Pandora’s Tower Feels Rather Grim In Its Theme

By Ishaan . April 20, 2011 . 12:33am

Ende, the protagonist of Pandora’s Tower: Until I Return to Your Side, carries a weapon called the Oreichalkos chain that he can use in many ways, including pulling meat and items from monsters. This new trailer shows that you can also use it like a grappling hook or to swing things around.

Other weapons in Pandora’s Tower appear to include a sword and some sort of scythe, each with their own combos. But perhaps it isn’t the combat that stands out most in the trailer; judging by the scenes, Pandora’s Tower looks rather grim in theme, especially that one scene with Ceres attempting to down the raw monster meat.

I am excited. Ever more so than before. But poor Ceres.
(For some reason, I keep wanting to draw parallels to Nero and Kyrie with Ende and Ceres…)

  • Zero_Destiny

Poor Ceres ;__; The things she has to put up with. So sad. I know I couldn’t deal with something that awful. XD

    • Aoshi00

Seeing Ceres holding the clumps of meat feels like Fear Factor *.*… and we thought taking bitter medicine was hard… to die beautifully or continue to live hideously…

I like the atmosphere, feels like Nier mixed w/ monsters from Bayonetta.. looks like a classic alrdy w/ its epic score..

I love the black box they’re using as well.. awesome cover..

      • Funnily enough, there was a minor controversy about that cover and I don’t know if you saw it…

Andriasang posted an article about it a few days ago, but it doesn’t include the most interesting comparison picture.

        • Aoshi00

lol.. I thought I saw that guy somewhere.. well.. I prefer the art here to Nomura’s though.. this cover looks really good like Last Story’s (but that has the girl in the front and the guy in the back).. you scared me for a second there they would replace this cover lol..

      • EvilAkito

Yeah, I too got a bit of a Nier vibe from the trailer. And if I had any faith at all that this will come out in the US (and I don’t), I’d be pretty excited.

        • Aoshi00

I hope they would explore some darker themes like Nier.. I love how Nier was dark but it was artistic instead of plain disturbing.. If anything this looks like a solid action RPG.. at first that witch char looks like something from Pan’s Labyrinth.. but the other armored giants look more like from Bayonetta.. it’s really horrible fans need to speculate these games would be localized at all.. I mean the Wii has been getting some heavy hitters lately, Xenoblade, Last Story, and this.. wait too long and we would have a Wii HD alrdy…

          • EvilAkito

I hate to say this, but even as somebody who use to be a huge fan of Nintendo, I now honestly think of them as a sort of vampire that sucks away my love of gaming. If any other publisher (and I mean ANY other publisher) had published this (or Xenoblade, Last Story, Fatal Frame 4, or Soma Bringer for that matter) a US release would be practically guaranteed. But I guess from Nintendo’s point of view, the expected profits from these games would only be a drop in the bucket, and thus not worth the time and effort.

Though I’ll honestly say that it’s a bit too late in the game for me to really care that much. Pandora’s Tower does look pretty cool though.

    • PrinceHeir

      can’t wait for this :)

why the hell does she have to eat that O_O

      • To temporarily ward off a curse she suffers from

  • ryebot

Sweet! And we’ll never see it in English. :/

    • Well, if things go as they are lately, we will.

Though maybe it will be with a British accent. lol

      • ryebot

Oh, I’m all for British accents! But What I’d rather have is an NTSC release.

  • Too many melancholic cut-scenes, why can’t we have more games about spreading joy and happiness

    • Doesn’t 80% of Nintendo’s library already do that?

    • Psychological horror is the best horror.

Too many games out there are just OOH NASTY THING IS CHASING YOU/POPS UP IN FRONT OF YOU, SHOOT IT/RUN AWAY. A person from a vegetarian culture with the choice of choking down raw, nasty beast meat or becoming a rampaging monster who’ll kill everyone she’s ever known or loved? There’s some good mindfuckery.

…Of course I’m assuming the execution will be full of bad animu tropes and the game will only make it to Europe in the absolute best-case scenario, so…eh. But the idea gets a thumbs-up.

  • I eagerly await of news of localisation and have high hopes for this title.

  • karasuKumo

Looking great so far, but nothing too original.

1:42 Reminded me of Princess Mononoke :/

  • Chain swinging and platforming reminds me of Rygar. The overall design isn’t too different either

  • Wake

If this even comes out in the US, I have a feeling the dubbing is going to kill the atmosphere. Imagine this with the Arc Rise Fantasia dub team.

    • Aoshi00

Hm.. as long as Ignition doesn’t touch it, we should be fine.. If they dub it like how S-E dubbed Nier it would be pretty awesome.. I thought I heard Noto Mamiko’s voice on the official site, but in this trailer Ceres sounds different.. wonder who Ende’s VA is..

      • PrinceHeir

        yeah she sound different :

        hopefully it’s her though

    • FireCouch

Most games don’t have Arc Rise Fantasia quality dubs.

  • Ende looks so cool…a leading reason for me to get the game, all smiles. Hopefully we get to experience this game in the US before Holiday 2013.

  • This premise is so incredibly compelling to me. I must have this game! Looks beautiful.

  • Christian Wright

their in-game models look nothing like lightning and noctis

  • Suicunesol

I don’t see what the deal is about eating raw meat. Place it atop some white rice with some soy sauce and wasabi.

    • Wasabi? What is that? It seems like its similar to Arabidopis thaliana.

      • Ren

You don’t know what’s wasabi!? Alright, if you ever eat it, remember to eat it pure with big spoonfuls for maximum pleasure.

        • [The Hunter] Doomrider

  • vrakanox

My hype levels are through the roof. This really has somewhat of a “Nier” feel to it. This is one of those games that will get imported if it doesn’t come to America.

    • Ryos

I hear you, man. I’m going to be disappointed if this doesn’t come out here. :(

  • “Ceres attempting to down the raw monster meat.”

Oh come on, you’re doing this on purpose!

    • Guest

put some hot sauce on it you’ll be fine

  • Ren

Oh yeah, there have been sites mentioning that Celes is from a vegetarian tribe based on a unconfirmed leak.

  • gatotsu911

But hey, I do love me some Dies Irae.

  • more games worth to wait … and still no news about US release … I hope they don’t released in the same months …

  • the old woman has an…evil aura around her. O_O

that aside, this game looks gorgeous.

  • Joanna

My stomach has been a little on the queasy side today, but this trailer made it worse. So I guess the trailer has done it’s job. That meat looked positively putrid. :|
