Sega’s Free-to-Play Spiral Knights MMO Is Up On Steam

By now, you’ve probably heard that Valve’s popular Steam service now supports free-to-play games. Included amongst the first batch of titles are Champions Online, Global Agenda, and a Sega-published MMO, titled Spiral Knights.

Spiral Knights is a Java-based game, played from a top-down perspective. You can form parties with up to three other players. I had a quick go at it with Laura this past week. We didn’t have the time to play for very long, but at first glance, I liked the visual style, which reminded me a little of the playfulness of Ragnarok Online.

Conveniently, the Steam version allows you to use your Steam account to play, so you won’t have to create a user account specifically for the game.

It’s a pretty neat little game.

You also get a TF2 hat for playing it, if you’re into the whole Hat Fortress thing.

  • Its not bad for the price, although it lacks depth and difficulty

    • Code

Just wait til you get later stages, the difficulty picks up quiet a bit!

      • Ive played some of the later stages… The difficulty picks up in a sense of ‘I dont have the gear required’, not in a ‘I better start playing better’ way…

  • Code

Been playing this off and on for a few months and have really enjoyed it, especially good if you get four players going, also really enjoy the look of the game. It does start out a little dry, but it starts to pick up by about 2-3 star areas >w<'

It’s basically a fun little “Diablo-lite”. A hack-n-slash clone with few character options, but entertaining enough to burn an hour or two with. Oh, and you get to customize your character’s armour colour, so feel free to name yourself Lord Bieber and strut around town in your hot pink sweater.

It a decent fun game. The only problem I find is that the combat seems a little wonky.

  • Been having fun with this one. It’s the “Zelda/Ys”-type MMO that has the exact play style I’ve been waiting for.

  • Boris_Althema

This game reminds me of Zelda when I first played it. Decent fun game.

I didn’t really like it – it may be influenced by Ys or Zelda, but lacks fun of the two. Its certain strong point is that it’s the only free to play MMO available on Mac…
maybe I should play it a little bit more though

I like the gameplay but I didn’t like the Mist usage which matched out is 100 and even thought it’s 100 Mist, you only get to play 40 mins to an hour if you’re a beginner. Because everything cost Mist, it sucks.
