Growlanser IV: Overload To Grow On PSP

By Ishaan . April 26, 2011 . 6:51pm

A new PSP game mentioned in this week’s Japanese Famitsu magazine is Growlanser IV: Overload, which sounds like it could possibly be some kind of a port of Growlanser IV: Wayfarer of Time on the PlayStation 2.

Incidentally, Growlanser IV was never released in the U.S. or Europe. Atlus went from Growlanser: Generations to Growlanser V (Heritage of War).

No further details are available on Growlanser IV: Overload at the moment, but we’ll keep you posted as we learn more. Prior to this game, Atlus ported the original Growlanser to the PSP in 2009. The PSP version added new story paths, a new ending, and two heroines.

  • Ive never heard of the series before but Im always ready for a new RPG. Count me in.

  • IsaacGravity

Gr-Growlanser IV on the PSP…? That means I may finally get to play it! Yeah, I’ll definitely be waiting for more info!

  • Phoenix_Apollo

Oh boy. I hope, for the sake of the fans, that one of the two PSP Growlansers gets localized…

  • One of my favorite artists of all time. :) Satoshi Urushihara! (~.~)/

    • Moriken

I solely love him for Langrisser *_* (and I hate Growlanser for being not Langrisser…it’s okay, but it’s not Langrisser)

  • I love Growlanser! I have Generations and Heritage of War I would love to get my hands on the fourth.

  • always liked Growlanser(probably for the character designs…Urushihara-sensei rules!)…Well, let’s wait and see how this turns out~

    • Zero_Destiny

Yes love the Art. Raioh Where the heck were you?! I was so Freaked that I lost a nakama. Who would stop me if I went on a outburst of Robot rage? I need you to keep my Robot no Tamashii in check. XD

      • No worries I’m stil alive and kickin’, though the same can’t be said about my comp…it’s dead, so I end up borrowing my sisters laptop for now(hell it’s hard, not used to laptops~). Do not worry about your Robot no Tamashii, even if all of my comps, laptops and cellphones would die this instant, I still would find a way to come here and stop the outburst with my Nakama no Ken!!!

        • Zero_Destiny

Nakama Punch Ouch I better behave myself. XD

Your friendship and compassion won’t go to waste even if your comp.s all die I will find a way to reach you. I will use those emotions to save the world. :D

          • Kris

            D’awww, you guys are adorable.

  • Ladius

OMG, the best Growlanser (along with 1) headed for PSP? *__*

I really, really, REALLY, hope Atlus USA does the right thing this time, Trails in the Sky’s success shows that a great jrpg can still have a good run on PSP if its quality is high.

    • cj_iwakura

Color me not optimistic, but lord knows I’m hoping.

      • Ladius

Well, since last year we have seen a Trails in the Sky and three Ys games localized, the western announcements of Tales of Graces F and Xenoblade and Inafune in a Neptunia game… miracles can happen in the jrpg scene :P

That said yeah, I don’t appreciate how Atlus USA practically dropped the massive jrpg offer it proudly upheld till 2009, and I won’t hold my breath waiting for a Growlanser 4 PSP announcement :( If it was localized, on the other hand, I would really rejoice since I loved the game when I played the Japanese PS2 version some years ago and would gladly double dip to play it in English.

        • cj_iwakura

Atlus USA is a business. Demon’s Souls made money. So much money. Bye bye, quirky Japanese games, hellloooo WRPG bank.

          • Ladius

What irks me is that they could go both ways : I love wrpgs and I like Atlus USA covering more niches than before, but the way they suddenly dropped support for so many series and developers they previously covered was truly a letdown. I have nothing against them publishingdistributing wrpgs, party games or Naruto games, but when the only jrpgs still released are those by Atlus (plus the odd Sting one, and apparently even that has ended) something is amiss, imho.

I mean, no one is asking them to localize incredibly niche titles like My World My Way, Ontamarama or Draglade (I was really surprised to see them announced, back in the days), but abandoning series like Luminous Arc, Summon Night, Union (the Yggdra spinoffs), Super Robot Taisen OGS Endless Frontier and Growlanser and going from the 20 jrpgs localized in fiscal year 2008-2009 to the 3 (2 of them porting) of fiscal year 2010-2011 is really sad.

Aside from old series (Summon Night would be unfeasible since the dev went bankrupt, for example) there are many great Ds and PSP jrpgs still unlocalized, and the good ones released in the west are selling well (Radiant Historia is on second print, Trails’ first print seems to be almost exhausted, etc), so I hope Atlus USA can surprise us in the upcoming months, I’m ready to support their efforts :)

          • Business, yes, but Demon’s Souls was something unique. Thing is, alot of people still want and are still willing to fork out money for those “quirky Japanese games”. Even if we only got a couple of the ones we’ve been asking and asking them for it would be nice :/

          • Demon’s Souls is a jrpg…

  • Arcm

I loved Working Designs release of Growlanser: Generations, I pulled an all nighter on the release day so I could get all ending on Growlanser 2.

  • GROWLANSER!!! this saga show how datim sim should be.

I want know about the new heroines reoute/ending…(Silvernale anyone? *_*) MOAR fairies too.

  • This is awesome!

  • i think Atlus jp trying to rebooted this awesome series for maybe a growlanser 7?

  • i think Atlus jp trying to rebooted this awesome series for maybe a growlanser 7?

  • Ereek

Wonderful. No really, it’s a wonderful game.

Not so wonderful is that western audiences won’t be playing without importing.

  • kroufonz

for a second i tough it is growlanser 1 psp localization :p (other than IV, there is VI, I. I psp remake also never come to the west)

even tough atlus usa now busy mainly focusing on western ip, i still hope they going to localize even more japanesse game after that. (at least catherine get released over here)

  • Hours

I always like to see more Growlanser

  • I hope this game is updated enough, to the point @playstation #SCEA would allow this game’s potential US release here.

    • BK0000

Sony isn’t an issue anymore. The PSP is at the point where they’ll approve anything. The problem is that Atlus has given up on Growlanser in America. We’ll never seen an English version of the game from them and it’s unlikely that they’ll let anyone else license it.

      • Too little too late for @playstation #SCEA now, unless if SCEA decided to localize this themselves. :s

  • Letiumtide

Excuse me while I hyperventilate, get excited, and then cry knowing that Atlus USA will never bring it over.

  • Growlanser IV Overload *neeeeeeeeeeds* :3

  • Growlanser IV Overload coverage/screens/art :D

  • Souji Tendou

I hope this game got localized.

  • Schwer_Muta

I’m still bitter over not getting Growlanser VI., I wouldn’t hold my breath for this coming over either.

  • Kunio_kun

This will never happen in the U.S.
Just read Game Informer’s interview with VP Tom Pivnicny in issue no.216, he makes Atlus U.S.A. sound like a bunch of sell-outs… From his statement about profit margins on handheld titles to the final paragraph concerning money and growth it is evident that we will not see Urushihara’s work again in the West unless he creates a surefire hit for a home console. It’s just a shame that third-party publishers are being cockblocked from getting the license on the series…
