Batman: Arkham City’s Robin Design Inspired By Cage Fighters

Last month, Rocksteady Studios revealed what Robin looks like in Batman: Arkham City, sporting his new shaved head design. This look, reveals concept artist, Kan Muftic, was inspired by cage fighters.

"We wanted to create a Robin that players would identify as a contemporary character and move away from the traditional ‘Boy Wonder’ image that most people know,” Muftic conveyed through the Arkham City community forums. “Our vision of Robin is the one of a troubled young individual that is calm and introverted at times but very dangerous and aggressive if provoked.”

“The shaved head is inspired by cage fighters, because we thought that Robin might be doing that in his spare time to keep him on his toes,” Muftic elaborated. “Still, we kept all the classic trademarks of Robin’s appearance, such as the red and yellow colors of his outfit, the cape and the mask.We really hope that people will discover our Robin as one of their new favorite characters in the Batman universe. He is back and he means business.”

Along with his thoughts on the character, Muftic provided the concept art seen above. Robin is accessible in Arkham City’s challenge maps by pre-ordering the game from Best Buy. He comes with his own gadgets and special moves, two additional challenge maps, and a Red Robin skin.

  • “Hi, I’m Tim Drake. My defining feature is that I’m a great detective, and may surpass Batman in that area some day. I’m not as good at physical combat as the other Robins but I have cunning and the ability to analyze situations well on my side. So you’ll generally see me behind a group as their tactician, or chipping away at a headquarters’ inner defenses, as opposed to the front lines.

That is, when I’m not too busy CAGE FIGHTING DOOP DOOP”

Let’s take a witty little character and turn him into a generic mess of a brooding introverted but daaaangerous protagonist that has a darkness around him.

Good job making him into a generic character… Good job…

Still, rest of the game looks good.

  • …after countless “incidents” within the dark, secluded depths of the Bat Cave, Robin finally decided that something had to be done.

    • puchinri

…Is this in reference to the scaly undies and… Other related stuff? Stuff that Batman instigated~?

  • I’m sorry Robin can’t be Robin with a hair cut liked that. Then there is this statement. “Our vision of Robin is the one of a troubled young individual that is calm and introverted at times but very dangerous and aggressive if provoked.”
This seems to be Jason Todd the most hated Robin of all time. So they messed up on 2 areas design, and personality.

  • Xeahnort

Much, much better design and more bad-ass than previous Robins.

  • I like Robin as the ‘Boy Wonder’ though, that was always sort of his appeal in my eyes. I like him as a sidekick, not some beefy guy that’s stepping on Batman’s toes.

    • Crimson_Cloud

Agreed. They changed him to a… ”man wonder”. Seriously it’s not that I don’t like this look but, it’s just not Robin anymore for me.

    • SolidusSnake

Agreed, he looks like some lame Eminem wannabe. If they wanted a badass Robin maybe they should have just used Nightwing.

      • I dunno, even Nightwing is pretty witty and loves his banter. That’s just the trademark of both Dick and Tim. This one is like a Damian Wayne-meets-Jason Todd kind of affair.

        • SolidusSnake

Good point, although the visual style of Nightwing probably would have been a good fit for what they’re going for.

Isn’t having a dark, troubled Robin kind of missing the point? I thought Robin was supposed to be a lighthearted happy go lucky guy to balance out the dark, troubled Batman. Hell come to think of it even Damian likes to crack a few jokes when he isn’t busy cutting peoples’ heads off and generally being an asshole. Definitely not calm or introverted.

          • puchinri

I think Jason was a dark, troubled Robin, but he was still very much so a kid and was pretty witty (and still is). It’s the balance of troubled, snarky and happy-go-lucky between each Robin that I enjoy and never just being one of those traits. But yeah, definitely agree with you.

        • puchinri

Damian meets Jason and some other random dude… Even Jason has his fair share of banter and snark at least (and Damian is just a “lovable” asshole). At the core of this character, he seems close but really doesn’t sound like either.

I don’t like this Robin. =( It’s like Batman Forever all over again. Shaved head and troubled life? That’s not Jason Todd Robin, that’s Chris O’Donnel Robin. Just add the rubber nipples and your all set.

The Robin I remember and like the most is TAS Dick Grayson Robin. He ran his mouth and was obnoxious when in costume, but that was his calling card – his cockiness often breaks the bad guys’ focus and was great when paired up with Batman’s dark, cool and collected mindset.

This cage fighter Robin… I can only imagine Bman and Birdboy arguing with both characters played by Christian Bale. They’re supposed to be the Dynamic Duo, not the Monotonous, rage-induced, “I’m darker than what my partner will ever be” duo.

  • Hmmm, he looks much better with the hood than without it….though they still should change the hair back to regular Robin because the clean shaved look doesn’t suit Robin at ALL. That or they can just have an alternate Red Robin suit to unlock.

But I gotta say, I really REALLY hate these store related DLC. Worst thing about this generation by far.

    • Exkaiser

They already mentioned that there will be a Red Robin outfit to go along with it in a previous article.

      • Ahh yes, it kinda slipped outta my mind. Much thanks for telling me!

  • raikage

    He looks kinda old…

  • BGMcDF

So their plan to make him likable is to just not make him Robin? There’s a great number of reasons why Robin is how he is in the DCU, and the purpose he serves in both the narrative and thematically was substantial. This just strikes me of the ’90s movement to make characters hipper and edgier.

I’ll reserve judgment until I actually play the game, but this very much just seems like a new character with a Robin skin.

    • puchinri

At least even in the 90s, Robin was still a fun and not so dark character all the time (TAS~?).

      • BGMcDF

The comment was in approach, not so much specific to the character. The ’90s was generally panned in comics, not universally. This doesn’t include TAS, which was lovely.

        • puchinri

Ahh, I see. That’s true. And I still miss TAS to this day.

  • puchinri

It kind of feels like they took the troubled part from Robin, but just added other stuff that they want/like in a character and decided to throw Robin’s colors (and name) on him and call it a day. Even Catwoman faired better than this, and she’s running around with her outfit mostly unzipped. (And not even wearing the goggles.)

“You’re Batman in your hovercraft, stinking like Christmas.”
    And I must weep, knowing lines like this probably won’t be uttered by Robin in the game. ;u;

  • Robin’s head is also inspired by Starkiller from The Force Unleashed, Cole from Infamous, and that guy on all the Mass Effect covers (we all know Shepard is a semi-Asian-looking woman).

  • Guest

They should do a Gatchaman crossover

  • Look guy, we’ve already killed off one gritty Robin.  We don’t need another.

  • um. . . why not use Nightwing?

  • Kris

I still think they could have just taken Ninja Theory’s Dante and put him in tights. That would have made a fine Arkham City Robin.

  • ZBaksh386

Design wise, he looks ok since this would be how robin would look like in Nolan’s batverse. Plus Nolan’s batman would never take a young kid and make him robin because its hard to imagine him letting a kid run around as a crimefighter. so if robin were to appear  he would be over 18.

I think this robin is either Jason todd, the second robin who died and came back as red hood or Tim Drake the third robin who later became Red Robin. There is plenty of wiggle room with both of them to include the cage fighting bit but it seems more natural with Jason todd.
