The developers say it’s a game with retro appeal, but sophisticated visuals at the same time. They cite Castlevania, Muramasa, Actraiser and other titles as inspiration for the game. Here’s a trailer:

Epifanica currently have The Light of Darkness in a pre-alpha playable stage. The game is a project on crowdfunding site,, and needs support so it can be completed. If you’re interested in helping out, you can check the details out on its Kickstarter page.

there seem to be alot of sidecrolling games lately :)

Hard Corps, Moon Diver, Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance

with upcoming games like Bloodrayne Betrayal, and this

oh how i wish we could have a new Megaman X game in the same vien as X4-X6

will look into this more in the future :)

If Konami doesn’t want to give us our Metroidvania fix, someone else will.

“They cite Castlevania, Muramasa, Actraiser and other titles as inspiration for the game.”

With character and monster design inspired by Clayfighter, and the California Raisins.  And voice work inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger’s audition for Avatar.

    Could be good though!

  • Well, it’s certainly got style. :3

I want to like this, really I do.  The artwork in the backgrounds is pretty nice, but the character animation and design seems kinda lackluster, and looks a little clunky.  No real impression on the sound as there really isn’t any music playing either.  Hoping they can trump my initial impressions.

I am still hoping to see more from the 2d sidescroller Dust, that game looked beautiful.

Dust: An Elysian Tail? I’m not a fan of things featuring anthropomorphic animals, but the animation/graphics in that game look damn good.

      • mikanko

Yeah, I’m not huge on things where everyone is an anthropomorphic animal either, but the music and animation in the teaser trailer from over a year ago are very very pretty.

  • glemtvapen

I’m a fan on Metroid-vania games and this one’s style looks great. Although the animation is still pretty stiff.

  • Hraesvelgr

Considering it’s pre-alpha, I’d say it looks pretty good. The animations and character/monster graphics need to be improved a bit, but I don’t see that being a major hurdle. At the very least, they’ve got some damn good taste in games.

  • The ultra-fast camera pan whenever you turn is going to end up making me nauseous as heck.  I hope they consider that…

  • cool concept but trailer was terrible.
how can we read the sub while watching the action? :/

  • Interesting. We’ll have to see how the final product turns out.

    • You will only actually see the final product if you help (backing) the project. Its, because that it´s in Kickstarter right now.

  • Very interesting details. Castlevania is one of my all time favorite series, so hopefully this doesn’t get cancelled and/or it sells well, cause it looks great so far, and surely it cannot disappoint once they do finish.

  • LezardValeth

Absolutely beautiful backgrounds, the combat mechanics could use a little tweaks, along with the animation, but this game is definitely going in the right direction, please support people with ideas like this, no more Call of Duty.

Before I read the article I watched the video and it seemed more like a more complex version of act raiser. My question is, is this a flash game or a psn like download, cuz I would love this one the 3ds or vita, even if it doesn’t use any of the extra features

    • theworldofnoboundries

LOl speaking act raiser, What a coincidence. I just finished act raiser and today… such a good news.

  • Why is she Maxwell and not Undine or Celsius? I mean it’s strange that they change the gender of a spirit/summon.

  • RagnaXBL

very cool, looking forward to seeing more

  • We dippin’ this bacon in this Jack Daniel’s sauce. Oh wait…

  • mmmmmmeh, I think I pass.
