When Things Get Lovey-Dovey, Rune Factory 4 Zooms In On The Action

By Ishaan . July 15, 2011 . 11:35am

Rune Factory 4 makes a few significant changes to the game’s dating system. Instead of falling in love and getting married right away, you’re allowed to be girlfriend and boyfriend before tying the knot. During this stage, you can spend time with your lover, and the Doki Doki Zoom system comes into play.

“Doki-doki” is the Japanese sound effect for your heart beating. The Doki Doki Zoom feature kicks in during a romantic scene when you and partner grow closer, so you can get a better look at them.

Don’t go getting the wrong idea though; Doki Doki Zoom scenes aren’t naughty. Judging by screenshots, they’re more innocent and romantic, such as while fishing together, or playing the piano or even talking. Above is one such scene with Margaret, and below, you have Vishnal with the female protagonist, Frey.

  • Shinji Kazuya

Very nice. Finally some nice Nintendo 3DS games that aren’t remakes are surfing up!

    • Seriously! And the character designs are so lovely. I don’t think they could make a cuter game if they tried.

      • AzureNova

        And then they make a Ro-Kyu-Bu! game……

    • This and Senran Kagura seem to occupy my 3DS wishlist for now. And maybe Tales of the Abyss. Other than that… I can’t find a lot of 3DS game I really want. I’m cautious as to not repeat the same mistake I made when I bought my Wii: I didn’t research the software library sufficiently.

    • SeventhEvening

I love the 3DS hardware, but I can’t justify the purchase as long as Rune Factory and Senran Kagura are the only titles I want for it. Out of that massive list we saw of games that were going to come onto the 3DS after release, most of the non-remakes have been canceled.

      • Tom_Phoenix

That’s actually not true. Only four 3DS titles have been cancelled so far. That said, most of the titles have been delayed (although I don’t think this is unique to non-remakes, since OoT and Abyss were also delayed).

      • Shinji Kazuya

So far the only game I’m interested that’s coming ta here in the next few months is Tales of the Abyss. That’s why I didn’t bought a 3DS yet. Tales of the Abyss comes out on November; that’s when I’ll buy one.

      • If you mean the third-party list, it didn’t refer to launch games. All it was is publishers going, “We’re bringing XX and YY and ZZ to 3DS at some point.” I mean, stuff like Final Fantasy and Persona isn’t going to hit at launch, you know? :)

The same goes for that Vita list. Everyone’s excited because they think ALL those publishers are going to be there day one with big huge games to support it. That isn’t going to happen at all. Both systems are going to get some fantastic games, but it’s going to take time for those to show up in both cases.

        • Exkaiser

I think it’s especially odd how people are so intensely supporting Vita on day one based only on a list of publishers (and a smaller list of confirmed titles like Uncharted) and not a list of games- as the 3DS got.

A large faction seems to believe that the Vita will blow the 3DS out of the water on day one with fifty million AAA titles, but it’ll get off to just as slow of a start. Unless Konami puts out, like, Metal Gear Ac!d 3 on day one, then Nintendo is finished. Finished!

Ultimately, I think the 3DS/Vita race will just be a slightly closer repeat of the DS/PSP one.

(Actually, I think an Ac!d 3 would be a good fit for the 3DS, since they were already playing with stereoscopic 3D in Ac!d 2, and the 3DS is built for that…)

          • PSV doesn’t have region-lock though. That’s one big advantage it has over 3DS, from my perspective, because it effectively means that the software library will consist of games from both East (mainly Japan) and West (mostly US). I can certainly imagine PSV being really popular with importers.

3DS, on the other hand, limits its library to strictly regional ones. I do have interest in the hardware, and I know it can promise interesting software in the future. However, I feel like it’s still trying to maintain the gap between the East and West gaming communities, and that’s honestly not something I like to see. Regional difference (like preferences) is a major factor to be considered when you do business, but if they don’t push the boundary a little at a time to let regional softwares mingle, the split isn’t gonna go anywhere.

          • Exkaiser

I suppose, but that doesn’t mean anything without any out-of-region games to play. I would be more excited about the PSV being region-free if there were some import-only titles to be excited about- at this juncture it is a moot point. It’s possible it could have a wide array of import games, as the PSP before it did, or it could have two import titles of worth, like the Gamecube. Likely the former, but at this time you never know. The life of the PSV could be weird and twisted.

But at the same time, I’m just curious about why someone would get so excited over a piece of hardware more than the software on it. I made my 3DS purchase based on the software that was in development for it, and I suppose I figured most gamers made similar hardware judgements.

And, well, to my knowledge no region lock has ever held forever. So sayeth my PS2 and Gamecube, and many a neutered SNES. So, I can’t say the region lock on the 3DS bothers me in the slightest, personally, despite being a semi-regular importer.

        • SeventhEvening

Well I was excited about the prospect of a portable Saint’s Row, but it was cancelled. The 3DS Assassin’s Creed was also canceled. Virtually none of those third party titles that were on the list have actually materialized with any screenshots. I believe the big exceptions are what Capcom is bringing to the table, but Mercenaries has the ridiculous single save state and they keep mentioning that Legends could get canceled if Prototype doesn’t sell well, which isn’t exactly inspiring confidence.

I was really hyped up for the 3DS because of that list, and I knew the titles wouldn’t all be day one or anything, but it just seems like very few resources have actually come from that list and many developers seem less enthusiastic about the system then they were before it was launched.

I don’t mean to sound like I’m pumping my arms in excitement over the Vita and I’m slamming the 3DS. I was incredibly enthusiastic about the 3DS, but I couldn’t justify buying the console just for Nintendogs and BlazBlue. Then I discovered the region-locking (half my DS games are Japanese and half are english) and I’m just losing steam. Everyone kept saying the Wii would get more and more titles too, but it really had a woefully low number of 3rd party titles that were worth buying a system over, and most of the ones that WERE awesome never came to the US.

The Vita may very well be the same, but at least most of the first party stuff announced are new games and not ports. I’m excited about it, especially since a sony rep said there “shouldn’t be a region lock” (I wish he said it more confidently). Unless the launch titles are completely amazing, I’ll wait several months on the Vita too. I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt rather than placing my chips on it.

Also sorry, this response is quite long.

        • I can wait; I’m in no rush with new releases. Two of the things I learned from console purchases is that:
          – It’s more advantageous to buy somewhat late, particularly at a point where the flaws are already fixed with updates and re-designs. Not to mention the price drop.
          – The software library needs time to build up. By the time it becomes decent, the hardware might (hopefully) be already on “firm ground”.

As excited as I am about PSV, I’m definitely gonna wait. It does mean that I’ll be playing the games rather late, but I suppose that’s the trade-off for less price and more stability.

  • malek86

This game looks a little… bright.

    • SeventhEvening

I agree. I think it is because I’m so used to staring at brown and grey all generation…

      • FireCouch

It’s not even that.  It’s the fact that the game looks like they took the brightness knob and turned it all the way up.  Color and brightness are two different things.

    • M’iau M’iaut

That’s just your excitement for this game building.

      • malek86

You mean, my frothing demand for this game increases?

        • M’iau M’iaut

Or your blood soaring to get some of it. Ya, something like that.

  • AdrianHeng

This is the reason I’ve been waiting for to get the 3DS (RF4 in general). It hasn’t exactly had a fantastic launch library, but if they localize this, I’ll seriously be saving up every penny I have for a 3DS. Assuming, of course, they intend to localize the title.

  • nyoron

I sure hope this gets localized, my 3DS needs food badly.

I think I like the doki doki zoom mode in Galgun better though.

  • I’d probably play it only for the dating system.

  • Hmm~ :3
The screenshots aren’t naughty, but picture #3 and #4 seem rather… intimate, if the text is anything to go by. Especially #3.

    • nyoron

Outside, in broad daylight? How bold…

      • Well, when I said “#3 and #4”, it’s actually the fourth and fifth pictures, since the file numbering starts at 0. As for what the text is saying in those pictures…

        #3: Vishnal: “I want to touch…” (Alternatively: “I want to hold you…”)
#4: Margaret: “Can you grip/grab (it) with your hand?” (Alternatively: “Can you… hold my hand?”)

So… yeah. I’m fairly sure these are just taken out of context to be humorous, but I think Neverland made these shots intentionally. So much for “no naughtiness” for this post (as per RSS feed description), Ishaan. :3

        • M’iau M’iaut

So in other words the hearts aren’t the only thing going doki doki.

          • JustaGenericUser

            Oh, you.

  • M’iau M’iaut

I see twintails! No you cant have them, I called them first.

    • Aww… Why not? Can’t we share? She’s got, like, two of them!

    • Zero_Destiny

Isn’t she the game’s Heroine though? I don’t think you can romance her. Although I guess you can make her forever alone so no one else can have her. hehehehehe

      • s…so evil… ;__;

        • Zero_Destiny

Nah. She may not ever know it but there’s someone who loves her. We may be in other worlds (her in the game and me in the Real World) but she’ll never be totally alone. I’ll always be there to watch over her and be with her. We’ll be together forever. :D

          • theworldofnoboundries

I love ur word lol which is almost the same with what my cousin tell himself why playing Love Plus lol.

          • In other words, stalking. ^^

      • M’iau M’iaut

Long as I get her knocked up she will be honor bound to me forever.

        • Zero_Destiny

          But you’ll be playing as her so unless there’s a way to knock yourself up . . . I’m stopping now . . . T_T

          • Um, IIRC, if you play as the guy, the girl becomes NPC and vice-versa? at least i think it’s only logical to let the other main become a viable partner.

    • When it ic coms to twin tails, I’d be willing to bet my soul in a battle for them! Sir! If you want them, you’ll have to get through me!

      • M’iau M’iaut

Go pester Tousaka Rin, I understand she pretty pissed off and available with Shiro macking his way though every female involved in the Grail War.

        Leave this one for me.

      • Shinji Kazuya

Hmmmm… Twin tails… HHMMMMM!!! Sorry, but I will join this battle royale!
I can’t contain my twin tails spirit!!! Black Rock Shooter twin tails are awsome!

        • M’iau M’iaut

Fine go have all the Black Rock Shooter tails you want. I don’t see any here. But while we are on the subject of TTs, I draft Kooh into my stable of waifu/concubine/girlfriend by the hour candidates.

  • Hmm, I guess I was right in my theory that they’d make use of the 3DS’ capabilities for the “Doki Doki Zoom”, but I was thinking more in  the lines of seeing character models similar to the titles of Frontier and Oceans

And lol xD, the 3D models look pretty cool up close haha :D

  • theworldofnoboundries

Another RF after Ocean’s where i would love to pair with the main girl char more than the other girls……. (I hate reality!!!!!!)

  • Oh man, those screens look beautiful! Rune Factory HD! Also, just like RF 3, I cant decide on which girl to marry….

  • Given the announcements for #RuneFactory4 & #SenganKagura, it’s just a matter of time before Japan gets a confirmation about a rumor, revolving around Luminous Arc 4.

Also, I too am glad about Marvelous Entertainment, beefing up the 3DS’ 3rd-parties, at least in Japan.

  • gatotsu911

So, when do we get an AO-rated Harvest Moon?

    • M’iau M’iaut

AO stuffs have always been there if you knew where to look. Karen was an underage lush/barmoll from the start who needed saved from ‘falling’ into a vat of wine.

  • I like HD 8D
and i like the doki doki system, now it wont feel so rushed…

  • Bunzi

Those are some sharply dressed farmers….

  • Kai2591

  • Day one for me if it gets a US release. Which it probably, hopefully, eventually will. So adorable!

  • I wonder how more realistic the world would look like on 3D… I can only get more excited to find out.

  • RunePokegrl00

………. *crosses fingers hoping it’s also for ds*
