Dragon’s Crown Is A 4-Player Co-Op Game By Vanillaware [Update]

By Ishaan . June 7, 2011 . 7:41pm

Ignition Entertainment are publishing Vanillaware’s next game, Dragon Crown, on the PlayStation 3 and PSVita. Both versions of the game will interact with each other in some way, Ignition revealed today, but they didn’t go into the specifics of how.

Dragon’s Crown is a 4-player online cooperative game, although you can play it by yourself, too. The game will have six different character classes, each of which you can customize. Here’s a look at some character artwork. Ignition say “six classes,” but there are eight characters here.

Wizard:                                Sorcerer:

Fighter:                                Elf:

Dwarf:                                Amazon:

Knight:                                Thief:

Ignition say Dragon’s Crown will have a “nearly endless online adventure”. Your mission in the game is to discover the secret behind some sort of ancient dragon threatening the world. You’ll have to delve into dungeons, find treasure, and strengthen your character.

Ignition have Dragon’s Crown planned for a 2012 release.

Update: Added character artwork.

  • The art style and sound direction is nice.

    • blah blah

Have we heard anything from it yet?

  • Just absolutely stunning, like all Vanillaware games.
    Already lining up co-op partners!

  • Dam shame this is only on PS3 and Vita. Everyone should be able to play this game. Also the need all the sales they can get so why not multiplate it.

    • PersonaBull

I’m actually pretty glad Vanillaware is making stuff for Sony again. Muramasa ended up limited in a couple ways by being on the Wii. I think the audience for Vanillaware games is much more established on Sony consoles.

      • Shadow_Raskolnik

The main reason why Muramasa felt so limited was because Vanillaware was on a strict deadline and had to finish the game without incorporating everything they wanted into the game. It doesn’t matter what system the game is on, what does matter is the resources and time given to complete the game and Vanillaware didn’t have enough time to fully develop Muramasa the way Kamitani envisioned it.

As for Vanillaware’s audience I think the majority don’t care what system their games are on as long as the games are released in their area.

        • PersonaBull

I’d like to note that my reply to was a comment saying it was a “Dam shame this is only on PS3 and Vita.” I was replying with what I thought meant “It’s most certainly not a shame. Rather, it’s probably beneficial for Vanillaware to utilize their budget on a single company’s platforms, especially with an established background of games on said company’s platforms.” I’m in no way trying to suggest better hardware makes a better game (I’m actually a pretty avid handheld gamer), I’m merely trying to say that I believe Sony is an excellent choice for Vanillaware to develop on by a financial standpoint.

I actually agreed with the idea for Muramasa to be ported to the 3DS some months back, also.

    • HarryHodd

It’s on a home console and handheld. Everybody this way.

  • Buew. Tea. Full

  • urbanscholar

This is cool and everything but man is it hard to refrain from making T & A jokes right now. Fan service to it’s max

    • Ladius

I think that even if the character design is obviously Japanese the archetypes on which the characters are based are as western as they could be, and even the fanservice is somewhat appropriate in that classic heroic fantasy context. The amazon is really reminiscent of tons of western fantasy artworks from mid ’70s to ’90s.

I agree with you regarding that sorceress, though XD

  • z_merquise

Dios Mio!! Those screenshots! Now I need to wait till I got back home to watch the trailer.

2D Side-scrolling beat-em-up (my favorite genre back in the old arcade days) in beautiful high-def 2D developed by Vanillaware! And it’s also in PS3! Wow, just wow! You have my support, Vanillaware!

(oh and let me repost this)
    Useless trivia:
Don’t you know George Kamitani used to work at Capcom back in the 90’s? He was the director and one of the main game designer for Capcom’s Dungeons and Dragons arcade game (the first one. Not sure about the sequel though).

Okay, so after watching the trailer. . . man, I gotta say it’s beautiful. The game made me excited for PS Vita but after confirming this game to the PS3, I think I’ll get the PS3 instead. Let’s hope this game also had “transfarring” like the HD Metal Gear remakes had because playing this game when you’re not at home could be awesome too.

    • Not useless at all, in fact I didn’t know and it makes perfect sense now!

  • Makender

Simply beautiful. Now if I can round up my old Gauntlet crew for this it’ll be absolutely perfect.

  • It looks great (as expected from Vanillaware), but Ignition…

  • Guest

    Hellooooooooooooooooo Sorceress O_o

  • Exkaiser

…Could they zoom the camera out a bit? All the shots of it so far have looked really cramped.

  • This game looks beautiful. Great artwork, many classes, and Co-op.

I hope I wasn’t the only one that got a giggle at how…. bouncy, the sorceress is. I’ll still play her or the Elf.

  • mirumu

This is giving me Golden Axe flashbacks. Not the GA remake, but original. A lot of fun back in the day. Count me in on this one.

    • Boris_Althema

      My thoughts exactly.

  • fuzzy_hobo

The Amazon is…terrifying. I might need comfort from the Sorceress.

    • Mind if I join you?

Though, it is refreshing to see a different look for a female in a game. How many Ripped Females do you see?

      • raymk

Yeah I have to agree here we don’t see many beastly females.  I don’t know why games are afraid to use amazons,I mean they can be big and look good to.

    • SetzerGabbiani

      I’d hit…both.

  • I’m scared. Definitely scared by the Amazon.

    • She can crack your face with just her abs!

    • urbanscholar

      “Death by Snu-snu!”

  • Hmhm, I’m really loving the Amazon and the Sorceress~
That’s eventually enough reason for me to buy this, but naturally the other points are great too. :P

    • theworldofnoboundries

Hell the Amazon is even bulkier than myself lol.

  • Shadow_Raskolnik

Sold. I don’t care if Ignition does mangle the localization (but judging from what I’ve read so far it doesn’t seem like this will be a very story-driven game so maybe it’ll turn out alright) this game reminds me so much of those old arcade games I use to play with alongside my cousins and friends back when I was a child.

  • Code

    Looks busty!

  • TenRX

    *boing boing boing*
    Day 1 purchase :)

  • Love the arts/design/graphics of the maps and enemies, but i dont like the arts/design/graphics of the characters :(

Even if generic classes, they could had made something a bit more creative on their designs

    • Ladius

They’re trying to adhere to the classical Dungeons&Dragons archetypes, I fear that being too creative would defy their purpose.

      • Yeah, still, i dont feel the characters suit everything else very well… they kind of look out of place, at least for me

        • raymk

I know this is an opinion but what?  Must not have had much sleep since the nintendo reveal I assume >_>.

          • What do you mean with what? I just dont like the designs, they look too big too… I think i would had prefered for them to go the odin sphere/muramasa/grand knights road with smaller size playeable characters.

Anyhow, its not like i wont buy it because of that

  • AzureNova

Sorceress for the win!!! >_< Hnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggggggg

    • Doesn’t the Amazon have big enough boobs for you as well?

      • The problem is, that EVERYTHING on her is rather well developed, besides her tiny head, so you don’t really notice the massiveness of her breasts. ;>

        • Haha true :P

        • Yu_TheKing

Her breasts weren’t the first thing to stand out to me, more of her diesel body! (which isn’t a good thing imo)

  • Aoshi00

Vanillaware certainly knows how to do sexy, even better than Kongiku the fox in Muramasa :), I guess the music would be done by Sakimoto again?

4-player online co-op is great for a beat em up, what Scott Pilgrim was sorely lacking..  wonder if PS Vita would also sport trophies connecting to your PS3, but great artwork like that definitely want to play on the big TV.

    • PersonaBull

It never actually said the co-op was online. I was thinking the same thing, though. I really can’t see them not taking this online. Scott Pilgrim did pretty well, but was definitely limited in that respect (I never got far, since a lot of my friends live a couple states away most of the year).
edIt:nevermind~ Ishaan answered me already, and it is online co-op<3

I'm glad this is available for the PS3, though, since I don't see myself getting a Vita immediately.

      • Shadow_Raskolnik

I didn’t see myself getting a PS Vita early on as well, but this game and Project: Gravity have both sold me onto the system.

      • Aoshi00

I’ve beat Scott Pilgrim like twice on my own, still haven’t beat w/ all 4 chars yet and the Knives DLC, it just got a bit boring playing on your own over and over, but one time I had a friend over and played w/ him and it was much more fun..  games like this definitely needs co-op like Final Fight..

I was thinking this is a must get for Vita, but if it’s on console all the better, since Vanillaware’s artwork is so detailed.. I’m very glad it’s a beat ’em up since I didn’t like Odin Sphere too much (too hard for me and I don’t like the spherical stages), or the upcoming Grand Knight History, I loved Muramasa though and got most of the endings..

        • PersonaBull

Odin Sphere is my favorite game, haha. I’m waiting to see what the differences are between the Vita and PS3 versions are, honestly. I’m wondering how they will market it to get people two buy the same game twice, you know? I can’t wait for more information on the differences and interactions between versions~

I’m happy to see Vanillaware making all kinds of battle systems, though. Honestly, I’m at the point where I wouldn’t want a sequel to Odin Sphere, just because I’m that biased towards it. Getting to see the lovely artwork in so many new ways is pretty exciting.

  • mumakurau

This is gonna be the breast game ever!

  • leadintea

    That is one lucky skeleton…

  • PersonaBull

This and Grand Knights History are just making life look pretty wonderful for me right now <3 Also, that Sorceress was pretty ridiculous. Vanillaware co-op beat-em-up is just…I knew I saw some Vanillaware somewhere in Sony's thing! One thing I'm wondering, though: Can you go online for the co-op? If the co-op isn't online it'll be a pretty big negative for me, honestly.

    • Yes, you can! Sorry, I thought was clear in the post, but yea, it’s online co-op. I updated the post to make it clearer. :)

      • PersonaBull

Excellent news~<3 I was going with the assumption and halfway through my post I realized it never actually said "online." Glad to know! This is definitely at the top of my list of games to get next Spring then.

  • woo so amazing!! absolutely buy it!

  • midgard229

wish the dudes looked a bit cooler. the sorceress is hot and i like the elf. so ima be the elf lol, and fiance can be the sorceress :D

    • ninjaonizuka

the boys looked kinda bad to me butt he wizard looks kool

      • Darkrise

I would say he’s the most decent looking male character in this. =/

    • Scallion

       What are you talking about?
When I’m tired of looking at booty in single player, I’m going for the dwarf.

  • Man, it certain is a pretty looking game. Buying it for the PS3.

  • Vanillaware witches are always so delicious. xD

  • Ladius

It’s somewhat difficult to comment on a video when you’re trying to collect your drooling jaw from the ground at the same time, but…. day one.

  • Woah.
    That Sorceress has some JUGS.

    • Look at those fireballs.

    • Barrit

Who needs magic when she can just spin around and clear the room. Those things are deadly.

    • PrinceHeir

seriously just look at 0:50 :D hell yeah dem boobs :P

the amazon looks buff as hell O_O

  • Covnam

Looks pretty good, though the game play looked a little “stuttery”. Hopefully they’ll smooth things out. Usually I’d play the wizard, but the sorcerer seems to have some appeal…
Odd that dwarf and elf seem to be character classes though

  • glemtvapen

The only game that really caught my attention in this year’s E3.
Reminds me a lot of Capcom’s arcade Dungeons & Dragons.

    One more thing…

  • ninjaonizuka

  • Letiumtide

So wait, let me get this straight. It’s looking for classic D&D style arcade game but it’s only co-op online!? You mean I cannot play this in the same room as somebody? that’s unbelievable if true… I am sick and tired of lack of 2-player games, I mean you can connect 4 controllers to most systems these days, why do most games not even allow 2 players!?

Also the art is atrocious, for those saying that the artwork is reminiscent of previous games in the genre, take a look at the artwork here:

    Gorgeous artwork with believable proportions.

    • raymk

Ok but that game was drawn by capcom no everything needs to look like that.  The art is great to me so i’m good.  I think your just mad about the online feature.

  • The amazon proportions are…interesting D:

  • doubleO7

Wow. Those girls have some pretty large thighs. Did they hire Chun-Li’s character designer or something?

  • superdry

Vanillaware takes a long time between games, but each game is amazing…even the bizarre DS game Kumatanchi.

This looks good…err..amazing – Princess Crown meets Guardian Heroes?  Sign me up.

  • RagnaXBL

    Day1 buy for me

  • Barrit

Never played a game from Vanillaware, but this is a really pretty game. Looking forward to seeing more on this game!

  • RagnaXBL

I will buy a PSV just for this

  • Hoooly.

Damn straight thats an amazon. O_O

  • IceRomancer

I like the look of the wizard hopefully he’s prety useful and can cast spells fast.

  • vrakanox

Everyone’s obsessing over the sorcerers but the wizard is a total badass! This game looks awesome.

  • godmars

So the 360 gets Guardian Heroes while the PS3/Vita get this.

(know its old, but I had to use it just once :p )

    • HistorysGreatestMonster

Sega still haven’t completely shut the door on a PS3 version of Guardian Heroes. They’re gauging interest right now and doing polls.

  • alundra311

    If I had a PS3, I’d day 1, 2, and 3 this for the boobies.

  • Testsubject909

DAT ASS! Nnnggh… Oh and. DAT GAME! NNnnggghhh… Day 1 by the way.

  • Learii

wow 4 co-op like dongeon hunters great  i can’t wait

  • Looks a hell of a lot like Capcom’s Dungeons & Dragons games, Tower of Doom and Shadow Over Mystara. And by extension, Nexon’s Dungeon Fighter Online.

  • HarryHodd

Love the Elf and Wizard. Sorceress and Amazon are also awesome. So nice this is ready announced for the west.

  • Looks good so far.
Hey SEGA, hire these guys for the next Golden Axe or Streets of Rage, will you?

I wonder how much of Kamitani’s foot fetish will sneek into this game.

  • Darkrise

    Must. Resist. Making fanservice joke.

    Sorceress all the way.

  • CoolChibi

Eh, I find the character designs too extraneous, bordering on caricature… I liked they’re work in Princess Crown, Odin Sphere, and Muramasa better. But, I’ll still play the game regardless.

    • PersonaBull

Do you not remember Raijin from Muramasa? :P I think it’s because of that game that I’m not too surprised about the character art of Dragon’s Crown. But, honestly, the characters of Odin Sphere were not all that “proportionately correct.” The Queen of the Netherworld had just as ridiculous a chest as the Sorceress, and really it seemed like the only ones with ‘proper’ proportions were the girls of that game otherwise.

Really, I think Dragon’s Crown is just being a bit more obvious about it, haha.

  • I cried….

  • Scallion

If it plays like a super-gorgeous D&D Shadows of Mystara dungeon crawl…

Kamitani *did* work on the Capcom D&D games.
    Oh, god.

    • Scallion

      That Ass.

  • mikanko

Proportions are a little ridiculous, even for Vanillaware whose art does tend to defy realistic proportions regularly.  Definitely prefer character art from Princess Crown and Odinsphere a bit more, but I still like it.

Since this is going to be level up your own character/dungeon crawler fare, I doubt there’ll be as much story text for Ignition to butcher as they did with Muramasa.

  • Apache_Chief

  • wow bravo vanillaware you have just made all men around the world see white sticky stuff everywhere thanks to the sorceress =)

  • Characters got either enormous arms or enormous legs. Maybe they tried to channel the Super Saiyans and kinda failed halfway?

  • blah blah

I’m curious, does it have single player or not?

  • Masengan

Chi chi chi chi oopai, boing boing lol

  • So much win!

  • Looks fun, nice to see a sprite game like this at launch.  Is Ignition going to pick up Grand Knights History as well?

  • Locklear93

I can’t help but laugh at the Amazon, with that HUUUUUUUUUGE body… and the smallest head ever.

  • kupomogli

I love the attention to detail.  And by attention to detail I mean the sorceress’ huge rack.  And by the sorceress huge rack’, I mean the attention to detail.

I’m going to keep attacking with the sorceress even when no enemies are around or just walk around because this is one of the most awesome things I’ve seen in a video game ever.  I’ll try out the other characters and then go straight back to the sorceress.

  • Weretoad

The art is technically good (very detailed, colorful), but oh my god does it look generic.

Also, why the hell is there a list of professions or classes, with Elf and Dwarf thrown in?

Why not just call the Knight, Fighter, Thief, Wizard, Amazon, and Sorcerer “Human” and be done with it?

  • Kibbitz

Dwarf hammer too puny. Either I have fun and make one named Thor, or if barehanded is a feasible build, I name him Asura. Also, hurray for the closest thing to a spiritual sequel to Shadows over Mystara so far.

  • Gio32k

Wow..this looks AMAZING! Loved GrimGrimoire and Odin Sphere. I know know i’m gonna love this game too!

  • hush404

    Ummm… Tits anyone? 0_o

  • Hexen

I thought at first that was a supporter for her huge ….. and then i look closely and it was a skeleton.

  • xflame10

why couldn’t momohime have jugs like that?

  • xflame10

also it appears that the amazon class was created to go directly after chun li.

  • raikage

The sourcerer looks like a prostitute, but the wizard looks cool.

  • Lenne

looks great, the art reminds me of odinsphere.

  • Yu_TheKing

Mains: Elf and Wizard. Aside from that, this game is gonna be awesome! :3

  • Cmon, not one of you even brought up KING OF DRAGONS
    fighter, cleric, elf, wizard, dwarf

Seriously, sure the others come to mind, but only after King of Dragons!

  • Wonderful as always from Vanillaware!
Now the question is should I buy it on PS3 or PSP vita?

  • Is that a dwarf or Thor?

  • VisualData
