Wipeout 2048 For NGP Compatible With PS3′s Wipeout HD Fury For Multiplayer

By Ishaan . June 2, 2011 . 10:35am

The upcoming Wipeout game in development for the NGP isn’t a port of an older title, says the game’s director, Stu Tilley. Titled Wipeout 2048, it’s a new game with 10 new tracks and 20 new ships, and is built specifically for the NGP.

Wipeout 2048 will have three control modes: touch and tilt control, the classic Wipeout controls, and a new control configuration called “Racer” that’s meant to ease newcomers into the game. The game will also have voice-activated features, although, whether or not these are related to the “Racer” configuration is unknown.

It also has an amusing “glory moment” feature. When you’re playing against other people, at the end of a race, the victor’s NGP camera will take a still photo or video of them and send it to all the other players, to allow for a bit of gloating.

Finally, Wipeout 2048 will also be compatible with Wipeout HD Fury on the PlayStation 3 for cross-platform play. Eight players will be able to play together this way in any configuration they like (eg; one PS3 and seven NGPs, or three and four etc.) online.

Graphics look pretty good, about halfway between an original Xbox and a 360. I’m still afraid about how long the battery will last with this kind of performance.

And 20 new ships? Since when did Wipeout have so many teams?

    • Code

It might be a case of the 20 new ships being alternate models from each team, similar to how Fury added more ships; but it was really just adding an alternate selections from the teams.

Maybe a few of these companies split off into their own separate entities again. I like how Wipeout has always had that little bit of backstory for every manufacturer, with all the politics and scandalous practises and whatnot.

    A new Wipeout title?

Oh jeeze, between that and Uncharted, I may just have to grab a NGP at launch.

If Wipeout 2048 is a launch title then the NGP already has a better launch line up than the 3DS by far :P.

Basically Nintendo dropped the ball not releasing some of those cool games of theirs right away.

    rar, looks pretty nice owo; Although I was never much into Wipeout, I always admired the aesthetics of the series, and eventually broke down and picked up HD/Fury last December, and ended up really, really, enjoying it a lot owo;

Also cross compatibility with HD/Fury is a really nice touch, the way companies are getting crafty with being able to work new games to be compatible even with older games (even if it’ll probably take a fair amount of patching) really is impressing me owo; @Ishaan: Maybe there is even more hope for single DS/3DS Pokemon transfer after all >w<'

I replied to your Pokemon post in the other thread!

As for this… It does look nice, but I kind of…don’t like the look of the tracks. They look kind of muddy and gritty and brown. I’m so used to all the dazzling colours and bloom and glowing lights everywhere…that really “clean” look that Wipeout is known for.

      • malek86

It doesn’t look much different from the old Wipeouts to me. The newer ones were a bit too glowing and lighty. Consider this one a… return to form.

      • Code

Yeah I kind of know what you mean, but perhaps they are trying to go for a different look to separate HD/Fury and 2048 tracks(?) although judging from the screenshots, it might be shinier come closer to release >w<

    • mikanko

That and a decided lack of a Wipe Out girl to compete with Reiko.

I hope developers can follow this trend. This is why I never bought games on PSP that I already owned on PS3 (like ModNation)

Hmm odd I never gotten into these futuristic racers aside from Fzero GX.  I usually complain there’s never much arcade racers then here I am passing on them left and right.
There’s not much Vita games I want to play but this looks like an early racer of choice for me.

  • ManaKnight

I absolutely love Wipeout.  A definite must purchase for me at launch.

  • MarkMario

I would make a troll face at the end of the race.
