Atelier Meruru Gets A New Age Rating In Japan

By Ishaan . July 29, 2011 . 11:03am

Atelier Meruru was originally released under a CERO A rating, provided by Japan’s Computer Entertainment Rating Organization. The “A” rating is put on games that are considered suitable for players of all ages.

That rating has now been revised, however. Upon further examination, the CERO discovered that the documents provided to them by Gust for rating purposes were lacking, as they left out certain imagery present in the game. Following this discovery, further shipments of Meruru were halted while the game’s rating was re-evaluated.

Following the re-evaluation, Atelier Meruru is now rated CERO B, which is considered suitable for ages 12 and up. The “sexual” content descriptor icon has been added to the game’s cover as well. No changes have been made to the game itself.

  • Thank Goodness, this new rating will surely stop children under 12 from purchasing this pornographic game. Shame on CERO! Shame I say!

In reality the rating of a game doesn’t do a thing other then satisfy the few people who would sue if they found out little Timmy was playing a game rated wrong.

    • I think it’s more a question of ensuring that the rules — no matter how minor the difference in ratings may be — are enforced. A couple of slip-ups or leniency here and there is all it takes to encourage people to start trying to work around the ratings system.

Say what you will about organizations like CERO or ESRB, but the fact that we’ve had ratings systems in place for so long now has earned games a lot of credit.

I’m not sure how CERO is viewed in Japan, but honestly, for the ESRB, they’re certainly not out to ‘condemn’ games with certain types of content. The rating system exists as a form of appeasement to keep video games from getting bad media attention. The rating system itself is no worse than what we see for movies. Rating systems like this exist to work with the gaming media, not against them.

That said, Gust always seems to push the line in odd places (not that I’m trying to make this out as a bad thing), so I’m not surprised by the fact that something was left out nor that the rating was bumped up after further revision.

That was surprisingly quick turn around on behalf of CERO. Just hear about this yesterday. Wonder how long the ESRB would take to re-evaluate a game. A CERO B isn’t bad at all, was thinking it would higher with all the innuendo.

  • malek86

Were the previous games Cero A? If so, why the rating increase for this last chapter?

Did Gust decide to up the fanservice as a last goodbye to the trilogy? :P

  • MrSirFeatherFang

It was due to this photo! ok lol jk
I guess it had to do with the “other” osen scene and the transparent clothing bug?

P.S. Sorry if inappropriate, will remove if asked…

    • Shinji Kazuya

What’s inappropriate about it? It’s just a group of guys in a hot spring.

    • Ack. I totally thought that was going to be something else when I clicked it. xD

      • Shinji Kazuya

Ya wanted the usual hot spring full of ladies, didn’t ya? WELL! The guys need fair treatment too!  :p

        •  Isn’t Just a girl tho? So I think it’s right up to her alley…well except the big badass guy which I like~

          • Shinji Kazuya

Mawaru Penguin Drum! I love that show! One of my favourites this month.
A bit weird but funny and awsome! Just watched episode 4 a couple of hours ago.

          • You have good taste sir! Fav show this season so far, I’ve yet to watch episode 4 but it already captured my heart~!

          • AzureNova

One of the best shows ever! You should also watch Baka Test too lol

    • Rarutos

Oh god, that’s awesome. Props to GUST for fanservice of the male variety. :3

      • SolidusSnake

I believe the appropriate term is “manservice.”

      • Shinji Kazuya

Indeed!!! THE GUYS NEED SOME LOVE TOO!!!

    • XxDestinyXx

The muscle guy in the front is ruining my pretty boy moment!  :(

      • Please! Hagel is the sexiest man among them!

Though it’s be a different story if Gio were in it. xD

        • Shinji Kazuya

Hagel is damn funny in Atelier Rorona. Always laugh tons with his scenes!

          • Doubly so if it’s accompanied by his yodel-theme.

    • SolidusSnake

I hate to play follow the leader, but I just remembered this gem from another great JRPG:

Ah, I think this was the first game I played with actual fanservice, or at least the first one where I noticed it. Every RPG should have bromides <3

      • MrSirFeatherFang

I still have yet to play Lunar 1 and 2… I wish i had those games haha

        • SolidusSnake

lol you can get the first Lunar for PSP nowadays. It’s a great game, you should definitely play it man ! :3

    • AzureNova

Dear God, my eyes!!!! >_< !!!

    • Hagel is one of the best joke characters ever.

  • I can just imagine that copies of the A-rated Atelier Meruru are going to be going for quite a bit. Collectors love things like this, no matter how minor the change itself is.

  • Fencedude

I think that this may be a more accurate icon for use on this game:

    • I love it! Should be made official for games~

      Also your name..~

      • puchinri

        What’s this!? 0A0
Everyone was supposed to recognize me for my Penguindrum icon/avatar!
You gotta change your’s man. ono

        • Omg I didn’t know it was from Penguindrum, well I had an idea but was not sure, I’m sorry!! I will change it if it’s not to your liking~

          • puchinri

Yeah, the girl in the opening with the gun (Juri-clone! ♥) made an impression on me (and we might see her within the next two eps!?). I did have ones with the Princess of the Crystal I almost used though. x’D

Haha, that’s okay. I was just teasing. Penguindrum should get lots of love spread around~.
(Maybe I should change mine so people recognize it better and are more tempted to watch the show.)

          • Fencedude

Not expecting this to turn into a Penguindrum discussion. How odd.

          • puchinri

@Fencedude:disqus  Haha, right? That is unexpected, but I am loving it.

          • Yes the gun gal, I like how cool she moves in the OP these ava’s on Disqus are just too small for me to notice >_<
Also I think you're right, but I'm curious if she's a nice person or not~

I just love the flashy transformation scene, wish I could transform like that~!

          • AzureNova

Your avatar is great. Penguindrum is an awesome show, you should give it a watch when you get the chance.

    • amagidyne

Note to publishers: I will buy any game with this icon.

      ANY. GAME.

    • LynxAmali

I feel like I’m being stalked. From everywhere.
      Thanks, Dude-who-I-totally-do-not-know.

  • I’m willing to bet that it’s still pretty tame.

    • SolidusSnake

You’d probably win that bet, seeing as how it’s now rated for ages 12 and up.

  • mikedo2007

Yeah I’ve been hearing about this.  Also, I don’t see how’s this any different from how ESRB re-rate Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.

  • M’iau M’iaut

So Rorona likes pie, while Meruru prefers hot coffee.

  • Kai2591

Localized Premium Edition! I await its availability!

  • PrinceHeir

well the old rating will be a collector’s item in the future ^^
