Index Holdings Have Future Plans For Catherine

By Ishaan . April 15, 2011 . 6:02pm

Catherine has done rather well for Atlus and parent company, Index Holdings. At launch, the game beat their sales target of 150,000 units in Japan, and as of the end of February, the game had sold 250,000 units, according to a report at Keitai Watch. The increased goal for the game is now 300,000.

At a recent financial briefing, Yoshimi Ogawa, president and CEO of Index Holdings, stated that Catherine is now a new property, alongside Shin Megami Tensei and Etrian Odyssey, and that Index have various plans for Catherine’s expansion in the media business going forward.

We have one example of this to share already; Kadokawa are publishing a Catherine novel in Japan next month. Persona 4 is getting its own anime series, so I suppose it isn’t inconceivable that the same could happen to Catherine, too. Ports to handheld systems are another possibility, given that not everyone has the privacy to play a game like Catherine on a television set.

As  we reported previously, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Hunter, a mobile phone game on the GREE mobile platform, also performed favourably. Throughout 2011, Index plan to aggressively pursue the social games market on both mobiles and smart phones.

This is great! Hopefully it can be somewhat like persona where if they decide to make another game similar to this, it’ll fit into the catherine world.

I’m glad to hear about the novel and the persona series. This is turning out to be a great year for ATLUS.

      …NISA?

…maybe he meant how NISA might handle the P4 anime to us like P:trinity?

My bad i had nisa on the mind after watching disgaea 4 video’s ^^; Fixed

It’s ok, is the NISA effect, we all go through that every once in a while

  • http://slitherup.tumblr.com/ THRONE

I really hate the name Index Holdings.

    • Ladius

Hate is a strong word, but I can say that I dislike both Index and Atlus USA’s current policies, albeit for completely different reasons.

Thankfully Atlus Japan itself seems to be fine, and Catherine’s success will probably play an important role in ensuring their (relative) indipendence inside Index.

        Name. He said the name.

A Catherine anime? I guess that would be 3 years in the making based on P4′s and P3 anime timelines and release (~>2 yrs). Though the game seems like an anime. Sequel maybe?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rudy-Soto/100001518601121 Rudy Soto

I don’t know about a anime sequel dude
seeing as the game has multiple endings

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

That didn’t stop virtually every other popular ADV game from being animated. :p

      • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

How many animes that come from games with multiple endings i’ve seen now >_< (and is never the one i want D:)

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rudy-Soto/100001518601121 Rudy Soto

But a good number of those animes tend to end disappointingly :/
My exceptions are Fate and Yosuga no Sora

  • heartless141

i hope it’s not a sequel, Catherine is not a game you require sequels.

    • Aoshi00

I hope they don’t milk the title to death… it’s a good new IP and really doesn’t need direct sequel like Nier.. The puzzle + drama/horror/mystery was unique, and I’m not sure if it would even work as an anime..

I did order the novel though.. I’m sure it’s just a retelling of the same story.. Steins;gate was made into two novels too but w/ many differences because of the time traveling element (the anime is definitely not as good as the game).

But please don’t dumb it down like Blue Dragon w/ the subsequent mediocre anime, manga, and portable spinoffs.. those things messed up the brand so much it couldn’t even get a sequel..

      • Ladius

Nier’s timeline would actually make prequels really feasible, that world has a rich background that the first game barely explored.

        • Aoshi00

Yea, I realize there were many things unexplored in Nier, there were some short novels in the artbook, and I’m getting the drama CD being released later this month too (I’m a big fan of drama CDs).. but sometimes I think sequels (milking) aren’t necessarily a good thing.. and a game like Catherine, it really doesn’t require sequels.. it’s really a self contained short thriller.. Like I’ve seen the first Butterfly Effect movie.. but I haven’t seen 2 or 3 w/ complete different cast, not sure how good the other ones are.. But milking it just for profit like FF7′s spinoffs.. I have a bad feeling..

Like I used Blue Dragon as an example, the milking w/ the manga, anime series, DS spinoffs were so bad we didn’t even get Blue Dragon 2.. and I’m not sure if a lot of people are asking a Catherine 2… just make a different game. That’s why Catherine was so special, because it was not Persona 5 or Disgaea 4…

          • http://geekouts.blogspot.com/ miruki

You should read Graceling and after you finished the book and are as pleased as I was with the characters, the way the story developed and the end you will look foward to the sequel as much as I do (it’s been out for quite some time, didn’t get a chance to read it yet), even tho it’s not a direct sequel, but just about new characters in the same world.

You get wha I’m trying to say right? XD Even tho the game may be complete as it is and there are no sequels required, it doesn’t neccessarily have to turn out bad if they just want to use the theme & style again in a way, if they want to crate a similar game with a completely unrelated story. Well, I guess first I should play Catherine, but I think I would like more games like it. :)

          • Aoshi00

lol that title reminds me of the Jolie movie Changeling..

I hear ya… but I’m just worried “Index Holdings” here is just being greedy and milking w/ unnecessary spinoffs, like w/ Blue Dragon.. I guess Atlus could stil come up w/ good games w/ the similar theme and world.. Someone mentioned Dragonball like how Shounen Jump forced Toriyama to continue after Freeza because it sold magazines.. I guess I’m thankful because otherwise we wouldn’t have gotten the Android arc w/ future Trunkcs which I really liked, I thought the Buu arc was a little too much though.. but w/ Catherine I dunno, it just seems so self contained, I guess I’ve just been playing it to death alrdy..

Actually I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately, I was reading Howling’s Moving Castle and need to read the Borrowers before I watch the new Ghilbli movie.. but I’m playing Gyakuten Kenji 2 (Ace Atttorney Investigations 2) and Steins;Gate (a heck of a lot of reading w/ all the time traveling mumble jumble…), the time traveling themes are so gripping it makes me hang on to the edge of my seat.. some of the stuff is so emotional it takes my breath away, you should watch the anime if you get a chance, it just started…

          • http://geekouts.blogspot.com/ miruki

Blahh.. reached the end of the reply-chain again. ;>

I’m still waiting for that promised mail btw.. I think. I think it was your turn last. Feel free to prove me wrong, the last half a year has been one hell of a rollercoaster ride, so I have no idea of anything actually, haha. :>

Anyways, I’ve gotta keep up with lots of stuff too. I just finished reading a new Holly Black book which is gonna get sequels too (might even be out already, as I’m reading the German version, tho I love Black’s original versions too and English books are cheaper, so maybe I should switch.. XD) and I’ve gotta watch all those anime I couldn’t watch yet because I currently only have access to mobile internet (so no downloads or streams for me), I could start watching some of those anime DVDs I bought, but it’s all series I already saw so yeah..

You should read Graceling anyways, just try to squeaze it in somehow. It’s a great fantasy novel, one of the best I’ve read the past few years. c:

I get your point with the milking, but I dunno… Index only makes social network games, right? We don’t have to care about those. As long as Atlus staus in charge of developing a sequel it’s gonna be cool. I’ll just keep believing that until proven wrong! I think I might have been watching too much Sailor Moon lately, I’m starting to be all naive again. :>

          • http://geekouts.blogspot.com/ miruki

And maybe it won’t be Catherine 2 but I dunno.. Christine. XD

          • http://geekouts.blogspot.com/ miruki

            Or even better: Christopher!

(Me wants more female main characters, clearly.)

    • Ladius

They could make new stories with the only link being a character named Catherine, or they could use some of the original game’s themes completely changing story and background. But yeah, it’s rather obvious that this game wasn’t planned to start a series.

      • Aoshi00

I thought this game was unique as a standalone game.. they shouldn’t milk it w/ sequels, otherwise it would be like Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street, AvP, or Final Destination.. that kinda cheapens the brand..

        • Ladius

I completely agree with you, but at this point Index pretty much fits the “greedy publisher” stereotype, and I don’t think they care so much about cheapening a brand if a sequel can sell some other 300k copies.

Of course even a “Catherine 2″ could be an extremely good game, the developer will still be Atlus Japan after all.

          • heartless141

i don’t think a good sequel for Catherine would have ANYTHING similar to the first game at all,
another type of Puzzle, another theme, may be sex related, but still, another theme, another protagonist, may be female this time for the hell of it.
            hence, not a sequel imo.
            (But keep Shoji Meguro pleasseeeee)

          • Guest

I would like it to be like Inception…..or Sucker Punch now. Multiple games within a game. Dream within a dream.

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Just curious, what makes you think Index fits the “greedy publisher” stereotype? Rather, what’s a greedy publisher?

    • OneOkami

      BioShock didn’t require sequels, either.

  • amagidyne

A Catherine port for the NGP would make sense. I just hope they go for P5 first.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

    Catherine vs. Street Fighter confirmed.

    • Exkaiser

That’s pronounced Catherine CROSS Street Fighter.

  • IceRomancer

    More Catherine? Fine by me!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Humzah-Jan/100001147084979 Humzah Jan

More Catherine = More sex. Hell yeah

  • doubletaco

So is Index Holdings the Activision of Japan?

    • Hraesvelgr

      Thought that was Square Enix.

      • https://twitter.com/#!/Ojsinnerz Firo_Prochainezo

        Not Capcom?

  • PrinceHeir

    Katherine please :D

would love to play either both women in their own perspective views. DLC maybe?

please publish that Catherine Novel too :P

    • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

I can only imagine the novel getting published onto either the iBooks or the Kindle platforms and not seeing physical release…perhaps with enough response Atlus US could considering bringing it to the west (well unless you read JPN novels)

  • Pichi

I’m for more Catherine if they do the characters and story well. That’s what I like about Catherine, after all.

As for other media, I’ll take a novel if its in physical form. Anime, not too sure about that. Depends on how they go about it.

  • HarryHodd

I’m still waiting to play Catherine. I can hardly wait. Would really like an Atlus console RPG to play too.

  • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

If that’s the case, then, seeing how Catherine represents the mortal sin Lust, I’m wondering if we’ll see other games that would represent/test the main character’s issue with a mortal sin.

And please, this game’s story is best not stretched out thin, a la how Toei Animation forced Toriyama to extend DBZ, during its 1st airing in Japan.

    • Aoshi00

It was Shounen Jump (not Toei, they just did the anime adaptation, but they did the non-canon GT after Z) that made Toriyama continue drawing DB after Freeza.. gotta say it was a good thing though, otherwise we wouldn’t have gotten the Android/Cell arc… which I thought was the perfect place to end.

  • AzureNova

Persona 5 as well too please. That’s not too much to ask is it? ^_^

  • http://twitter.com/IXRoxasXI Rei Fal’Cie Sanchez

Me wants Catherine anime or a port to the NGP….

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/GJD6KMPFMNNIHFKRN6FI76P5KA Allison

A Catherine anime would probably be pushing it a bit too far, though a manga wouldn’t be out of the question.

  • TrevHead

I just want the original game to see an xbox PAL release and i’ll be happy. Its like US & Japan has gone Catherine crazy but has forgotton about everyone else

  • http://twitter.com/GamiMatsu Gami Matsu

I just love social games and hope Atlus starts bringing them to US!!!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/mangeezer jerry

It looks like a swell game and all but I’d rather they just leave it at that and focus on Persona again

  • Shadow_Raskolnik

So, a Catherine-based cellphone dating service?

If it’s Index that sounds likely.
