Nintendo Reveal The “Wii U,” New Controller Details Inside

By Ishaan . June 7, 2011 . 10:01am

“The new platform will provide deeper game experiences than what even the most passionate gamer has realized before, and it will offer wider appeal all gamers, wider
even than Wii,” said Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, at the company’s E3 2011 media briefing today.

Following this, Nintendo announced the Wii U. “It’s a system we will all enjoy together, but it’s tailor-made for you,” explained Nintendo of America president, Reggie Fils-Aime.

The new controller for the Wii U will be capable of a number of different functions, indicated by Nintendo’s trailer for the system. It will take the shape of a tablet-like device with the layout of a regular controller (yes, it has dual-analog sticks). It will also include a touchscreen, gyroscope, internal camera.

The screen won’t only be used for touch control. You will be able to play Wii U games either on your television or stream the visuals to the controller itself and play it there. However, it is not intended to be a standalone portable device.

A trailer for the device showed a number of interesting uses, such as using the controller as a traditional game pad, placing it on the floor to use as a golf ball stand, using it to aim a gun at the screen, using it to get readouts from Wii Fit while standing on the balance board, placing it on the palm of one hand and swiping it to fire shurikens and more.

Oh, and you might like this, although it wasn’t confirmed to be a game in development:

  • wtf lol O_O

Impressions after 5 secodns of staring

  • Draparde

i felt so relieved when i read that you can stream it to the tv… im back to being excited about it!

  • OMG! This is EPIC! WOoooooooooooooooooooooo NINTENDO!

  • Pretty much an Ipad competitor. Disappointed, Nintendo.

  • Zelda in HD looked amazing, hopefully it comes before 2014. I liked the controller for golf, but the other stuff just seemed so odd.

    Wii U, really :(

    • OneOkami

I’m willing to bet that Zelda portion was just a mock-up made for that video and not from an actual game prototype.

      • daizyujin

Ah it is 2001 all over again.  ;)

  • RupanIII

Watching the conference now.. 3DS stuff and Zelda were cool but.. man, talk about underwhelming. Wii Tablet? See your weight on the controller? So much for that return to hardcore hype -_-

    • daizyujin

haha, that was the one that made me laugh the most.  If I want to weigh myself I have a scale in the next room from my TV anyways.

  • Looks like my old wii would be put away once this comes out.

  • Sorry Nintendo, but I’m outta this one.

  • I’m still kinda confused. Is it a console, just a controller, a handheld, a tablet??!!!?

    • SlashZaku

There was a console next to the TV/screen but the ‘controller’ seems to be all the others (controller, handheld somewhat and tablet-esque).  Controller is big as hell though.  I mean, the screen should be nice for features for games you’re playing on TV but it’s…big.

      • Yeah, I paid attention to the screenshot showing Zelda, and there he is, tiny little brick beside the TV. They should have at least showed it properly, though.

        • SlashZaku

Seems they really want to push the controller first (or just keep that at the front).  Does Nintendo go to Gamescom?  I’m pretty sure they’re a no show at TGS so I guess we’ll have to wait for their own event or next E3 for more info.

    • I seriously think it’s a controller, but a handheld and tablet?

Nintendo has made me sad. It used to be good at things like this but when the Wii came out it was a dead drop for nintendo. now they have “Wii U”. They should have improved the 3DS more cause it really disappointed me. I wanted to get that 3DS for a while but after trying it out, I’m like Nintendo :P a GAZILLION TIMES

    • ZomaNeko

Oh my god, that was so confusing!! They only really showed the controller, the actual Wii U console unit is just barely shown in the background next to the TV in the bottom picture, but if you look on Kotaku they have a clearer picture of it.

    • Masengan

Same here, I had to see the picture of the thing to know… I’m really annoyed cause it didn’t impress me at all but now they have a Super Smash game coming for it and I’m gonna have to buy it…

Also I think this might be the year of weirdass console games, but at least we play the games and not the name. I’m scared to know the price of the controller… That will boost the price of the console for sure, I guess if people wanna play with me they better buy another controller because controllers ain’t getting any cheaper.

    • Guest

      It’s a Handheld Constrollerblet

  • AnimeRemix

I have mix feelings all around about this…=/

    Words just can’t explain…

  • Imagine what Cing could do with that thing. ;_;

I like the concept so much, but I can’t look forward to it much with most of my fav. developers dead or crippled. We saw how people accepted something like Elebits or Kororinpa. I doubt it will be different here.

  • Benjamin Laun

Has anybody else realized that the Wii U is basically just a giant DS, only not portable? Nintendo needs to stop milking the DS… I’m sorry to say that Nintendo has become the Apple of the gaming world and is no longer my favorite :(

  • Souji Tendou

OH MAI GAWD, what is that horrible looking thing? That……….. can’t be a controller right? Right guys? Please tell me I’m dreaming. :

    • It’s a tablet! And a controller! And a console! And…well, it’s the Frankenstein’s monster of video game controllers.

At least the Wii peripherals will work on the Wii U.

      • daizyujin

Reminds me of a Jaguar controller. Seriously though, it looks too busy.

    • thebanditking

Agreed, still I think I still hate the N64 pads the most, but this does not look comfortable.

  • I really like the idea behind the controller, it’s like a portable TV splitscreen, watching a match and playing at the same time? Awe~some~
Also, I like how you can stream with your TV!

    • malek86

“watching a match and playing at the same time? Awe~some~”

I can already do that, it’s called PSP/3DS/DS/any portable console.

And streaming will potentially introduce at least some lag. I’m not sure about how they are going to handle this, really. I hope they have some way to compensate.

      • I really like to play home console games more than handheld, which I couldn’t do before because I lack splitscreen TV, lol. I would say it’s still too early to judge as we’ve yet to see how it really works in full game, but it does have potential outside of how big it is.

        • Ren

And now you don’t even need a TV anymore to play a console :D

          • daizyujin

And thus it is no longer a console.  It is like having a mini OnLive cloud server in your living room.

  • malek86

Well, I didn’t want to buy one anyway, but Nintendo just made my choice easier.

Besides, looks like most tiles will be multiplatform. I already have a 360 and PS3. No point in this if you’re not a Nintendo fan, which I’m not much.

    • daizyujin

In addition who would want to sit there and play Ninja Gaiden 3 with that monstrosity?

  • dissapppppppoooooooooooinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnntttttttttttt:P

Nintendo has ruined it’s name already with the title “Wii U” <– Seriously that name isn't appealing ! PS Vita will DESTROY NINTENDOI mean come on how is a TABLET HARDCORE GAMING nintendo ruined my life with the 3DS, I hope I have enough ca$H to get a PS VITA

    • Ren

Oh my, I’m really sorry. I never knew a 3DS raped you. Now, show on the doll where it touched you.

But seriously, please stop with the fanboyism everyone. It only hurts the community. Being a troll is fun, but being friendly with everyone will make you far more credible and actually respectable.

      • malek86

        The doll, you say?

That reminds me of a SMBC comic.

      • showoff!

        • Ren

          Envy will kill you Jesus.

          • You get all high up only because Zero is loving you uh? xD

          • Ren

So this wasn’t about me huh. Then stop involving me. I know you two are having some sort of difficult time in that relationship, but you can’t blame everything on me. Go bother him, bothering me won’t help.

          • Tsun Ren is out xD

  • Souji Tendou

Guys, you know that there’s a console that came along with this controller right?

  • XypherCode

The new console and controller looks……….OUTSTANDING!!!!! *whew* i can’t get enough of it. Nintendo did it again!gotta save up some money :D

Guys before you say anything about the new console i recommend watching the entire press conference. You can’t just judge it by its looks ya know…

  • I can’t figure out how to classify it. It’s a couple steps backwards, a step forward and definitely a mile hike in a completely new and wrong direction…

  • eilegz

sure its a amazing new gameplay and gaming
experience but graphically its not a bringing a new gap between what we
got now (ps3 and xbox360) and what they are going to offer (wii u) the price will define alot, the
controller must be very expensive, the position of the analog its so
misplace, and all this still look like a prototype, not very refined but too many gameplay concept put it all together

  • i think for now they have just presented the controller, the console will be shown later

    • XypherCode

yeah but actually they were already using the new console. didn’t have much spotlight though unlike the controller :P

  • SlashZaku

Anyone else kind of ‘irked’ by the right analog stick being above the usual face buttons?

    • daizyujin

Very much so.  The placement of the buttons in general is a mess.  The d-pad being so low is a major pain to me on my 3DS and it looks worse here.  Not to mention I don’t want to use a circle pad.  That is fine on a handheld where you need to be able to close it, but not on a console.

  • I knew it was going to be a dissapointment as soon as they showed a guy walking in the hallway torwards the door to open it and find some casual playing it.

  • shy_mel

Oh my!  That person needs to gain some serious weight!

  • At one point I was like, wow that looks and sounds pretty neat, and then  I looked at the name, “Wii U” and I was like, are U trying to insult us, Wii U
    It’s like saying F…..nevermind

  • Samken

this looks so confusing, i’ll wait for more details about this. The Wii really did a revolution in the way you play games, this? As i can see, not so much.

  • RagnaXBL

That is the most repulsive, disgusting most foul creation/abomination i have ever seen

don’t even get me started on the name…

    • Guest

Nintendo Virtual Boy and Powerglove say hi (same family)

  • Suicunesol

That controller is massive. Can’t wait for Wii U Lite.

  • IceRomancer

Wow. Nintendo you better have some amazing games on it otherwise no ones gonna take it serious. I’m not impressed so far.

  • Aiddon

hmmm, let’s see tons of early cynicism, spellings of doom. Ya know what that means? This console is going to beat the crap out of its competition

  • karasuKumo

I’m interested but more interested in the Zelda game at the end of the trailer haha.

The drawing aspect to it is the same as any tablet -__- Y U no add clipping masks!

  • Shadow_Raskolnik

I think it’s interesting, but hopefully that is still just a prototype model. It seems a little too awkward so maybe we’ll see Nintendo improve the design as we get closer to it’s release date.

  • I’m actually Hyped for this console now. Now comes the time to start saving up. I hated the Wii’s flailing your arms around like a damn retard gimmick. Now that we’re back with the original “good” way to play games. I’ll give it a shot. However it did irk me that in some games you have to use the wiitard controller. I say “no to motion control.”

  • Exand

And the first time you get mad and throw the controller on the couch…

  • Guest

    NO U

  • I am actually satisfied in some ways.  From the rumors i was excited about the small screen interacting with the big screen like a HD DS.  Basically that Zelda demo is what I like to see from Wii U.
The controller looks really bulky but IGN apparently things it is comfortable I’ll have to trust them for now.

I just wish there was some exclusives because none of the ones shown impressed me but I have a feeling TGS and next E3 will do this console justice.

  • Guest

Ew, it looks like a Fischer Price toy.

  • daizyujin

Ah so the newest console is a two Wiis and an iPad duct taped together eh?  Seriously this is crazy.  Talk about a 180.  This thing is anything but simple.

The one thing though that gets me is that using a stylus means that jumping back from the buttons and touch screen will be a nightmare.  Seriously Nintendo there is something called a capacitive touch screen, use one!

  • Everyone always quick to hate .

  • PrinceHeir

hmm cannot wait to see other features of this badboy :P

  • darkfox1

Man this hate but no worries everyone’s gonna get one anyways including me.

    • By the time the killer app comes out…I doubt Id be interested in this device unfortunately.
