A Commercial And Specs For Sony’s 2-Player PlayStation 3D Display

By Ishaan . September 6, 2011 . 10:00am

Sony have released a new commercial and hardware specifications for their upcoming PlayStation 3D TV display. The display will be sold in a $500 bundle along with MotorStorm Apocalypse (U.S. only), an HDMI cable and a single pair of 3D glasses:

If you want to play splitscreen with a friend like the trailer advertises, you’ll need to buy a second pair of glasses, which cost $69.99 and include rechargeable batteries. Pre-ordering the bundle before the end of September will also net you Resistance 3 for free.

The display is 24” with stereo sound speakers and weighs 5.7 kg, including the stand. In Japan, it will be released on November 2nd. A date for the display hasn’t been announced for the U.S., but it will be sometime in November, too.

Oh baby. I’ve been waiting for this. Day oneeeeeeeeeee

  • shion16

Its awesome yes , but only 24” ??

  • aoihana

That SimulView thing is awesome. Though, wouldn’t it require third party support? What if this is a gimmick? Still, pretty cool.

    • malek86

Yes, it’s not something that can just work with any game. It will need to be programmed.

Maybe new games will take advantage of it, and maybe existing games can be patched, but overall, I think it will end up being like one of those add-ons that only gets used by four or five games. Unless Sony pushes it a lot.

On the plus side, it appears LG has also presented one of these TVs (a 47″ this time), so maybe Sony is already starting to get around and making deals…

      • aoihana

Yeah, I think this will end up like the remote play feature on the PSP, but who knows. I think this time it may be mainstream.

If LG is pushing one of these out, I think I’ll just wait then.

    40,000 USD knowing Sony.

    /partially joking.

    • Kris

It says $500 in the article…

      • MrRobbyM

I know..it was a joke at Sony’s overly expensive products..

Split screen on the same tv would have to have it developed into the game I’m sure.  I don’t think you’d be able to just put in an old two player PS3 game and have it work.

So Motorstorm Apocalypse might be the only game that has this feature at the time.

    • aoihana

Yeah, that’s what I thought. I hope it doesn’t end up being a gimmick to lure in consumers.

    • ragnarok989

A lot of current 3DTVs can do it already. It’s just splitting the video and turning it into 2 images and broadcasting them like a 3D image. Look on youtube, people already have videos showing it

As ragnarok said, 3dtvs can already do this. Some people even showed call of duty black ops with the different glasses. Should work with any split screen game.

24″? still bigger than my current LCD TV T_T

might have to pick one of these up

  • Xeahnort

I had plans to buy this, but after seeing how they changed Resistance 3 for Motorstorm I’m having second thoughts.

    • Testsubject909

You pre-order it prior to September 30, they include Resistance 3 for free. So that’s actually Motorstorm AND Resistance 3.

      Does that help?

      • Xeahnort

        Thanks.

$70 3D glasses that require batteries???

    Huh. That’s new to me.

    • http://twitter.com/VietKnight Alexander Le

It has a battery pack inside the glasses which means no more batteries being put in and just charges like the controller.

    • Aoshi00

I thought of getting this at first, but 24″ is just way too small (my first LCD many years ago was a Sony 23″).  This is the active 3D that uses special glasses (different by brand of TV too) and needs recharging.. It seems that the passive kind is getting more prevalent now.. that’s the kind you use the glasses for a 3D movie from a theater, cheap and not battery operated.. and LED 3D TV’s price is dropping too.. I would rather spend $500 more to get a 47″… (my current one is 46″ now) also from the looks of it, the active 3D glasses look quite heavy, not sure if they’re too comfortable to wear for long gaming session..

I was also thinking of getting it but I’m already playing from a pretty good 24′ monitor. Since my tv is ancient I do all my gaming on my computer monitor. I want to go bigger so I’ll just save up.

Does anyone know if this 3D will be compatible with Nvidia 3D display?

  • KotaroInugami

Didn’t they lose alot of money making these TVs or something?

  • SolNeko

if they can do this then soon i can be expecting TV glasses so u wont even need the tv :P

How is it perfect for your computer without a VGA connection?

  • tubers

Unless this is at LEAST an IPS panel.. NO WAY. Then again, sounds impossible it is. For the price, 120hz and some fancy “filtering” system per glass. Sounds impossible to be an IPS. BTW IPS panels have better colors w/c aren’t common for sizes and price like Sony’s offering.

Would rather stick to 569 USD 50 Inch Plasma 3D TV with free glasses today at Fry’s Electronics.

Then again, it’s a Plasma.. not the best for long hours of gaming..

    Sigh.

    If money weren’t a problem.. :(
