Ico: Castle In The Mist Novel Releases This Month

By Ishaan . August 6, 2011 . 10:31am

Back in February, it was discovered that Viz would publish a novel based on Ico by Miyabe Miyuki, titled Ico: Castle in the Mist, sometime this year. July was listed as a tentative release date for the novel, but the actual date is August 16th.

Viz will publish Castle in the Mist under their Haikasoru novel imprint. The re-mastered version of Ico will be released by Sony as part of the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection for PlayStation 3 on September 27th.

I think Ico leaves a lot to imagine so i was always curious to read different people’s interpretations of the game’s symbolisms and that’s why i’m very excited this book will be finally published in the west.
However i understand that for exactly the same reason many people perhaps they will choose not to read it as they are afraid it might ruin their own interpretations of the game’s symbolisms.

Would it be wrong to read this before playing the game? I suppose considering the game is the original product, the novel would almost be like a spoiler for it ._.

      Nooooo!
Better play (and probably replay) the game first!

I don’t really think that knowing anything that happens in ICO will affect its impact when experienced in the game proper. ICO excels, in my opinion, not in its story, but how it tells it. This explains how when replaying the game, nothing feels cheaper for knowing what’s going to happen.

That said… I personally feel it would be a shame not to experience the story, its execution, the characters, etc. in their original medium. I just can’t imagine having not played ICO first. Dragging Yorda around, getting confused at puzzles, the magnificent ambiance of the castle; ICO is a great game, and I have no idea how it is as a book.

Viz could have timed the release a little better, but I guess they can’t just sit around with a finished product until the Team ICO collection is out.
