Sega Tease Sonic the Hedgehog 20th Anniversary Celebration

By Ishaan . April 5, 2011 . 1:32pm

2011 marks a lot of anniversaries. It marks the 15th anniversary of Resident Evil, the 25th anniversary of Dragon Quest and The Legend of Zelda, and the 15th anniversary of Pokémon. It also marks the 20th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Naturally, Sega have something planned to celebrate the event, and they’ve been teasing it over Facebook and Twitter. A tweet from their official Twitter account:

“Sonic’s 20th Anniversary is this year, but SEGA start celebrating on 7th April and you’ll only find out how on the Sonic Facebook page!”

This is the Facebook page they’re referring to, in case you want to keep an eye on it. This tease comes just months after a Sega representative at an event in Madrid, Spain reportedly mentioned plans for an upcoming “Sonic Anniversary” title to fansite, Sonic Paradise, in October 2010. It is believed that this title will be a compilation of past Sonic the Hedgehog stages, adapted for modern consoles.

  • I really hope that it’s more than just the genesis games again. How many times can Sega repackage the first four games?

    • They’ve been in meetings with Capcom regarding Street Fighter 2.

      • Exkaiser

        Hyper Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

        • Super Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Turbo Championship Edition actually sounds pretty interesting…

  • So… Barring the assumption that all the levels will be exactly the same as they used to be, Sonic 4: Episode 2?

“a compilation of past Sonic the Hedgehog stages, adapted for modern consoles.”

but Sonic 4’s already out :

    • Well hopefully in the style of Sonic Unleashed daytime levels, lol. Best sonic game Ive ever bought! I still need to speed run through it and complete it as well as get through my two hours of Sonic Colors.

      • Agreed. Sunshine levels in Unleashed are glorious. I sold my copy a while back, but I keep the demo on the 360 whenever I need a good speed run competition :D

    • Exkaiser

Too bad Sonic 4 didn’t compile the mechanics, too, huh?

  • Hopefully its the next entry of Sonic on the HD consoles. Sonic is really a game that benefits from the presentation offered on those systems, if one compares Sonic Colors and Sonic Unleashed, ultimately, in my opinion. But ultimately, Im willing to buy Sonic on whatever system its on whether it be multiplatform or exclusive. Im willing to follow my favorite. SEGA, Im ready!

  • 20 years of Sonic already? I feel so old.

    • lol tell me about it and i’m only 25! Man 5 years old when Sonic came out still remember playing Sonic 2 when I bought my Genesis back in 93 to this day…

  • It’s obviously the Dreamcast 2, launching with Sonic Adventure 3.

    And Shenmue 3.

  • Based on the recent medicore output of Sonic games, I’m really not that excited in seeing what they will bring out for Sonic’s 20th anniversary.

    • I don’t know about you but as far as i’m concerned Sonic Colors was a major step in the right direction for the franchise so you people complaining about the series should still have some faith now that Sonic Team seems to be getting it right…

      • Yes Sonic Colours was. But so was Sonic and the Secret Rings and then they started screwing up again. Getting one game right out of many isn’t enough for my faith to be restored. Hell, they couldn’t even get a 2D version right.

      • Yes I agree!

  • So many anniversaries this year! Will Sega be able to meet the expectations of the Sonic fanbase?

  • I bet they’ll release Sonic 1, 2, and 3 on 3DS (with no 3D at all, of course) or something equally as worthless.

    • If they released the Sonic Collection for 3DS with perfect emulation, I would buy it in an instant. Even better if each of the Sonic games appeared on the 3DS Virtual Console.

  • I recon we’ll just get a CG trailer to raise our hopes and put the Sonic Cycle back into motion. I’d be over the moon if they released a patch to fix the physics in Sonic 4, then I could get excited when they start talking about Sonic 4 Episode 2.

    • ForeverFidelis

I’ve been wondering if they’re even planning on going through with episode 2…

We haven’t heard anything about it

      • I think there was something said about it a while back, they wouldn’t call it “Episode 1” if there was no plans for future episodes.

  • If it is a compilation, I’m sure that somehow, it’ll still not have Sonic CD on it.

    • malek86

Wasn’t it included in the GC Gems Collection?

    • We’ve had more than enough compilations already, but I wouldn’t put anything past Sega.
