Disgaea 3 Will Indeed Return On PlayStation Vita As Disgaea 3 Return

By Ishaan . August 8, 2011 . 8:45pm

Last month, we reported a rumour that Nippon Ichi would be porting Disgaea 3 to the PlayStation Vita. That rumour has been confirmed by Dengeki PlayStation magazine in Japan. As previously reported, the Vita port is titled Disgaea 3 Return.

Two new characters and four new scenarios have been added to the game, and the downloadable content from the original PlayStation 3 version will be present as well. Nippon Ichi have also reportedly modified the character portraits to appear similar to those of Disgaea 4’s.

  • hd sprites please?

    • Guest

That doesn’t make sense. You don’t need HD sprites on a tiny screen.

If they were to remake it they should rerelease it for PS3.

      • FireCouch

That’s a silly argument.  So because the screen is small, you shouldn’t bother making new, higher resolution sprites? Okay.

        • Guest

Do you have any idea how much work it would be to redraw all the sprites?

It just doesn’t pay off because on a tiny screen you’ll barely notice the difference.

          • This is pretty much what I’ve been thinking since people kept mentioning the HD sprites. I think I remember a previous article on here where NIS did say that it costs a lot to draw sprites, especially HD sprites like those, and animate them properly.

Given how this is an enhanced port, it would be easier to program in new scenarios or import characters (since Disgaea 4 has the classic sprites option, too) than to redraw everything. It’s surprising enough they’ll be redrawing the portraits.

  • DAY 1 BABY DAY 1!!!!!!! RPGs rock and this shall be mine. I will so love to take Almaz von Almadine Adamant on the go. I will surely get 183 hrs of playtime again.

  • pw;aowhjphjtepjepWELP

also are they. are they holding up a blackboard in that picture?

ALSO. Two new characters? I see a vampire and a prinny girl coming soon to Evil Academy.

  • Awesome. I hope they add cool stuff and tweak the gameplay like they did in D2: Dark Hero Days. With this, I hope it will pave the way for Disgaea 4 Vita. I want to play that game so much…..

  • jello44

    Who didn’t see this coming?

Hopefully it will use the same kind of sprites that D4 is using, I remember 3’s not looking so hot on my HD monitor. I may have played, the first chapter and a half before I had to stop.

  • Eric Chan

Nippon Ichi really needs a new franchise. Any new system that comes out, they automatically have to port a Disgaea.

    • Exkaiser

      Disgaea makes money.

It’s the only one that really does.

  • shion16

    awwww screw them !!
    i just bought it for ps3!!! ¬¬

  • d19xx

If they’re using the same low res sprites, then I’m sticking to the PS3 version. I’ll just wait for the next game and see if they’ll use the new hi res sprites.

  • dragoon_slayer12

    fucking righteous man!!!!!

Just add 4 into the digital vita catalog, and I can carry some of the most funniest, entertaining, addicting series ever.

Now all Sega has to do is port PSO episode 1and 2+. And pso2 and I’ll be a happily divorced bum living in front of public libraries (or in my mothers house, if she I could learn to shut her voice out ) XD. Kidding, but not far from the truth

    • ON your comment on sega, I would also like to see sega remaster Valkyria Chronicles 2 and 3 with the VC1 engine and port the remaster collection to ps3 or ps vita.

  • nyoron

Meh, another port. Of course since it’s Disgaea I’ll end up buying it anyway. The four new scenarios better be decently long.

  • *Raises a fist full of dollars* thank you NIS, you may have this.

    Thank you.

*Looks off to the horizon as one manly tears falls from the heavens*

  • Please save compatibility between this one and the PS3 version same goes for DLC I don’t want to be scammed into rebuying my DLC!

    • What I honestly wonder myself is if they will be offering the DLC as something to pay for again, or if they’ll be packaging it into the game as a sort of “Game of the Year” edition port.

I mean, at the least, I imagine that Raspberyl Mode is going to end up being one of the four scenarios mentioned… I hope there’s an Almaz scenario. :<

      • id like that, one of my favorite characters in the entire series so far.

      • I hope so, that would be great, or they could have additional content so it can work with the dlc so we get more stuff and don’t have to rebuy DLC, that would be the best scenario. Also I can’t get that song, extreme outlaw out of my head, I listen to it every day.

  • i have a question about the dlc they talked about. they said it would be present for the game, but what i want to know is, do i have to buy all of the dlc again, or if it is just on the disk as extra content i can get later buy beating them after the story or something.

and will the trophies be new and challenging?

  • HistorysGreatestMonster

In a perfect world, they’d allow you to transfer your saves between the PS3 and Vita versions and make the additional scenarios DLC for the PS3 version.

    • Exkaiser

  • Yu_TheKing

GETTING THIS! Especially since I’ve yet to play the original. Can’t wait to see what scenarios they add.

  • Code

rar, interesting, but can’t help but feel like it’s a little too soon for my tastes. Disgaea 3 was a little while back; but Disgaea 4 nearly back-to-back with Disgaea 3 Returns might be a little overkill so I might skip out on D3:Returns T3T Something I don’t like doing with Disgaea games.

    • Disgaea 3 was three or so years ago, and Disgaea 4 might have come out this year, but chances are, this port won’t be coming until next year, as it is. I really doubt they’ll be getting it out for the Vita’s launch, for instance.

      • Code

        When I say back-to-back, I’m mostly making a comment on how long Disgaea games last >w<; it's not that I expecting it out in December, or PSV launch. If I get similar mileage out of Disgaea 4 that I got out of previous games, it could easily put it back-to-back with a D3:Returns summer release owo;

  • kupomogli

While I’m not a Disgaea fan, so begins Vita taking the reigns from PSP as the next handheld RPG king.  More RPGs soon to follow I’m sure.

    • MakoSoldier7

psp was not the handheld rpg king…

      • sandra10

For this generation, it was. Most of those RPGs were just never localized, though, so people didn’t know much about them.

      • If you have a platform that got Falcom shifting from PC, yes it is.

  • I wonder if I buy Disgaea 4 and their DLCs or just wait a little more for the psvita port.

  • Xeahnort

Never finished a Disgaea, but somehow I can’t stop buying them.

    • Exkaiser

      You don’t “finish” Disgaea.

      Disgaea finishes you.

  • Draparde

looks like Nippon ichi might have just decided what handheld system i get.though…until i walk out of the store with one or the other…i’ll never know. i’m unpredictable at times…

    • Exkaiser

You’re going to walk out of the store with both of them.

The path of least financial savings.

  • interesting but..
after buying disgaea 1&2 for ps2 and then for psp
makai kingdom for ps2 (and supposedly in the future for psp)
la pucelle for ps2 AND psp
phantom brave for ps2 AND psp

i REALLY REALLY am not going to re-buy disgaea 3 for vita..
no offense, but this is just milking your fanbase dry..
I’m going to buy disgaea 4 for ps3 of course, but i’d like to see titles on ps3 AND different titles on psp.. not a freaking amount of ports..

    • Lord Highawesomeparty

Milking or not, I think NIS titles just work better on handheld platforms. NIS is a small company so whatever keeps them afloat doesn’t really hurt them or the gamers at all.

But that’s just how I look at it.

      • Exkaiser

Disgaea really benefits from being pick-up and put-down-able.

Well, really, most NIS games do, since they all tend to include some long optional dungeons you can’t quicksave in the middle of.

  • Lord Highawesomeparty

My reaction to this story was similar to the Makai Kingdom portable’s story, but with a lot more jumping, screaming, and running around my house… ing.

As I said before: only NIS can get me to do that.

Well, it was nice knowing my 3DS but there’s a time in every man’s life when he just has to let go of things… and there’s a Vita down there at that GameStop waiting for ME… and my copy of Disgaea 3.

I love you Siliconera for reporting this story, and I love NIS for remaking my favorite game.

  • cmurph666

All I want is save compatibility between the PS3 and the Vita version is mine~!

  • OH man more games announced for Vita the more I want to break my anti-early adopting promise.
Well by time the first good sale comes for it I’ll certainly bite. :D

  • Mister_Nep

Calling it now. NISA will announce they’re bringing the game over less than a week from today.

    ….I hope I’m right >_>

    • SuigetsuHiramura

Unlikely, but we can dream XD

      • Alex

i can see it beeing in the line up of the vita in the west

  • theoriginaled

Congrats NIS. You just sold the Vita.

  • fanoultimate

A Disgaea port? On a Sony handheld? How surprising~

…no, is not. I will buy it anyways, although 1 is still my favorite

  • IsaacGravity

    *insert maniacal laughter here*

Ahem, well damn, the Vita keeps giving me reasons to pick it up. Disgaea 3 in the palm of my hands~ *shivers* It’s like one of many gaming dreams dream come true!

  • Advent_Andaryu

I’m glad Disagea 3 is getting the portable treatment, and this gives me an incendive to get a Vita early, but what’s up with the name? Hopefully it changes before release. Disgaea 1 & 2 portable re-releases had awesome subtitles: Afternoon of Darkness, Dark Hero Days…

Disgaea 4 Return sounds too plain for the series, they could have done better even if it’s just a temporary name.

  • Well….another rerelease from NIS I’ll be buying…..actually the only games I have from them are their rereleases lol.

  • Thomas Maloney

I’m totally going to import this (and buy it again) day 1, but whatever happened to NIS’ excuse that they “couldn’t do remakes of games with dot graphics”?

    I call shenanigans.

  • Right NIS, you can take every last bit of the money I have =)
