Ashura’s Wrath Has You Fight Planet-Sized Bosses

By Ishaan . April 12, 2011 . 9:37am

Asura’s Wrath, developed by CyberConnect2, will play out in an episodic nature, similar to a TV drama series, Capcom say about the game. That’s one of their bullet-points anyway; the other is that you can fight planet-sized boss characters.

Wait, there’s more! You’ll also be able to control Asura during cutscenes, affecting how the game plays. CyberConnect2 are allegedly attempting to achieve a sense of “player-controlled narrative”.

Asura’s Wrath is still coming to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but Capcom don’t have a release date pinned down for the game yet.

Food for thought:

Deadly Premonition, too, was designed to play out like an episodic TV series.

  • Barrit

With every new trailer, this game never fails to amaze me.

  • urbanscholar

Ashura’s Wrath…never seen a game so violent and aesthetically pleasing to my senses all at once.

  • I can’t help but feel that this will be somehow connected to God Hand.

  • joesz

    Don’t fall into the trailer.

Many trailers looked awesome but after the game’s release ,the game usually sucked(Knights Contract)

Well,on the bright side,Cyperconnect2 are usually excellent in the field of epic battles.

    • I don’t know, sure Knights Contract wasn’t the super hardcore game of burning passion, but I enjoyed my short time with it~

      • Guest

But I was able to surmise that it wasn’t going to be much. It didn’t really excite me. This however has potential. Even if it uses Unreal 3 (which I’ve grown tired of)

        • I agree, the game isn’t really exciting, yet it’s not as bad as people make it seem, it’s your standard action hack&slash game with small nice elements.
You’re right though, this one looks really promising, hope it does not disappoint as my expectations are going to skyrocket with this awesome trailer!

      • Kibbitz

Actually, if you care to elaborate a little, is it even decent? All I kept hearing was “Whole game – one long escort quest with dumb suicidal escortee – bad”.

        • It’s Ok, nothing great, but it isn’t really bad either, probably a taste thing. I enjoyed it, but I have to say I didn’t expected much, though, I can agree with the others one long escort quest.

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

That’s different. The Knights Contract trailers that were awesome weren’t gameplay trailers; they were completely cg. These ones, on the other hand

  • ….WHY THE HELL ISN’T SOMEONE MAKING THIS INTO AN ANIME AND MANGA!

Man that trailer just reminded me of JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure.

    • I wouldn’t mind Jojo getting a new game. It’s an awesome series and yet no dev wants to touch it? RAGE

      • It’s not that they don’t want to touch it, it’s just that they CAN’T touch it as it is too out of the world awesomeness!!

        • Ahhh, more people who appreciates Jojo ^_^

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

        YES.

    • z_merquise

It looked more like Fist of the North Star to me. Except it’s more ‘angry’.

  • The music still sounds like it could be in Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm, a mighty phenomenally epically awesome series. With CyberConnect 2 this game is definitely on my list for best game of the year. Just look at this mind blowing drool inducing trailer. This game is the game of games, Day 1 Baby Day 1!!!!1

  • PrinceHeir

“Deadly Premonition, too, was designed to play out like an episodic TV series.”

isn’t heavy rain design as episodic series? haven’t played the game yet though :

looks badass, finally we might see tons of epic scale just like God of War III(which i haven’t played it yet unfortunately)

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

I hope you have not spoiled the beginning of GoWIII for yourself, because it is mindblowingly impressive. No overstatement here, seriously.

I was like “=O” for 20 minutes or something. Scale, action, setpieces… One of the most amazing segments in a game in a long time. And the graphics… Oh, the graphics!

      • PrinceHeir

ehh i only watched the trailers and previews, not the actually walkthrough itself ^^

i might buy it along with Mass Effect 2 this week ^^

        • [The Hunter] Doomrider

          Enjoy it, then =D

          • PrinceHeir

            I Will :P

    • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Heavy Rain isn’t episodic. You play out the story in pieces, but there’s still just one giant story, as opposed to multiple, unrelated storybits

      • PrinceHeir

i see, is the game good? it looks good to me ^^

        • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Oh, yes, definitely! Towards the end it got so intense I ended up being hours late to work because I could not stop playing

          • PrinceHeir

            awesome :D

will try it for sure ^^

    • There’s Alan Wake, which is played in an episode TV thing as well.

I wonder how this game intends to use this episodic thing.

      • Guest

Evil Zone for PS1 was also like that

  • puchinri

I’m still pleasantly excited. But I still want moar.

  • papuruka

I see that Chris Redfield punching boulders was the main inspiration behind the one man vs finger sequence in the trailer.

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

    Awful trailer, awesome game.

  • Heh. That trailer made me go from having no interest in this game to raising a single eyebrow and going, “Hmmmm…Perhaps I should watch this one more closely.”

  • theoriginaled

Wow. I mean.. Im super psyched about this game but “You’ll also be able to control Ashura during cutscenes, affecting how the game plays” has to be the most obtuse way of saying QTEs ever. We get it, you want the QTEs in but recognize that no one really likes them that much. Please dont blow rainbows up our ass CC2. Gamers aren’t THAT stupid. We’ll still respect you in the morning if you tell us the truth.

  • Only Japanese super heroes could fight off a planet-sized villain. You go awesome hero!
Haha, cool trailer, but the end part is just ridiculous to me. x)

    • Guest

Well U.S. heroes theoretically can too but their games fail to ever show it :( (well God of War does a semi decent job)

Shame that Superman PS3 game never came to fruition. The old trailer for it looked awesome

  • xxbrothawizxx

guess this means they aren’t working on a Naruto game for NGP then….
anyway this seems like the perfect game for them. They have a history with huge boss battle and TV shows

  • Man I have to say, this is the first time in which that I’ve worried about a main character within a new game. I mean, yeah Asura is hellishly strong, but when his rage power and arms begun to fail him, crumbling away from the overwhelming God Asura was facing. Before he was down to his last arm, I was like: O.O HOLY **** Is he going to die here?!

I guess it was the music playing during that scene, made it feel greatly epic and dramatic as if it was like “all or nothing”. I’m looking more forward to this game.
    Asura’s Wrath FTW!

  • Saraneth

Ok, this is getting ridiculous. Bigger bosses do not equal better bosses. I learned this playing Shadow of the Colossus, which, despite having large bosses, was not fun. With large bosses control problems get magnified and camera angles can be problematic. It becomes harder to judge what the enemy’s actions will be since you can’t see all of the enemy, so you’re practically fighting blind – skill isn’t as much a part of the equation. The best boss battles in Kingdom Hearts were the Riku and Sephiroth battles because you could pinpoint their locations and predict their actions and fight with skill without the frustrations of crappy cameras and poor controls. What’s with this arms race for bigger bosses?

    • Depends on the individual I suppose. I deeply enjoyed Shadow of Colossus very much and never had a problem with the camera or the controls. Climbing up on to giants and taking them out one by one was awesome.

Although, facing against beings that are larger than the planet itself…Well damn sign me up! Of course what makes a boss battle good is how its executed and how the game establishes the atmosphere during the battle.
To draw in the player and make him or her feel a part of what’s unfolding.
Hopefully this game will have all this, which I think it will.

      • Agreed! Bigger bosses may not equal better bosses, but they surely mean that the fight has a lot more impact on the player, fighting against enemies as big or smaller than you are cool, but they can never give you the feeling of fighting a monstrous giant which seems undefeatable, it’s just more rewarding!

      • I know. I loved the battles in it. Shadow of the Colossus is not only one of my all time favorite games, but it’s one that I never finished partly because I didn’t want it to end. It was like a work of art to savor. I would set aside an hour or two just to tackle each colossi and I’d just feel while playing. It’s one of the most amazing experiences known to gaming and I, for one, cannot wait for the PS3 version with Ico (which I’ve actually never played).

    • FireCouch

You were probably just bad at the game.

    • Telling me that you hated Shadow of the Colossus is akin to telling me, “I do not have the same blood running through my veins that you do. I am not of the same species as you. We are alien to each other, you and I.”

      • Saraneth

I wouldn’t say that I hated the game. I’d say that I was surprised that there was so much hype for a game deficient in both story and gameplay and felt that I had wasted the $12 I spent on it. I’ve played games with difficult bosses – I must have spent 10 hours before I finally beat Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts – but when the controls are poor and the camera sucks I can’t feel anything but frustration with the game.

        • theoriginaled

Im sorry I just cant get over this. Youre actually citing kingdom hearts over sotc for its camera work and story? Two of the things that Kingdom hearts is generally regarded as an utter failure in? Theres more “story” in a single wordless cutscene from sotc than there is in the entire convoluted MESS that is the kh games. Just because you cant understand subtext doesnt mean its not there.

          • Saraneth

Look, I get the subtext. No one in the game is actually evil and the whole tragedy is just part of their unavoidable fate; they did what they believed they had to, even if it wasn’t quite right. But even with the subtext, there’s not that much actual story there. Second of all, I never said that Kingdom Hearts had a good story. I just said that it had better controls and camera work (though the camera is pretty bad, it’s still better than SOTC’s, especially when facing single enemies like Sephiroth or Riku).

  • IceRomancer

Wow my mind has been blown O_O
    Too much epicness!

  • YEEESSSSS

    VIDEOGAMES HAVE WON

  • Darkrise

    Hmm… Seems SF influenced.

  • Kris

Looks like a heck of a first level (at least, I hope this is just the first level)

  • Guest

    Mysterious extra H’s, Ishaan.

  • No gameplay mean no sale. I don’t want those long Naruto type cutscene that you can’t control. So even though it looks cool I’m not getting hype until I see real time gameplay.

    • Slight problem…

      1. Actual real time gameplay was shown months…
      2. Its been stated within more details from other sites that you can literally control Asura during the OTEs. And I don’t mean by the OTE buttons either. It’ll mix in with real time gameplay.

  • YoFace

Asura or Ashura. Silly Isaan, I mean Ishaan.

  • Siren: Blood Curse is done episodically, as well.

    • Chow

As well as the most recent Alone in the Dark.

  • ufoflash

wha…..what…..the? that! now that was an incredible trailer! i haven’t heard anything about this game before this but that one trailer was enough to make me want to buy the game…. damn they really out did themselves with that trailer i just hope the game itself lives up to what was shown in this trailer……but damn that was incredible…….(sorry im still kind of in chock after seeing that trailer)

  • ufoflash

wha……what..the….? That! That was one incredible trailer! I just heard of this game but that one trailer was some how enough for me to want to buy this game no doubts about it. and i cant believe i found my self worried about that guy their(what is his name? Asura?) without knowing anything about him before this! This is the first time this has happened! But damn im just worried how is the game going to live up to a trailer like this? i just hope the game really is as incredible as this trailer made it out to be. But either way this is definitely on my most anticipated games list.(sorry about the double post)
