Sony On NGP Launch: “No Impact From The Quake”

By Ishaan . April 6, 2011 . 11:52pm

Contrary to a recent statement by Sony Computer Computer America president, Jack Tretton, the earthquakes in Japan have had “no impact” on the NGP’s launch, according to Sony’s offices in Japan.

"So far we see no impact from the quake on our launch plan," Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman, Satoshi Fukuoka, told, labelling Bloomberg’s recent report, based on an interview with Tretton, as “wrong.”

Tretton recently said to Bloomberg, with regard to the earthquakes: “It may be the straw that says ‘maybe we get to just one market by the end of the year.’”

However, when Sony initially unveiled the NGP, Fukuoka says, they didn’t commit to a simultaneous global launch in the first place. It would seem those plans had never changed, despite Tretton’s statement.

Seems a bit of a cover up to me.

  • I feel that Tretton may have used the tragedy in Japan as a scapegoat for not having a 2011 launch outside of Japan, knowing it wasn’t coming regardless. If so, that’s sad… and seeing Tretton’s other bullshit, I wouldn’t be surprised.

    • Unless he just wants to keep the surprise announcement of the 2011 release in the US a surprise for E3 and to get our hopes down.

  • Just let it be region free and we’ll be happy.

    • Aoshi00

I think NGP should be region free following PS3.. I got the Jpn 3DS and don’t want to miss out on the US games (I’m missing out on Netflix alrdy).. I still hope that they would be lenient and make the games region free (like most US 360 games are region free..)..

      • I didn’t know about 360 games being region free thanks for the info. But I do think that Sony will do that it’s great because people then don’t need to wait for it to release in their regions and worry about games not being compatible.

Ive been hearing lots of sources say that Sony arent keen on region free, but id take that with a grain of salt. I do know that with Xbox its ultimately up to the developers of the game whether to make it specifically region free or not. I notice a lot of Japan based games, even those imported to America rarely make the region free status (being a european we pretty much have the shortest straw there, ive had a lot of cases where a game has made it to both Japan and America but isnt playable in PAL regions).

Even the PSP has started going in a direction to prevent people from taking advantage of PSN’s region free downloads and multi region accounts so im really keeping my fingers crossed for good news.

  • Well, it’s hard to believe that it has “no impact”, but sure. Whatever floats your boat.

  • ” no impact on launch” , hope it is truth.

  • Oh what a relief. Hopefully it comes to US this year. Im ready for the NGP.

    • I honestly don’t see it happening this year in America personally I think it’ll be Japan in the Fall and America & Europe in the Spring of 2012…

      • If the 3DS can make it in just one month from the JPN release I do not see how Sony could even manage it. Plus the Spring hasnt been so hot for Nintendo to release a system (That is, not met expectations), so Sony might as well not aim for doing a release in Spring as well, March…Plus if it is out before January they can take advantage of the Tax Return season which caused February to have massive spikes in hardware sales!!!

Satoshi Fukuoka: “So far we see no impact from the quake on our launch plan.”
    Anonymous: “Challenge accepted.”

I hope they just don’t go that far.
*NGP gets hacked on launch day*

    • UGH Anonymous, ruining my psn experience…

    • amagidyne

If they actually knew how to hack anything then that would be worrying, yes.

      • doomspeller10

Not that they need to hack much if they manage to get confidential keys and information with their attacks. Apparently they were trying to get more info on the PS3 though. Who knows, perhaps they got something.

        • amagidyne

I don’t doubt that a lot of people will be trying to crack it, but it’s more likely to come from people who know what they’re doing.

If the data required to crack their consoles were that easy to find, there would probably already have been a leak, and groups like fail0verflow wouldn’t have had to work to figure out their keys.

Anonymous’ attacks never get more complex than DDOS, SQL injection and social engineering, so I can’t see them uncovering anything important unless somebody in Sony’s R&D is ridiculously negligent.

  • Sony’s a Flying type, has Levitate as its ability, used Magnet Rise, or is holding a balloon.

Don’t really care about the release date, just hope it’s an affordable price -__-

  • kupomogli

Maybe he meant no impact from the quake as. “Japan is still getting the NGP” where as Jack Tretton said that only one location would be getting the NGP this year due to the quake.

If they get it in all regions for the holiday like they previously announced then that’d be good. Really hope the NGP does good.

  • Just give me a damn price.

  • bugmeknot

Reminds me of the different Sony branches contradicting each other over the existence of separate 3G and non-3G models.
