it. I loved it on the DS, but I can sell my DS copy of it.

  • lightningrook

I suspect that this has been brought up before, but I noticed that the Japanese site calls it SMT: Devil Survivor Overclock, as opposed to the NA site listing it as SMT: Devil Survivor Overclocked. Anyone know why there’s the difference?

    • It’s a grammar correction. There’s no deeper meaning behind it.

  • I dunno…..Catherine had a looooooooooooooottttt of voice work. Can’t accurately tell if its more or lest then 20,000 words but hmmm…..

  • Saru245

This game looks awsome.I hope its like the persona game in some way and i hope its not too difficult.I’ve played the Persona games(3 and 4) and I’m getting this game since it reminds me of the that series.I already pre-ordered the 3DS and this is probably going to be my first RPG on the 3DS.

  • Even more voice acting than Devil Summoner!? Impossible!

  • Saraneth

I really don’t like Atsuro’s voice. He sounds really whiney. I imagined him as being the smart one, but not a complete dork. I chose his route because it was the most reasonable. But the voice actor chosen for him mocks him for the level-headedness that sets him apart.

  • DDanny

Well, it’s nice to see the new 8th day is supposed to be huge, as I wouldn’t play the same game again (already did all routes) just for voices and some measly 20 demons.

  • Aiddon

Lessee if I can guess the voices:

    Izuna: Karen Strassmen

    Atsuro: Spike Spencer

Yuzu: Can’t really tell, but it sounds familiar

    Remiel: I ain’t got a clue

    • I wouldn’t mind betting that Michelle Ruff would be amongst the cast somewhere. That woman is a damn popular English VA for female characters.

      • Zero_Destiny

Not as popular as Laura Bailey lol
Skip to the Top 5 Overlooked games of 2010 to get the joke XD

        • Hah HA! Fair enough. Poor Miss Bailey.

        • Gosh. I’ve always had the suspicion that she doesn’t play the games she contributes to.

  • This is going to be so awesome!

  • Day one for me. This is the killer app RPG of the 3DS so far.

  • MarkMario

Kind of making me want a 3DS but still, I’ll wait until the end of the year.

  • PrinceHeir

awesome can’t wait for the new dialogue :)

  • Wait what?! There is an eighth day in the enhanced version?! Now I need a 3ds!!
…or I can just watch it on youtube….

  • Yesshua

Well, when Atlus announced this I said that they would have a tough sell. Since then they have announced that difficulty will be adjustable (which was desperately needed), they’ve released some good looking screens, and they’ve released some voice samples proving that the voice acting actually won’t be horrendous. Now this comes out, suggesting that the 8th day isn’t just some throwaway epilogue, but a very big deal worthy of experiencing.

Alright Atlus, you’re almost there. I just need one more little push to get me to make the jump and buy this. Any of the following would do the trick:

New and/or remastered music (the original could have used a few more tunes)

Save file transfer from the original cart

Cameo appearances from a game I like or in some way contributing to an overall SMT continuity

An opening movie that doesn’t suck

    Really good review scores

A cool online demon fusion/trading/download system (maybe kinda like Strange Journey?)

  • British release please… PLEASE! We didn’t get the normal version… :(

  • Never mind if it’s voiced, I’m still excited that there’s that much dialogue for the eighth day!

(I’d be even more excited if I could, y’know, play it, but I’m happy nonetheless.)
