Zelda: Skyward Sword’s Musical Instrument Is A Harp Similar To Sheik’s

By Ishaan . July 24, 2011 . 4:29pm

Music has always played an important role in Zelda games, and Skyward Sword will continue this trend. In an interview with Nintendo Power magazine, Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma reveals that the musical instrument in Skyward Sword is a harp that you play using the MotionPlus controller.

“With a lot of previous Zelda games it has been about inputting specific notes to compose things,” Aonuma said. “Given the nature of what a harp is, and the fact that it’s an instrument that one strums, this time we’re using the Wii MotionPlus to really make it based on the rhythm of strumming to get across the musical element.”

When asked if it was the same harp as the one that Sheik uses in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Aonuma stated: “The design is the same as the harp that Sheik has in Ocarina of Time.”

Link always striked as a string player, but I’d like to see him with with something fretted, maybe a mandolin.

  • qetuo6

But…I don’t know how to play a harp.

    • puchinri

I don’t either. Maybe Sheik will teach us in-game? (Just as a fun, out of place appearance, of course.)

Super Guide to Harp play with a Sheik cameo?
The same way Rosalina came out in SMG2. That would be neat…

        • puchinri

I almost expect and look forward to that now, even if I know it simply won’t happen.

  • Shinji Kazuya

Oh this is something I didn’t knew!
I had no idea Skyward Sword had an instrument! And you play it with the Wii MotionPlus. Very nice!
This game can’t came out soon enough!!!

    • It’s not suprising since this has happened before in the same series

  • He had a harp in Oracle of Ages as well. AND it was the same design as well.

    • clavat25

      lol no it wasn’t.

      • I remember it being more or less the same. It had a harp anyway.

  • Nice, a harp would definitely suit the current scenario.
But it will never beat the ocarina in my book :3.

  • puchinri

Yay for the harp! Looking forward to playing, especially with MotionPlus.

    • Zero_Destiny

I’m looking forward to it too. XD And on another note you got an avatar. lol I didn’t even recognize you for a second. So how does it feel to have a picture next to your name (or at least a picture that isn’t a dinosaur lol)?

      • puchinri

        Haha, yeah. x’D
        Hee hee! I wondered if I would be recognized. I actually miss the dinosaur a little bit, lol. But since I started Mawaru Penguindrum, I felt it necessary to make an avatar of the awesomeness that is this currently unnamed character (as far as I know). I almost didn’t bother changing my avatar though. x’D;

        • Zero_Destiny

Hey I can’t blame you that’s an awesome show. ^_^ I’m glad it was able to compel you to change your avatar. lol I changed my avatar because well it was a time for a change you know? Plus Magico is just one of the best mangas I’ve read in a long time. I couldn’t help myself but to change it. :D I’m thinking of changing it again some time soon. This avatar is more of a place holder actually. I’m making a new one. Anyways people might start to recognize you even more now that you have an avatar too.

          • puchinri

It truly is. I’m so excited that Ikuhara is working on something again (it’s just a shame that Enokido-sensei couldn’t join him as the other co-writer!). Haha, yeah. I’ll have to look into that! People have mentioning some awesome manga lately. Over on a Strong World art auction, someone mentioned a manga called ST&RS, and now I’m hooked. x’D

I think once Mawaru is at ep 4 or 5, I’ll probably make a new avatar using something from there (but I already have two animated Ringo ones and two with the Princess of the Crystal, so I could just use those instead).

That’s a good point~. Haha, maybe I should just use Mawaru [or anything Ikuhara (and Enokido) related and see if people recognize me for those x’D].

I’m a bit tired and at first glance I almost thought Sheik was in Skyward Sword only to realize it was just a reference. Too bad, wouldn’t mind seeing Sheik in a Zelda game again, maybe join in and bring some skills from Smash Bros. too. Of course the secrets out on who she is, but it could still be done well I’m sure.
