By Ishaan . September 5, 2011 . 8:30am

While we’ve been posting playtests for the Nintendo DS version of Ni no Kuni, Level 5 have been focusing on the getting the PlayStation 3 version completed. Today, they released a new trailer for the game:

Ni no Kuni: Queen of the Holy White Ash is slated for release on November 17th in Japan. Level 5 and Sony will release a new PlayStation 3 hardware bundle for the game’s release, which consists of a special “gold” 160GB PS3 and a copy of the game.

Art style seems reminiscent of Eternal Sonata. Game looks great.

    • godmars

Except its not overly unnecessarily shiny and glowy.

  • mikanko

I have given up trying to resist the urge to import this.

Ni no Kuni will be mine this year.  Oh yes, she will be mine.

With or without a golden PS3. I do however find myself refreshing the pre-order page for the bundle every few hours I’m in the vicinity of my computer. ~.~

This game… damn it’s beautiful… and the music, holy hell!~

    • Kibbitz

I’ll probably be importing without a PS3, or picking it up myself if I end up going to Japan early next year. Funny, I usually feel nothing for Ghibli and Hisashi’s music (it’s his still, I assume?) but I want this now too.

      • mikanko

Dunno how to respond to that.  I <3 Miyazaki and Hisaishi music.

If I could wish for one dream game to be made after finding a genie or a monkey's paw or whatever it'd probably be a Panzer Dragoon'esque rail shooter in Nausicaa land.

        • Kibbitz

Haha, it’s just a personal observation. I’m not a soundtrack guy usually, and what I like usually is very “game-y”, very character/stage themed as opposed to mood pieces that one encounters more in anime and movies. I’m just very surprised that I want this that much. There’s just something magical that clicked for me this time.

The monkey’s paw thing… better not =P Genie, sure! I never caught Panzer Dragoon though or that style of rail shooter =(

          • mikanko

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0c-GKG3OeC8  Well prolly has something to do with me wanting Panzer Dragoon to be resurrected more than any other sleeping franchise.

I potentially attribute that to the game’s aesthetic being pretty similar to a Miyazaki world of primitive peoples and empires bent on resurrecting lost technologies that destroyed the world etceteras.

But yeah, if I could play this in Nausicaa land on a combination of levels on their riding ostriches, and some on her glider thingy It probably means I’m dead because, ya know, heaven and all!

  • RagnaXBL

Seems like a really nice game.
just too many sunflowers, rainbows etc for my tastes

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

I’m completely enthralled by it. Words cannot express the sheer beauty this game simply emanates.

  • Merulana

    This game is GORGEOUS.
The music in the trailer is GREAT.
    I NEED THIS GAME NOW.
SOMEONE NEEDS TO LOCALIZE THIS. WE NEED THIS GAME.

  • godmars

    *cries*

Ask $500* for a Western version with subtitles, and I’ll pay it day one.

*Okay, $1000 – AND THAT’S MY FINAL OFFER!!!

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Jeez. I don’t want to hype this up too much, but this game looks to put all console JRPGs from this generation to shame, most specifically a franchise that screwed up when moving to HD. Going by the recent playtest articles, if the only thing this game does is expand on the DS version, I’m sold.

  • Aoshi00

So the PS3 ver tells pretty much the same story as the DS ver?  would it use Move to draw the spells?  I actually quite like flipping thru the magic book and use the stylus to draw the magic spells.. feels like I’m doing the same thing Oliver does.. and the book has a chart for the alphabets of their lanugauge like Hunter x Hunter to decipher some hidden secret..

    • godmars

No! No Move controls – NO!

      NO!

      • Aoshi00

So people like MNH’s sword swinging and shaking to recharge the beam katana but not the spell drawing in Ni no Kuni?  I thought that was one of the most unique features for the DS game..  referring to a hard copy of Magic Master like Oliver is doing in the game.. there’s lots of symbols for many spells (and even a different language).. I guess w/o Move, it could still work like the original PS2 Okami..  the PS3 ver looks good, but I really like the 2D handdrawn background in the DS ver too and playing w/ the stylus..

And I want them to have different stories instead of replaying the same story like deja vu..

        • Kibbitz

As long as it doesn’t NEED a Move to play, I’m fine with it having Move spellcasting =P

          • Aoshi00

yeah, of course it should be optional, like Child of Eden w/ Kinect or regular controller.. just feels like a waste not to use Move for spellcasting after the DS ver using the stylus.. and they even ported Okami to the Wii and Okamiden on the DS.. I actually didn’t like the motion control for NMH, instead of immersive I found it troublesome and inaccurate, but people keep calling me crazy for preferring the controller.. I don’t think Move control would be that inconvenient for Ni no Kuni as an RPG, you still choose the commands and run around w/ the navigator, and use move to draw the different spells.. For the DS ver, I run around w/ the dpad too, and for turn based battles sometimes I use btns sometimes the stylus..

          • godmars

As long as it doesn’t need it and there’s no indication that it needs it in non Move gameplay.

It’s pretty much the same story. However, LEVEL-5 have added new scenes such as a fairy trying to avert the tragedy from the beginning to the game.

      • Aoshi00

gotcha, everything does seem familiar… I’ve only played around 8-9 hrs though on the DS.. and it’s indeed a great game.. I just went back to Sakura Note now (Uematsu soundtrack is awesome).. I started too many games and never finished them *.*..

  • Shinji Kazuya

    Wow! So damn amazing!

This is one of the most beautiful games i have ever seen along with FF13,13-2, versus 13,Xillia. To me, this game is smooth/cleaner than Tales of Xillia. Props to level 5 and studio Ghibli. Please bring this over to NOrth America.

  • Ravage27

One of the best looking game ever made in the history of mankind. Simply gorgeous!

  • SuigetsuHiramura

The graphics are beautiful, but this just feels too “adventure in story-land” for me to pick up.

  • MrRobbyM

I feel like a child every time I see a new Ni no Kuni trailer :)

  • http://www.fanfiction.net/u/601368/ Sharda Colon

This is just too amazing for words to describe. I for one would love to see this localized.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=685220688 Vince Vazquez

This is exactly what I wanted from an HD era Japanese RPG. This looks beautiful and memorable. It’s just a shame it doesn’t look “Ghibli enough” to me.

The art….those aren’t the kind of character designs in Lupata or Princess Mononoke. These are too simplistic and more generic. Also, there’s some unfortunate mocap in the animations…that’s just too lazy for a studio of Ghibli’s reputation. They’re renowned for adding so much personality to their characters through subtle animations, y’know? The characters in Ninokuni clearly aren’t as lovingly animated as characters from their movies. It’s a shame.

But beyond that slight disappointment, everything is amazing:) I shouldn’t hold it up to the same high standards as one of their films anyway; games are different. One lasts for an hour and a half, the other lasts for dozens of hours. You gotta do things differently.

I really hope Level 5ia is localizing this as we speak. I don’t wanna see this two years after Japan gets it. Or worse, never get it,  a la Xenoblade.

  • HarryHodd

Everything I want from a jrpg and more. Simply beautiful and adventurous.

  • Yukito

DEAR GOD YES. PS3 HAS A JRPG NOW.

  • mumakurau

Just take my money, now, Level-5! My PS3 is starving for JRPG goodness!
