Here’s How Much Each Pokémon RPG Sold On Nintendo DS

By Ishaan . August 5, 2011 . 10:00am

Nintendo released their annual report today, and included in it were sales numbers for the mainline Pokémon RPGs on Nintendo DS, as of March 2011. We thought our readers might be interested to see these.

The “year” column refers to each game’s American release date. Sales, however, are worldwide:

Title Year (U.S.) Sales to date (global)
Pokémon Diamond/Pearl 2007 17.57 million
Pokémon Platinum 2009 7.43 million
Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver 2010 11.90 million
Pokémon Black/White 2011 11.51 million

In a recent issue of Famitsu magazine, The Pokémon Company president, Tsunekazu Ishihara, stated that there are more Pokémon “surprises” planned for the second half of this year, for both Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS. He also talked about his outlook on how to develop 3DS games, emphasizing the importance of online functions.

Wow Diamond and Pearl sold that much? I mean I have my copy of Pearl but honestly I fint those two to be the weakest entry to the franchise, well more money for them I guess~

And second half of this year is now?  New anime we already have a new manga too and this battle game, so Grey?

    • Rarutos

Well, those two have been out a lot longer, so it makes sense!

  • brain_cleanser

Black and White are still moving units, right? I’m kinda surprised that they haven’t sold as many as HG/SS, I was under the impression that they were moving units faster than anything ever.

I’m also a tiny bit disappointed that Platinum moved that few figures. It was the best of the fourth gen-non remake games.

Black/White are still selling, yes. We don’t get to see U.S. or PAL sales numbers, but they still appear on the Japanese sales chart every week.

    • Sulferce

you have to take into account that the figures for Pearl/Diamond, HG/SS, and B/W had the amount of both versions of the game sold piled into one big figure, so the fact that platinum moved almost 7.5 million is quite impressive when compared to the others.

I personally think HG/SS AND B/W are the best additions to the seires since the original Gold/Silver versions.

I’m assuming D/P sold that much as a result of being out for over 4 years. And the rest will catch up to them eventually.

    Pokemon Grey confirmed!

Diamond/Pearl sold that much? Oh wow… I know I bought Diamond version back when it released! And Nintendo must of been like “What Went Wrong?” with the Platinum sales (seeing how Platinum sales are so much lower than Diamond/Pearl sales). And Black/White didn’t surpass Heart Gold/Soul Silver is a little surprising…

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

It makes sense that Platinum has lower sales because (1) it’s a single game, instead of two, and (2) it’s an update to Diamond/Pearl, so it’s only natural that the majority of D/P owners wouldn’t buy the game again. :)

      • AnimeRemix

Well, yeah, that do make sense… I was one of the people who sure enough didn’t buy Platinum, lol. I stuck with my Diamond version…

    • Suicunesol

Well, BW hasn’t been out nearly as long as HG/SS has…

HGSS has had since 2010 to reach that number. And BW released worldwide only back in March. And if there’s anything we know about Pokemon games, it’s that they continue to sell steadily long after they’re released.

  • Suicunesol

BW numbers are not quite as high as I expected. I think it outsold DP in Japan, didn’t it? It must not have sold as well overseas. Or perhaps BW is still moving units so it’s hard to say what a final number will be.

I’m really glad that Pokemon still sells well. But I also hope that B/W eventually surpass D/P, my least favorite pair in the series.

I’d like to see how many people who bought Diamond or Pearl ALSO bought Platinum. I did, and it was MUCH better.

    • http://twitter.com/ifarah12 Gren

I bought Diamond and i was disappointed so i didn’t bother to buy Platinum, i hear people saying it’s better but eh i don’t feel like going back and buying it now.

Bought Black and it’s definitely one of my favorites in the series very nice after the disappointment i had with Diamond.

      • http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/members/55321.html FinalArcadia

Platinum felt like it had much more to do than D/P, that’s for sure.

Black and White are so fantastic though, so I could see it being hard to go back to Platinum, what with the lack of moving Pokemon sprites (seriously, it’s weird not to see them moving in old games, isn’t it?.

See Nintendo? The evidence is right in front of you. All you need for massive 3DS sales is to release a new 3DS Pokemon!

Preferably a Gen 1 (or Gen 3, following the trend) remake so that we don’t have to really deal with the newer fugly designs. Oh, and built in pokewalker off of the pedometer, Oh and Street Pass functionality, and shiny graphics akin to Pokemon Stadium/Colosseum, and etcetcetcetcetc.

Seriously. A new Pokemon utilizing the 3DS functionality/hardware is just going to be win all around.

That doesnt technically follow, just using the highest on the list, there were still near 120mln DS units sold in excess of the number of PKMN D/P. A remake isnt a smart idea considering it did less than a full on new generation. With Black and White already upon us, are people really going to want another Pokemon so soon…

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Wow you aren’t kidding, they need a Pokemon on the 3DS ASAP.

Hard to believe one of Nintendo’s best selling series is part of the genre they are keeping away from us North Americans too…

  • http://www.facebook.com/santd Daniel Sant

pokemon has to be the most lucrative series in the entire industry

    • http://www.facebook.com/CalientePhoenix Phoenix Caliente

Hm? I guess it could be argued that it is between Mario, Pokemon, Tetris, and the Sims as the most lucrative series. (which are the four bestselling franchises)

    • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

And it is odd, I mean the Pokemon games seemed like something kids would find boring with its complex RPG elements and long-winding battles.

Good to know my gut feeling was wrong and  Kids aren’t impatient.  Makes a good entry point if they consider buying more RPGs (I know I did, started on Pokemon now playing the latest MegaTen!)

Wow, I’m surprised at the disappointment with Diamond and Pearl in here. But it’s all cool, different strokes for different folks and all that. I liked Diamond a whole lot and really got into it. I guess it was because it was my first Pokemon game with online features, so I went a little nuts with battling and trading, haha. My playtime hit over 300 hours last year. Behold, my not so secret shame.

    http://twitpic.com/109i4x

I also really loved the music variations between night and day. Shame that doesn’t seem to happen in the other installments past Platinum. I got that one too but didn’t sink nearly as much time into it. I just played it quickly to see the new content. Had some good times with HeartGold too, but didn’t sink much time into it either, since it was just a remake.

Now I’m currently going through Black’s post game content. I’ve had a lot of fun with this game and I’m glad my momentum is still there even after beating the story line. If they end up making a third version, I’d totally pick it up.

Anyways… sorry about that long ramble. Pokemon Diamond is what got me back into the franchise (I got LeafGreen and Emerald in the GBA days but sort of ignored them… sob sob) so since playing it, I’m always looking forward to new Pokemon games. I would love to see what kind of local and online play features they can put into a 3DS Pokemon game!

    • KHSoraKeyBlade

I’ve probably played the same amount on Pokemon Diamond as well.. Though I’ve played through 2 saves (both with over 140hrs of time)….
Pokemon White is so fun after you beat the League, I haven’t put in the effort though cause I got back to playing SoulSilver…

And in light of your Diamond playtime… My Ruby save file and I’m not one bit shamed! xD

      • NipponjiRurouniJSRF

That’s nothing I actually managed to max the time out on mt emerald and complete the pokedex, too bad I saved over my file in order to get more legendaries XD

        • KHSoraKeyBlade

You can max out the time? :O

  • http://twitter.com/JonasPolsky Jonas Polsky

    Must catch them all.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Leafy_Cam Leafhopper

We been over this. It has been recently changed to “Gotta keep up”

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

It’s…mindblowing. Really. Just look at these sale figures..!

  • Asura

I can’t wait for the 3DS Pokemon Edition. That will definitely force me to splurge my money. Seriously, if they bundle a limited edition 3DS with the release of the next Pokemon 3DS game, the sales will be HUUUUUUGE.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kenay-Metcalfe/100000341878000 Kenay Metcalfe

I wonder how much better the other versions would have done if there wasn’t a sudden boom in flash carting.

    • luckgandor

That considered, I doubt there would be considerably more sales.  Based on my experiences, the people who want a game tend to buy it even if they have a flash cart, and the people who pirate something wouldn’t have bought it if it was not readily available to them on the net.

  • luckgandor

To the people who think the 3DS is doing poorly: just want until a core Pokemon title is released for it.

    Remake Emerald and/or R&S!
