The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword To Feature Item Upgrade System

By Ishaan . July 22, 2011 . 3:35pm

In an interview with Gamespot, Nintendo of America’s Bill Trinen reveals that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword features a system by which you can upgrade your items. You can watch the interview video below (via ZeldaInformer):

“What I can say, though, is what we have done with the game this time that I think a little bit different is…they’ve built an entire upgrade system into the game,” Trinen reveals. “So for example, right now you can see that Link has his traditional shield, but he actually will get a lot of different shields in the game.”

Trinen elaborates further: “He will start off with a very basic one, and then as you fight enemies, you will recover kind of these treasures or artefacts that you can then use as resources to upgrade your items. And you can do that with your shield, you can do that with the beetle, and some of the other items that you have where you’re able to kind of combine your collection of rupees and your collection of resources and improve the items that you have.”

There’s hasn’t really been much use for money in the more recent Zelda games, so it’s nice to know that that you’ll be able to put all that money to use this time around.

if i can create a flaming solid gold sword, i’m in.

  • Shinji Kazuya

Oh! My! GOD! This IS AWSOME! Now the wait it’s gonna be even MORE UNBEARABLE!
    I WANNA PLAY IT NOW ;_;

This interview video is great! That… that gameplay! Those new features!
    LINK CAN SPRINT NOW!
This Zelda looks GORGEOUS! Epic way to end the Wii!!

That’s too bad. You have to wait, lol

Indeed. However, considering the notoriety of the fandom’s negative aspects, I’m also anticipating lots of backlash along the lines of “It’s not Zelda anymore!!”.

But hey, no matter what they’ll say, this is indeed a great new element for Zelda series which had a relatively unchanged item interface in a long while. Now exploration will actually pay off much more than Rupees and separate items! Imagine that.

      • Shinji Kazuya

Same here. It’s always like that: Look at Final Fantasy XIII; I loved it, still do, but look at amount of backlash it got from fans.
It will probably be a similar case with Skyward Sword.
I know I will love it though! I already do!! :3

        • Yesshua

There will absolutely be fan backlash.  Ocarina of Time was hated for being 3D.  Majora’s Mask was reviled for being so tonally and structurally different from past Zeldas.  Wind Waker was reviled for turning the franchise into a kiddie game.  Twilight Princess was hated for being derivative and uninspired.

The question is not if this game will be hated, but why.  I’m willing to bet the controls will be the ant in fan’s pants this time around.  I’m also willing to bet that the game will be fantastic and stand the test of time.  Just like every other Zelda the fans have hated.

    Rocket Launching Slingshot?  I’m there!

    … if only…

It actually kind of looks a bit boring.

    • puchinri

Probably because that’s the same dungeon footage we’ve been seeing the whole time and is just a tiny slice of the game, and even that dungeon.

  • http://nocturneadagio.blogspot.com/ LainaLain

I love upgrade systems. I’m surprised the Zelda series never had one before.

    • http://twitter.com/GameGodZER0 Ben Sylvia

They have had upgrading systems before, just not where you got resources from enemies and had to pay rupees to upgrade stuff.

      • http://nocturneadagio.blogspot.com/ LainaLain

Oh, well in that case this is a definite improvement.

  • Guest

I’ve been avoiding most SS gameplay because I didn’t wanna just see crappy cam footage. But holy crap, the visuals look amazing. That dungeon looked so damn beautiful. The combat looks a lot smoother than before and did the item wheel get cleaned up a bit or is it just me? I’ve also been completely ignorant of any information regarding “Faye” (however you spell it) but I love her design. She also seems to speak Midna gibberish in a cute voice which is awesome.

Beautiful visuals, upgradable items, a combat system like nothing else, promises of a bigger over world and tons of content plus orchestrated  music! Officially hyped and now my most anticipated game this holiday. Cannot wait.

    • Shinji Kazuya

Indeed. I knew I would get it, of course, since I always like Zelda but after watching that video… damn!
Looks like the best Zelda I have seen.

    • Daitrombe

You call this amazing visuals? What a joke.

As much as I like Zelda I have seen 3 year old games with better graphics, I guess by Nintendo standards it is mindblowing though.

So you are comparing… HD consoles with Wii or what?  Because with that critera we cannot say anything nice about any console before PS360. :(

They put effort into it and the art looks appealing to many.
        Nintendo standards or not…

  • http://twitter.com/GameGodZER0 Ben Sylvia

Yay they’re bringing upgrading items into the 3D games too!!
Now we just need the magnetic gloves….

  • puchinri

Guhhh! So excited for this. It was awesome seeing all this new footage. I cannot wait to play this for myself.

And Ghirahim – Oh, ahem, Lord Ghirahim, keep being awesome, creepy and gaudy~. ♥

THat’s nice they took so many years to put basic rpg features. But the animation needs a lot of work. the lighting is not that dynamic. So far I don’t see much new for a zelda game that was to take a new approach. Guess you need nostalgia to fully be interested.

I need a wii motion, I NEED A FRIEND THAT CAN LEND ME IT T_T IDONT REALLY WANT TO BUY IT JUST FOR 1 GAME!!, but i have to! ~_~!

    • Loki

If I remember correctly, it comes with a gold Wii remote with motion plus built in, but don’t quote me on that.

      • punkchobit

        It does.

    • Guest

There’s gonna be a version with a limited edition gold Wiimote and new Wiimotes have WM+ built in.

I hope they put in the Zelda II like leveling system.

    • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Always wanted another game like Zelda II.  Even a remake will do.

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Just what I thought Zelda needed, it is going to be fun exploring around for loot.
Actually it seems like new Zelda games always return in full circle minor gameplay details.  Example being Spirit Tracks had some loot and you only upgraded your train with it.

    • Shinji Kazuya

I miss a console Zelda so much since Twilight Princess! It’s gonna be damn fun!

  • YsyDoesIt

It makes me wonder if in this Zelda, the resource system will leave room for more items to discover in the game, or if we’ll be having to discover specific resources given as “story” rewards to continue through the game.  If the former, great.  If the latter, then what’s the point?

    • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Both?  I mean there’s going to be options with it but I”m sure late in the game you are expected to need certain items or upgrade important stuff.

  • Scallion

    Whoa.
    Welcome to the 20th century.
It’s good to know they’re thinking of a way to pad out the game length.
