Pokémon Black & White Break Series’ Debut Sales Record

By Ishaan . March 8, 2011 . 12:30pm

Pokémon Black/White released this past weekend to much excitement, and easily shot past the series’ first-day sales record in the U.S., raking in 1.08 million units (combined) in sales on their very first day.

The previous day 1 sales record for Pokémon was held by Pokémon Diamond/Pearl, which sold 780,000 in their first day in the wild in April 2007. Diamond/Pearl were the very first set of Pokémon games released for the Nintendo DS.

Black/White’s performance in the U.S. is similar to its debut in Japan, where the game soared above 2.5 million units in its first week, outdoing Diamond/Pearl’s 1.5 million debut and HeartGold/SoulSilver’s 1.4 million debut.

In case you haven’t kept up, we’ve been covering Pokémon Black/White in depth with a series of Pokémon Diaries that covers the Japanese version of Pokémon Black from beginning to end, pointing out new features and changes while trying to avoid spoilers that might potentially ruin the game for readers.

I love the look on the man’s face in the third picture. I can’t wait for that feeling when I go to pick the games up.

    • that was me times 100

    • That guy was the very first dude in the U.S. to pick the games up. :p

      • Asura

When did he pick them up?

Because I got my game on March 2nd. And I’m sure thousands of others got theirs early across the U.S. as well!

        • Doh, well that makes a whole bunch of you guys that beat him to it. XD

      • shy_mel

        Lucky guy.

      • thebanditking

Not true, he was the first guy to pick them up on the official launch day. I had my copy last Friday afternoon, got to love mom and pop stores :)

        • Lucky. >< A few of our readers were bragging about picking up early copies over Twitter, too, hahaha.

  • anyone else here get black?

i played japanese white so i decided to get american black even though i like white more

    • i got black

    • Ren

Lol, I did the opposite. I prefer the Black version even if I think Zekrom is the best of both Legendaries.

    • I got white, as for me personally it has the better exclusives, not to mention that Zekrom looks badass, and I don’t trade Pokemon that much. :P

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

I went with White because of the legendary. I’m not racist I swear

      • Tom_Phoenix

How can you be racist when the Legendary in White is black-coloured? :P

    • skyblaze

      Black over here

    • I got neither :(

    • Zero_Destiny

I’ll be picking up White this weekend (I’ll probably get Radiant Historia as well) White’s my fav color and that’s all there is to it for the most part. Well there’s also the fact that my bro has always bought the first games and I get the second (i.e. he got Diamond I got Pearl, he got Ruby, I got Sapphire, etc.). I like White better anyways. As for what Pokémon are in what version, I don’t know. I’m just going to take a dive and see what’s what as I play it.

    • DlanorKnox

I got Black. I like its legendary more, and I can get people to trade me all of its other exclusives pretty easily.

    • Suicunesol

I got a Japanese Black (I like its legendary more, but its version exclusives are not as good). So I picked up an NA White.

    • raymk

I got white myself and I got it day one =D. I got friends that got 2 blacks and 2 whites including mine.

  • The games’ awesome and worth it’s money! I play it nonstop at the moment, love to play it at boring math and business lessons, lol. xD
It’s one of the games I really love to play together with my little cousin too. xd

  • Guest

I’m getting white, I love that guys reaction :)

  • … Definitely much more crowded than the DQIX launch…

    • Sylverstone14

I was in that line for 3 hours.

  • thebanditking

Wow, just wow…….well I like to see this kind of game reach those numbers rather then all the countless FPS’s that sell way more then (I think) they should. Still I never thought these games would reach those numbers so fast, which despite their flaws I am really glad they sell as it proves there is some innocence left in the world.

Also its cool to see the NYC Nintendo store in pics, especially after going there a few months back.

  • MarkMario

    Pokemon ._.

  • Man I wish other JRPGs were as popular in the states as Pokemon, the world would be a better place.

  • Suicunesol

    Really? Only 1.08 million units?

Ah, well. BW will sell close to 5 million in the US before the month is out.

  • I like how the 3rd picture is taken at just the right time to make it look like the guy on the left is about to shoot the overly happy guy on the right.

  • Obviously it was thanks to Smugleaf that Pokemon B&W has experienced this much success :D

  • I miss Nintendo World. >< I gots myself Black. And my friend got White. Somehow this makes me happy.

I am so screwed *is playing right now*
