Silent Hill Collection To Include All New Voice Acting

By Ishaan . June 10, 2011 . 12:01pm

Konami announced the Silent Hill Collection package for the PlayStation 3 last week, which will include Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3, and have trophy support incorporated into it.

Silent Hill Collection will also have all-new voice acting, Konami revealed, directed by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (Major Kusanagai in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex).

The game is slated for release this fall.

Why? Was the original VA that bad?

    • MrRobbyM

Well, it’s nowhere near as bad as Chaos Wars, but it’s definitely not good.

    • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

Save for maybe the first game, which had a few interesting moments (“Huh? Radio? What’s going on with that radio?”), I’ve always thought the SH games had one of the more notable acting scenes, especially for their time. SH2 had great scenes and there was even one that almost had me bawling – well, choked-up is probably more accurate. SH3 and 4 were far from terrible in regards to the acting, so reading news about this is a bit baffling to me, but okay.

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

The original VA is part of the charm, if you ask me. Maybe they’ll be able to get most of the original VAs to reprise their roles.

Still can’t understand the weird decision to make it PS3 exclusive. Is it that SH titles don’t sell well on Xbox or was money involved? I’m assuming it’s the latter, but even if that is the case, why a SH HD collection, of all possibilities?

And why oh why couldn’t they include 1 and 4.

    • http://twitter.com/thesupersakura Kristina Wright

      I don’t think they included the original because I (think?) it’s already on the PSN store. I am upset they didn’t include The Room though, that one was my favorite. ;A;

      • neo_firenze

I get that SH1 wasn’t included, since it would have needed more of a graphical revamp than upscaling 2 and 3 to HD.  Though a true full HD remake of SH1 would be something I’d love (I really like Shattered Memories too, but that’s far from a faithful remake).

I personally can’t stand The Room and don’t miss it one bit!  But one possible explanation is that it wasn’t ever really a SH title at first, but was shoehorned into the series for its brand recognition.  Maybe the directors don’t truly accept it as connected to the other games?

        • Chow

They should’ve pulled a Dead Space Extraction on us and made a PS3 version of Shattered Memories Wii.  The PS2/PSP versions already proved that the game is manageable with a Dualshock-ish setup, for those that don’t have a Move.

          • http://twitter.com/sakurairomemori Alphabet Soup

OT a bit, but I liked Shattered Memories much better on the PSP then the Wii.  It was just easier not having to flail the Wiimote around to get monsters off of you.

On topic, I’m definitely interested in this HD pack since I liked 2 and loved 3 but never got to finish it.  Woulda liked 4 included too, though.

          • Chow

You’re right about that.  The motion controls in Shattered Memories (now that I’ve finally tried it out) were extremely clunky and uncomfortable to use.  But I say that about almost every Wii game.

          • gatotsu911

I found the motion controls in Shattered Memories irritating at first, but once I got used to them they became second-nature. Now I can’t imagine playing the game any other way.

There’s a reason why the Room and SH1 weren’t in the collection. It’s part of our Silent Hill interview….

        • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Oh. Oh. Looking forward to it! Who, specifically, did you interview, if I may ask? And when is it getting published?

I’m gonna take a wild guess and say it has something to do with the creators/people who originally worked on it.

          • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

No, no that’s not it, but I’ve said too much already so… I’m going to be quiet.

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Ok ok, I’ll just wait =P

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

I’ve seen that as a possible reason before, and it could be the case, but consider the TR collection, for instance: wasn’t Underworld already on the PS store when they released it? Different publishers, true, but a similar situation…

I’m not even asking for a HD remake of the first one, I just wanted it to be included =P Out of the “main” 4, I think it’s the best horror game. Maybe not my favorite, maybe not the best game overall, but genuinely creepy.

I also liked 4, but I only played it once. Gotta replay it sometime. The ghosts… The damn ghosts! *shiver*

    • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

I remember SH2 was on the original Xbox. In fact, it was the one that originally had the “Born from a Wish” scenario (PS2 didn’t get that part till SH2 become a greatest hits edition, iirc).

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

I know that 2, 3 and 4 were on the Xbox, I asked because of that too. This gen, we’ve only had Homecoming on the 360 (so far), so I was considering the possibility of previous SHs not selling well on Xbox, thus leading to this being exclusive…

        I don’t know, though!

        • http://twitter.com/Hunam85 Jonathan Diamond

Silent Hill 3 was only on the PC and PS2.  It never turned up on the Xbox for some reason whilst 2 and 4 did.

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Whaaa? Ok, so strange decisions are not a first when it comes to Silent Hill, I see.

            Thanks for pointing that out!

    • http://twitter.com/EdgeKun Ed Powell

This. Like others are saying, SH2 and 3 were both on original xbox. This remaining exclusive makes far less sense than say the ZOE collection being multi platform. (Not that I’m complaining Konami! D: )

      • MGSBigBoss

Silent Hill 3 Was the only PlayStation 2 Exclusive SH title of that Generation. Silent Hill 1 was PlayStation 1 Exclusive.

    • HistorysGreatestMonster

I’m actually more surprised that the Metal Gear and ZOE Collections were on 360, as well.

    • PrinceHeir

agree at least make an option to revert to new or old voices.

this is what i fear :(

not to mention why no SH4? can’t they also just put Silent Hill Shattered Memories and Silent Hill 1(as a voucher, similar to MGS1 voucher in the HD Collection)

that would have been one hell of a collection.

good thing they didn’t tampered the music.

since it’s Mary Elizabeth is doing the ADR i’ll keep an eye on this :P

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Yeah, maybe they’ll let us choose.

Wait, the MGS collection comes with a MGS voucher? That’s awesome! Even though I still have my copy…

        • PrinceHeir

          yup2

i already bought the PSN Version.

i might give it to someone here at siliconera :P

    • gatotsu911

The voice acting in the original games may have worked unintentionally, but between that and professional VA work I know which one I’d choose. BTW, M.E. McGlynn’s reportoire of ADR-directing work includes episodes of Cowboy Bebop and Naruto and the recent Resident Evil games.

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Maybe with better direction, the same actors would be able to do a better job. That’s what I hope for, at least. I’ve never seen dubbed Bebop, but I’ve heard praise for it, yeah.

Right now, though, without knowing who will voice who and how that will affect the way I view the game, I would choose the original VA, if given the option to do so (nostalgia’s a bitch).

But I’m completely open to replaying it with new voice acting, as long as it enhances the experience.

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

I read elsewhere that this would be a Vita game…is this true? Will this be available on the PS3/360 or just PS3? I’ll get it anyway, given the big SH fan that I am. And missing a good SH game ever since 3 (Silent Hill 4 was a mess, and even 0rigins was a better game than Silent Hill 4)

    • MGSBigBoss

Uh.. 0rigins was a good game even compared to SH1-3, I rather play 0rigins than SH2 TBPH… Not to mention Travis is a great character.

      • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

Silent Hill 2 was godly :o How come you say that? SH 3 was my favorite though. 0rigins was good but it was incredibly short. The game had potential to be greater and better, and I think it’s incredibly underrated while we’re on topic :P

        • HistorysGreatestMonster

Origins wasn’t bad but had an incredibly disappointing ending. Still like it way more than Homecoming, though.

      • http://twitter.com/safte7860 Bsaft

Origins was crap. There are no real Silent Hill games after SH4 period

  • http://twitter.com/thesupersakura Kristina Wright

Before I even clicked on the article I knew the director would be Mary Elizabeth!!

Knowing Mary Elizabeth McGlynn the new voice acting will be superb and won’t disappoint. I love her work musically, acting and her directing.

  • Trisagion

I can understand this decision since they’re upping the ante on the game’s textures, graphics and overall visuals.

If I recall correctly, the voice acting on the PS2 version was hindered a lot because of the technology at the time — which explains why characters take so long to “communicate” with each other in cutscenes (e.g. the long pauses between each sentences, which made their conversations very awkward), the voice acting was far from being bad to be honest.

I’d love if they re-did the voices with the original voice actors, though.

  • http://twitter.com/TheRyusui Ryusui

You know, the last time Konami meddled with the voicework in a rerelease, we got The Dracula X Chronicles.

Look, the new Dracula is awesome, but he really should’ve been saying the classic lines – or something close to them. The direct translation they used just sucks the soul out of the classic confrontation.

And the less said about The Twin Snakes, the better. They butchered some of the game’s best lines in that version.

All I can say is, I’m ambivalent about this. Except where Zone of the Enders 2 is involved. Really, just about anything they can do to that game’s voicework would be an improvement.

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

B-but Dingo and Nohman sound great T_T Even Ken! Even Leo!

Wait. I think I actually like ZOE 2′s voice work. So memorable, so over the top. Delicious.

      Carry on!

    • HistorysGreatestMonster

Mankind ill needs a savior such as you?

  • badmoogle

If it’s not broken why try to fix it???
    ….
I didn’t thought it was possible for this collection but Konami once again did their best to find a way to disappoint me.

    • http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=2704923 Buntar0

It is a bit of a stretch, but it reminds me of what George Lucas is doing to Star Wars.

      • HistorysGreatestMonster

So, Boba Fett will randomly appear in scenes and Vincent will shoot first.

  • hush404

McGlynn always seems to be heavily involved with anything audio related in Silent Hill. I know she works closely with Yamaoka on most of the games and it’s interesting to see her doing this, very kewl.

  • MarkMario

I kind of liked Silent Hill 3′s VA.

  • cj_iwakura

Silent Hill 2 & 3 had great voice acting if you ask me. Why fix what wasn’t broke?

    • gatotsu911

Are you serious? The voice acting in SH2 was a joke, and SH3′s was only marginally better.

  • Juuu

I’m okay with this, if they get most of the original actors to reprise their roles. For example, Heather had some awful, awkward-sounding delivery at a few points, but other scenes were handled so well. [Her return to the apartment comes to mind] I trust in Mary McGlynn though. Maybe she could reunite with Yamaoka and do a new song..? *sigh* we can dream!

  • http://profiles.google.com/cncgamefan brandon martin

Silent Hill’s pretty much Sony only, but It’s great that Mary(or Maria?) is temporarily joining them for this
