Lollipop Chainsaw Will Be Brought Out Of Japan By… Warner Bros. [Update]

By Ishaan . August 1, 2011 . 6:41am

Grasshopper Manufacture’s next game, Lollipop Chainsaw, was only just announced in Japan about ten days ago, but it’s already being officially confirmed for an overseas release. Warner Bros. will be publishing the zombie game outside Japan.

Lollipop Chainsaw is about an 18-year-old cheerleader, Juliet Sterling, who attends San Romero High. Juliet is from a line of zombie hunters, and zombies happen to show up at her school on her 18th birthday. Juliet takes them on with her pink chainsaw.

The game’s website is up now, too, and appears to confirm both an American and European release. It describes Lollipop Chainsaw as a game “bursting with sex, blood and rock ‘n’ roll” that has you uncovering a plot contrived by zombie rock lords to kill Juliet.

Update: Warner Bros. say they plan to release Lollipop Chainsaw in all non-Asian territories in 2012. They’ve brought on Hollywood director-cum-writer, James Gunn (Super, Slither, Dawn of the Dead, Tromeo and Juliet), to work on the game in some capacity.

  • WB is on a roll! Can’t wait.

  • Whoa so Warner Bros can localize games?  They should pick up more while they are at it.
Also, Suda should try and get them to make a movie or TV show if this does decently.

  • SuigetsuHiramura

A cheerleader armed with a pink chainsaw…. would hate to be her enemy particularly at that certain time of the month… *shiver*

  • SuigetsuHiramura

Zombies AND cheerleaders?  Am sensing major geek-catching vibes here…

  • RagnaXBL

something about the artstyle and graphics in this game gets me super excited, really can’t wait to see more

  • Gonna be banned in Australia… I just know it.

    • Sal

      Haven’t ya heard? they’re getting a 18+ rating! :3

  • kroufonz

i am quite surprised WB localizing crazy japanese game!

maybe they’ll give better treatment and give some marketing push unlike EA and shadow of damned.

    • I would be more surprised if they didn’t advertise the hell out of this like all of their other big titles like MK and Fear…

  • mor13ty

as a game “bursting with sex, blood and rock ‘n’ roll”
Yeah, it’s sounds exactly like Suda51, can’t wait for this!

  • Raidou

    Buff..Juliet the vampi..zombie slayer.

  • This game will be awsome.

  • Very interesting! I am excited for the game without a doubt! Everything about it is just win. I can’t wait to see the trailer

    • RagnaXBL

      nice avatar

  • zombies + cheerleaders = not sexy

but knowing High School of the Dead; this game may try it’s best to try and titillate us while rotting people walk around :p

    . . . still getting it tho o 3o

    • puchinri

Lol, HotD was one of the least sexiest things ever. In part because of how it tried so hard, over the toply so to be sexy and titillating. It takes all the sexiness out of it for me when tits start looking funny and becoming more like jell-o rather than the sacks of flesh that they are.

I hope GHM doesn’t go for that feel, but they can make this incredibly sexy and cute without going there and without being obnoxious. (That’s also supposing they realize sexy isn’t all about impossible anatomy or getting gross or objectifying though.)

  • Strain42

Didn’t WB do the film Sucker Punch? Is anyone else getting that sort of vibe from this game?

Didn’t Buffy also originally air on WB? Maybe this game is just close to their hearts :P

Either way, I’m certainly gonna be keeping an eye on this game.

    • Darkrise

I’m getting more of a Sucker Punch vibe from this. Maybe this just want to release something similar to please and in a way, promote the movie?

    • Please don’t remind me of that movie, it was terrible….. >___<

    • puchinri

I don’t want to associate the game with Sucker Punch, but if it referenced Buffy, that’s be awesome. (Yes, please, more badass chicks kicking undead, etc butt and low enough on the sexualization!)

The game is definitely something to watch though~.

  • Barrit

Hm, are they only involved in the publishing? It’s probably too early to ask, but is this game being recorded in English first, like NMH and Shadows of the Damned?

Speaking of SotD, has anyone seen the Japan boxart they recently revealed? http://www.examiner.com/video-game-news-in-national/racy-japanese-box-art-revealed-for-shadows-of-the-damned

  • WB has become a more competent publisher than other companies lately.

  • Hopefully they’ll give it a proper marketing push so it doesn’t get buried like SotD

  • SirRichard

I guess Mortal Kombat gave them a taste for copious violence? I dunno, but I’m glad someone is publishing it over here.

    • Guest

What does Mortal Kombat have to do with this? Please don’t bring that crap game up please thanks k bye

      • Warner Brothers, Good game for different tastes, so quit being pissy over what you don’t like.

        • Guest

Just because Warner Bros published the game means absolutely NOTHING in terms of inspiration. Try again.

          • Has nothing to do with inspiration, only that they are publishing another violent video game… which really isn’t new with Fear and all, but his point is still valid and you’re still obviously asspained about MK. :3c

          • Guest

oh wow a violent video game that WB took on to publish; MK must have something to do with it *facepalm*

            really

          • Not saying that at all cow, guess I’ll have to repeat myself in simple terms for you since your anger is making you stupid… zero inspiration, they published MK, Fear and other violent games, his point is that they wish for more violent games, they are publishing Lollipop, you’re asspained. THE END~

          • Its common practice to try and have a theme or image, work a certain angle.
You publish Mortal Kombat then you may in fact be expected to release another mature game.
            The ideal is very simple.
People like to narrow it down to one thing they think of when they have a company in mind.
(example: many people think Sega=Sonic and nothing else)

      • SirRichard

Oh no, I mentioned a game published by the same publisher with some similar themes. I must be some sort of cretin.

        • Guest

the last Ultraman movie was published by Warner Bros as was Death Note. I guess  Mortal Kombat inspired them too.

          • SirRichard

Yes, Mortal Kombat 9 inspired Warner Bros to publish Death Note five years ago. Yes, this is clearly what happened and I’m glad we’re on the same page here.

Did mentioning a similarly violent game published by the same people offend you that much? I’m oh so sorry if I offended you, good sir, but noting similarities is a problem of mine. It’s like a medical condition or something, maybe.

          • HistorysGreatestMonster

            TIME PARADOX!

  • MCoelho

Excited for the game, now give me some trailers :D

  • Xeahnort

Frank West must be fapping at this point.

  • Zombies, Blood, Sex, and Rock and Roll. TAKE MY MONEY.

  • sandra10

Now, is this “director-cum-writer” part THAT kind of joke, or is my head just in the gutter?

    • puchinri

Your head is in the gutter. x’D
But that’s okay. Not a bad place to be at times!

  • haqua

Catherine: Bursting with sex (well kinda), blood, classical music, and sheep.
Lollipop Chainsaw: Bursting with sex, blood, rock ‘n’ roll, and zombies.

I’m not comparing the two but hahagod. Games are becoming increasingly insane…

    • Bakuryukun

more like around as insane as they were originally, but then stopped because of the realism race that has been going on in industry for the past while.

    • AzureNova

      Yeah, its about time! lol

  • Darkrise

Kind of unexpected but whatever, as long as the game is coming out, i’m satisfied. Hoping for a 2011 release.

  • Hraesvelgr

Well, as long as there’s no movie…

  • LezardValeth

Pre-ordering as soon as it becomes available.

    • AzureNova

Hopefully there will be a special limited editon as well.

      • LezardValeth

        Yezzir.

    • I’ll be doing the same. Also, I’m glad to FINALLY see another VP fan/username on here! XD

  • I still would like to see more like Killer 7.

But that’s pretty awesome that they involved someone like James Gunn.
Should be one of the weirdest and most offensive games ever made.

  • puchinri

Considering there isn’t actual blood, I wonder about that entire line. But that plot sounds interesting enough.

I don’t know what to think of that last bit of info though.

  • PrinceHeir

Juliet is my new favorite Female Characters :)

  • HistorysGreatestMonster

If they hype this up and put the money behind this that they put behind Mortal Kombat and F.E.A.R. 3, then I’m totally okay with this.

    • mikedo2007

Me too, Warner Bros should put a lot of effort for this game.

  • PrinceHeir

    Juliet is hot O_____O

  • At least we’ll get some decent advertisement for this game. :D

  • MarkMario

    This will be interesting.

  • z_merquise

“It describes Lollipop Chainsaw as a game ‘bursting with sex, blood and rock ‘n’ roll’ that has you uncovering a plot contrived by zombie rock lords to kill Juliet.”

Looks like music will have a strong presence in the game (like every Grasshopper games).

Oh and “zombie rock lords”? Would they be like Lord Raptor of Darkstalkers? I’m hoping the bosses here would be similar to No More Heroes where they have over-the-top designs, weapons and personality.

I’m glad that another big publisher will localize this game. Here’s hoping Warner Bros. will do a better job in promoting the game. Also hoping this game would sell well this time. I’m still disappointed for what happened in the sales for Shadows of the Damned. That game is awesome (I even pre-ordered it) and it should deserve more sales.

    • HistorysGreatestMonster

I cannot think of a game from a major publisher that was advertised less than Shadows of the Damned.

  • “They’ve brought on Hollywood director-cum-writer, James Gunn (Super, Slither, Dawn of the Dead, Tromeo and Juliet), to work on the game in some capacity.”

Actually, he wrote the entire game. From the plot to the dialogue. Check his post on his official site.

  • Obscurity made awesome!

  • You seriously CANNOT go wrong with Suda games.

  • Lollipop Chainsaw will be brought out of Japan… while the rest of us continue our campaign to bring over Ace Attorney Investigations 2, Luminous Arc 3, Xenoblade, The Last Story, etc.

    • Last warning. Don’t complain about other games in threads that don’t relate to them.

      • Why are you warning me? I didn’t use bad language or insults. I didn’t complain either. I was merely stating a fact. And even if I was, this is not the way to handle things. I used to like siliconera, but I really don’t like it when people treat me badly. Are you with the police or fire department to give me warnings? Goodbye sir and I hope never to visit this site again!

        • If that’s how you feel, I’m afraid I can’t help you. We have community rules in place that every commenter (including our staff) is supposed to follow. One of those rules is to stop bringing up complaints about games in posts they don’t belong, which you do frequently.

How is complaining about Ace Attorney or Xenoblade in a post about a game not even remotely connnected to either of those (or the companies that make them) doing anything? This isn’t the first time you’ve done it either. That’s pointlessly negative, it does nothing to add to the discussion whatsoever, and just leads to more people complaining. If you really find this simple request that hard to adhere to, then yes, perhaps you might enjoy yourself more at another site.

I don’t understand…you’re usually a pretty good commenter. Why spoil that? You think we like coming down on people for this sort of thing again and again? We really don’t…we’d love it if people just moderated themselves. Sadly, all it takes is a little spark for more people to jump on the complaining bandwagon, which is why we discourage it. I hope you understand that. :)

edit: Just to clarify– You’ve actually posted some very useful comments on the site, which is perhaps why I’m a little disappointed by this. We always give our good commenters the benefit of the doubt, and the same applies to you. The problem is, repeating the same set of rules over and over again every other day gets really tiresome, and it takes away our time from updating the site.

          • I guess I was a bit rash. It wouldn’t hurt to apply myself to the old saying ‘If You Don’t Have Anything Nice To Say, Don’t Say Anything At All’.
If it’s OK with everyone, I wouldn’t mind sticking around a bit more. If I stopped visiting the site, I would definitely miss Melinda’s playthroughs. Also, there are a lot of good folks that I would miss as well:)

          • You’re more than welcome to stay, and I’m sorry if I came off as too harsh. We’re human, too, and sometimes we get frustrated by some of the more ignorant or unreasonable comments, when we see so many of them (like the Capcom localization post early this morning, for example).

Sometimes, that makes us come down a little harder than usual even on people that perhaps don’t deserve that sort of treatment, which I feel is what happened here.

Luckily, our community is a lot better than a ton of other places on the net, and we’d LOVE for it to stay that way.

I’m sorry if it sounded like I was lashing out; I’m just very protective of discussions. :)
