Telltale Complete the Tales of Monkey Island On iPad, Episode 1 Goes Free

Arrr! Tales of Monkey Island on the iPad? That sounds rather convenient. Telltale Games released episodes 2 – 5 (the complete story) of the PC/WiiWare game on the iPad today, and to sweeten the deal, Episode 1 is free until July 22nd.

Each episode costs $6.99 in the U.S. and £3.99 in the U.K. Note that the iTunes release is titled Monkey Island Tales HD.

As much as I love classic adventure games such as Sam & Max, Indiana Jones, Maniac Mansion, and Monkey Island, I can never get into these telltale games.  I can’t stand the horrid looking graphics they have.  It ruins it for me.

I hate this game just because it has a “Tales of” in its name.
    How dare them?!

I don’t mind the graphics, but the games just have this empty feeling to them… at times even dull… the writing is seldom good enough, imo, and the end result feels like an 80s serialized cartoon of a beloved franchise..
Maybe the whole monthly release thing is an inhibitor to letting your passion truly shine…

While I was still able to enjoy these episodes, I agree with everything you said. The humor style is different and notably lazier. The 3D renderings are drastically uglier than the beautiful 2D art of the first three games. And the constant references to stuff from the prequels takes me out of the story and feels like bad pandering.

However, I’m still glad they made Tales. It’s 100 times better than Escape From Monkey Island, and many of the puzzles are clever (as they always are in Telltale games). It’s not like I could do better, and when you think about it, there was no way a new Monkey Island would hold up to the old ones. I don’t think even Ron Gilbert could do the old games justice.
