999 Designers Working On 3DS And Vita Visual Novel Adventure [Update]

This week’s magazine leaks have begun trickling in. Japanese retail blog, Sinobi, reports that a new visual novel adventure by the team that developed 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors has been announced.

The game’s script and direction is being undertaken, once again, by Kotaro Uchikoshi. Like 999, Kinu Nishimura is providing character designs.

The new game is in development for the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita, and will be fully-voiced. As with 999, Chunsoft will publish the game in Japan. No release date has been announced so far.

Update: After a brief internal chat, we’ve finally decided how to translate the game’s title. It’s something to the effect of: Extreme Escape Adventure: Good People Die. Sound familiar? That’s because 999′s original Japanese title had “Extreme Escape” in it, too.

I really hope this gets brought to America. I absolutely loved 999, and we need more games like it!

    That’s a lot of designers.

I see those precious magical words, sign me up baby!

  • idrawrobots

Wow this is news to my ears.

  • neo_firenze

“will be fully-voiced”  Eww.  Here’s hoping you can do text only… visual NOVEL.  Lame voice acting could really drag this kind of game down.  But I’m sure Tsunayoshi is in disagreement here ;)

Part of why I liked 999 so much was the reading, and getting my own sense of the characters.  I probably would have been pulled out of that zone if I heard typical anime-esque voice acting. Sort of like how people get more wrapped up in their own mind’s perception of a book, and feel a movie version didn’t do it justice.

    • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

After reading the Audiobooks to classics such as the Artemis Fowl series and Harry Potter, the experience in having a voice and the audiobook readers do their voices (I believe they even did it for A Series of Unfortunate Events), having the words spoken just puts me into the zone and gets me immersed. Im usually of the opinion that a movie version is often greater than the book, for the sake of having the visuals be given, the character being portrayed (Twilight), basically provided the framework (like in Inception) of helping me to build a visual for the source material.

Surely the charm in Disgaea Infinite was partly due to it being voiced by our favorites.

      • Guest

You said everything right except for Twilight. Get that crap outta here (game AND movie series)

        • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Kristen Stewart is how I imagine Bella Swan to look.

          • Apache_Chief

Bella looks exactly like Stephenie Meyer. Because Bella is Stephenie Meyer.

    • Guest

Dont agree either. I dont see anyone complaining about Devil Survivor Overclocked getting voice work (even though thats an RPG it still has VN like story presentation).
besides, you can never get minds perception of a book with a game once it has pictures anyway. You can create the characters voices in your own mind but thats about it. The pictures take away from a visual imagination you create in your head regardless.
What I want to see is some actual nice 2D animation since the development kits for the Vita are so dirt cheap they should be able to come up with some cool stuff this time around for that system (which is pretty powerful handheld i might add).

    • Apache_Chief

You know, anime voice acting doesn’t HAVE to be bad :P

      • neo_firenze

Yes, but it so often is.  Especially the English versions of lower budget games. Though if there are Japanese voices, I’m perfectly content to leave them on and read the English text.  I’m also very much a sub over dub anime person, though there are a few examples of English dubs I prefer.

Then again, a 999 style game isn’t going to get much hype/budget in the west anyway I’d guess.  So maybe they’ll leave it Japanese VA only simply for money reasons even if it did get a localization.

        • Apache_Chief

Oh yeah, Japanese dubs ftw. It’s really hard for me to pick out bad Japanese voice acting, so it’s always risk free! I’ve learned some basic Japanese words thanks to the Fate/Stay Night dub too, so there’s also that.

    • http://www.aksysgames.com Belisarius

This just for my own edification—I’m not trying to be leading or factitious—but have you played BlazBlue or Mimana, and if so how did you feel about the (English) voice-acting in either of those titles?

    • Kibbitz

Lame voice-acting can always drag things down, though it can also enhance some people’s experience if it’s stellar. Still, you like what you like. These games usually will have the option to change voice volume separately anyway, so you can lower voice alone to zero if it bothers you.

Your mention of ‘typical anime voice-acting’ intrigues me. You hate it? And that and you even hoping for text-only seems to imply that you typically don’t play visual novels, since I’m pressed to think of many without voice-acting.

      • neo_firenze

Nope, I don’t typically play visual novels.  999, the somewhat similar Phoenix Wright games, etc.

And I’m not too bothered by full voice acting, as long as I can turn it off if I don’t like it.  I’m a little surprised that “visual NOVEL” has so many people excited about voice acting though.

    • Guest

      Mute the game….

    Fully voiced somewhat-sequel of 999?

Alright, let’s do it.  I loved 999, so I don’t give a rats ass if it’s fully voiced.

  • sandra10

    Dual audio, please!

  • http://twitter.com/Vanpan110494 Sentoro Katarashi

We need more visual novels in America! Period!

  • SalomeHarras

999 was a pleasant surprise for me (although it does have its problems narratively, but you almost always do when you mess around with time-space), and I look forward to seeing how this new endeavor pans out.

  • DanteJones

999 was pretty sweet. I could definitely use more of those types of games. :D

  • http://yirba.50webs.com/ Yirba

I don’t know what this game is like. All I know is that I want it!

    Problem:

    Nintendo 3DS games are region-locked.
Not particularly keen on PlayStation Vita.

    • kylehyde

Considering that 999 was more succesful than the Aksys expected, there is a chance that they can bring the sequel over the west (of course if this game is going to be a sequel, which I hope so).

      • http://yirba.50webs.com/ Yirba

And in the case of the Nintendo 3DS version, that helps me how? :-P

        (lives in UK)

Well, I suppose I could shell out for a Vita, but there needs to be more games that I wanna play.

        • kylehyde

          Oops

Well I think that make a third problem. However, since is still in development we have to wait and see, probably some miracle could happen  and I hope that it happen.

  • kylehyde

My reaction when I read Chunsoft and 3DS

My reaction when I read that the game probably is going to be some kind of sequel of 999

  • fuzzy_hobo

So we don’t know if it’s a continuation of the previous game’s story yet? I look forward to anything from this development team, but that also means another true ending-like scenario from Uchikosi that will make my brain hurt…

  • http://twitter.com/VietKnight Alexander Le

So can’t wait for it if it does come out since I went straight thru the game nonstop on 999

  • Lordphantomhive

999 is seriously one of the most underrated games ever. I will keep a eye on this for sure.

    • Guest

Not really. It got rave reviews. The mass market just didn’t buy it but it definitely sold well. Aksys had to run a new print because they couldn’t keep with demand.

  • Syltique

    I’ll buy this day one.

This is the best news of the day! Aksys, please bring this over! I’m a little worried about the fully-voiced detail though. I hope you guys can fully dub it. :D
Oh! How awesome is that sub title!? Good People Die? Keep that Aksys! Please!

You’ll be localizing this for sure, won’t you? ^^
And don’t be afraid to just let the Japanese voices in, like you did with Blazblue.

Other than Fate/Stay Night 999 is the only VN I actually enjoyed.  Maybe if we were to get some more non-pornographic VNs in the states they’d get a wider audience (well F/S Night had porn, but the sex wasn’t really the focus).

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=510234553 Jason Ryer

I will admit to like 999 as well so if they can pull off anther game of that quality then this should be a good one.

    • Guest

I highly doubt that, but it wouldn’t hurt. I’ll always prefer my eroge to visual novels.
      MangaGamer….Shin Koihime Musou please?

  • Guest

I think 999 is seriously over rated but if they can work out some of the kinks and make the plot less stupid I’m all for it. Especially if Rei is gonna be part of this. I liked my Axe ending and wanted to stop playing then. I continued and boy did that plot get dumb real fast.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ferofax Abdul Panganting

…uhh, suspension of disbelief? seriously, if you can’t bring yourself to go along with ridiculous plots and twists, you won’t enjoy much out of ANYTHING.

maybe you’d prefer something more logical, go read some pulp fiction/detective novels instead.

      • Guest

It’s go nothing to do with logic. I thought it was stupid and didn’t enjoy it, simple as that.

    • Sorrows_Neptune

The ending alone is what keeps me from calling the game a masterpiece. I thought the ending was good and all, but…yeah it definitely detracted from the game.

  • Göran Isacson

Good People Die. You know what- make THAT the title if it’s localized. I would buy the HELL out of a game with a cool name like that.

Also, I echo some of the fears here regarding voice acting. Voice acting is the bane which has made game writing more and more difficult and expensive, and I am perfectly okay with text alone if it means less trouble for the developers with plotting, bug-fixing, localization etcetra.

999 was fantastic, I eagerly await for this now.

  • http://twitter.com/ShiningxWander Wander

Awesome news! I played the heck out of 999 and loved every second of it xD. Can’t wait for more information about this game :D

This is such great news!  Now I’m going to have to get a Vita for sure. :P

  • PrinceHeir

    this is amazing :)

i want to see a comparison between PS Vita and 3DS :)

    • meat0bun

The PSVita version has anti-aliased text.

  • FireCouch

I literally just finished 999 100% this morning.  It was by far one of the best games I’ve ever played and I’m so happy they are making another one.  I’ve got to avoid all media for this one though, considering I went into 999 completely blind.  It’s going to be hard.
