This Is What The Nintendo 3DS Analog Attachment Looks Like

By Ishaan . September 6, 2011 . 9:15pm

Famitsu magazine’s report on a second analog pad attachment peripheral for the Nintendo 3DS is on the same page as their report of Monster Hunter 3G (more in this post), and it sounds like the primary function of the add-on will be to play that particular game.

In addition to adding a second analog Circle Pad to the device, the attachment will also add an R2 button. This is what it looks like:

This Is What The Nintendo 3DS Analog Attachment Looks Like

So far, Monster Hunter 3G is the only game that looks like it will be making use of this add-on. Theoretically, other games could be programmed to use it, too, but as of now, details are scarce regarding who the peripheral is produced by and how wide an adoption rate amongst 3DS owners Nintendo have in mind for it.

Someone linked me this before the article went up. I was crying and laughing.

  • http://twitter.com/Cudgeon Raji

The rumor of eurogamer about a redesign of the 3DS with less 3D and a second analog nub seems true now, since they also stated an optional addition for the old 3DS with a second analog nub.

    • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Less 3D is kinda pointless when we can adjust it.  I rather have 3D that is more “gyro” friendly really.

  • http://www.siliconera.com Jenni

I’m not impressed and don’t want it. Mainly because it would mean detaching the Power Pak+ battery pack I got for my 3DS and going back to the horrible, stock 3DS battery.

  • eilegz

its good to see that they decided to add a second analog, shouldn’t be there in the first place? oh well at least they are improving now, we need good graphics for 3ds games and no psp like ones…OH lets not forget about region lock remove it please… oh well the new 3ds model will come im sure of it….

  • AndyFe

it’s umm interesting, it make the 3ds look lopsided to me. it’ll probably work ok but I’ll have to see it to be sure

  • http://www.facebook.com/wahyudilestadi Wahyudi Lestadi

I believe there will be 3DS-lite soon …

    • http://www.themogblog.com/ Edward Walton

And of course it wouldn’t be able to fit in this thing…

    • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

how can you get much “lite”-er?  Unless you mean the attachment getting smaller.

      • http://profiles.google.com/dnlblue Daniel blue

“how can you get much “lite”-er?”

Redesigning the interface to include a second analog stick by default, thus rendering this silly attachment pointless.

        • dragoon_slayer12

If you look at the 3ds RIGHT NOW (as in open it up), the only thing that needs to be done is ADDING the stick. Where current placement is, the 2nd (smaller stick) fits perfectly northeast of the power button. L2 and R2 (C and Z?), is another story.

  • http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/members/55321.html FinalArcadia

A little on the bulky side, but it’s nice to have another analog stick.

Of course, this should’ve been there from the START, but better late than never.

  • http://www.themogblog.com/ Edward Walton

So our portables will no longer be portable. Man, adding additional bulk to an already decently sized handheld was entirely the way to go. Guess we’re all gonna need additional man-bags and purses to carry this around. -_- -twirls victory flag-

    • Exkaiser

We’re back to day one, baby. Day one!

Back then I was student so I had a backpack to carry it around in… I guess now I should having a briefcase… I swear, someone needs to hope on the idea of a Briefcase with 3Ds and Vita pockets because we’re so seriously getting there.

Ahhhguhbuhahhh… Dude, I don’t care. Just let me get my Monster Hunter fix.

  • Daniel13789

Strangely enough… I actually like it! I’m kinda hoping that a few games will be able to use this. The main one in particular is Kid Icarus.

    • thebanditking

I don’t see this happening either, especially with Kid Icarus coming out this fall. Delaying it further would only hinder gamers confidence in the platform further.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/HAEBCODVH3BGFIHE47BKNDXD2I Jonathan

this’ll probably make more FPS games possible. . . yay?

    • thebanditking

Not that we need anymore FPSs (the industry is over saturated with them as it is) but I highly doubt this unless Nintendo include this as a pack in for the titles that use it to increase adoption/usage because as it stands now I don’t think too many 3DS owners are happy enough to support this (I know I’m not)

      • dragoon_slayer12

There’s nothing wrong with a little fps on the go here and there. I actually would prefer it that way (considering I have kids that need 90% attention and I prefer handheld more than anything recently. Man I live sleep mode)

  • http://eonhack.blogspot.com theclaw

3DS has needed a better grip. The flat square-ish design really isn’t all that comfortable. It didn’t help they couldn’t raise the dpad or circle pad any higher without damage to the top screen…

    • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Now that you mention it, the grip would make this handheld feel more like a standard controller.  Just looks clunky.

  • http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=2704923 Buntar0

Look at the size (thickness) of that thing, that’s SEGA Nomad territory.

    • thebanditking

Yeah but the Nomad had better games to play on it then 3DS does right now ;P

  • xflame10

well it certainly looks bulky and ugly, but no uncomfortable by any means, and i could probably still fit it in my pocket

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002478680775 Tyler Palazzo Greenidge

Maybe the games that require this could use the gyroscope also and this is for those who don’t use gyro. I can imagine MH3G swimming using the gyroscope function instead of this.

  • http://twitter.com/VsJake JLW

Might as well wait for the new version of the 3DS now, folks.  Nintendo is not going to sell many of the original 3DS when people know they are changing the whole control scheme.

    • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

What if the new version looks similar and attaches this add-on permanently?

I don’t know *what* version to get now…

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DD6I22SFK5ECS2NCMML5ELZYVQ Sean

Don’t worry about it.  We won’t see a new 3DS version for at least 2 years.  Whether or not we see a second analogue pad will depend entirely on how many games use it and how popular those games become.

It’s far to early to tell but historically speaking add-ons like this don’t usually receive much support and are usually not be compatible with future hardware redesigns.

        • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Oh with the right games I will get a 3DS.  So far there’s a bunch but Paper Mario is one of the system sellers for me.

About the add-on I doubt many games I will play will use it and I don’t play Monster Hunter so this doesn’t concern me personally.  It does make me worry about the state of the handheld as I like Nintendo handhelds.

        • dragoon_slayer12

consider this though, 6 months prior to release, a device like this with the potential to be a game changer/standard here on out, has a higher chance to succeed than this releasing 2-4 years from now (where library can be from 200-2000 titles, while it currently stands anywhere from 30-60). This can be an experiment to see how demanding a 2nd stick can be, and but with the right price/bundle/support (like Ocarina of Time for aiming and camera control, RE mercenaries and revelations same deal), the first model 3ds will go down in history as a debacle launch that led to one of the greatest revisions and/or handheld/console ever (beating the vita due to second screen, extra buttons, and 3d). Sounds like fantasy, but if done before the 3ds’ 1 year anniversary, it is 100% possible. And if that happens, don’t be surprised that the vita either adds 3d before or after launch

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=685220688 Vince Vazquez

         It’s called the Vita:)

        • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

I want both.  I’ll give your remark a 7/10 for trying.

      • thebanditking

Just wait for the re design it will have better battery life and maybe bigger screens as well. They will increase the width to make room for the second stick so I would not worry about it being as bulky and ugly as this thing.

        • dragoon_slayer12

Personally, I want the revision to be the size of the XL, it may not be pocket friendly for most (I love cargos), but the e
Size of the screens (both can then be equal sized and widescreen rather than the mix match of the current design), and will offer plenty of space for button and stick placements. Plus, bigger screens for a more beautiful viewing angle (and hopefully better batter life and the new dual screened 3d screen minus sweetspot)

  • http://twitter.com/VsJake JLW

Changing the control scheme is minor?  I guess in the sense that its related to video games, its minor.  No one’s going to die over it, I think.

Really though, you can’t grasp why people are bothered?  Are you high?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DD6I22SFK5ECS2NCMML5ELZYVQ Sean

@twitter-166086765:disqus  Don’t hold your breath, judging from past releases we won’t see a redesign of the 3DS for 2 years.  Also, I doubt a second analog pad is going to be a permanent addition to the 3DS and I really doubt many games will be made to support it.

I’m expecting to not see this add-on outside of Japan.

  • Tokom23

What have those punks done to my 3DS? Bet I can’t even fit this into my pocket anymore. An embarrassment to handhelds everywhere.

    • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

Capcom hates handhelds, make game to play more like console controller.

  • aoihana

Now that Nintendo confirmed they manufactured this monstrosity, it worries me, just a little, that a hardware revision will be announced at TGS. But like I said, I highly doubt they will burn their fans like that because if they do, it will take more than 20 classic games to compensate us.

    • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

More like closer to next year to announce.  So far only Monster Hunter uses it, I dont’ think there’s any reason *that fast*.

      • dragoon_slayer12

Yeah, but why does Kojimas Productions have one then? And not that far after Snake Eater was delayed either? Most likely, japan will get this bundled with MH while NA gets it with MGS. Mark my words, revision is coming, and this will be mandatory. Just hopefully this stays at the $10 tag that french site mention earlier….

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2WNP7FYA3VYJQKEYYV5GXH3K5Y yahoo-2WNP7FYA3VYJQKEYYV5GXH3K5Y

The 80s called. They want their ugly peripheral back.

  • http://www.facebook.com/gakun Ngoc Ton

Dun worry guys, this add on is just optional for the gameplay of monster hunter.
Look at the placement of the second pad. Look at the now decentered screen.
Look at the space this thing is wasting. Now look at me, now look again, this thing isn’t turning into DIAMONDS at all.

Hey guys, cramble your 3ds docking station and put your 3ds into it.
Now hold it into your hands and try playing with it, it’s uncomfortable, isn’t it?
Well, this peripheral is “kinda” bigger than that.
    Enjoy your nightmares as i do mine… ;_;

    • theworldofnoboundries

Lol and this 2nd analog is also optional for playing MH3DS which mean that the software…… useless?

  • thebanditking

Knew it was coming and I knew it would cover the entire back of the system, looks like it connects into the quick charging area for power. Personally I don’t like this it looks bulky and makes the system even less portable. Just one more thing to emphasize that the system was rushed and needed more time. 3DS is ending up being one of the worst purchases I have made (32X tops the list btw). Still I think this all but confirms we will see a re designed 3DS right in time for spring (in Japan) just like they did for the DS Lite and the DSi and DSi XL.

  • AdrianHeng

OK this is just … goddamned awful. Why, Nintendo? Why? I can understand the need for a second analog nub for the console, but why not have designed it WITH this second nub in the first place?

Surely they had to come to a concious designing choice when they first chose to ONLY have one nub? They couldn’t have just looked at each other one day, 6 months after their handheld was released, and asked each other “Hey, you think we MAYBE should have put a second nub in? That’d be a freakin’ awesome idea! WHY DIN’T WE THINK OF IT SOONER?”I’ve been trying to turn a blind eye to all the 3DS’ shortcomings and just focus on the few games I enjoy and the cool 3D feature, but if you keep coming up with idiotic ideas like this, I’m going to have to hand Sony my money.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Siyango Allison Willis

It’s probably so they can milk more money out of the people who already bought the system.

  • theworldofnoboundries

Guys i think i know the reason why they make this second analog.
Remember Wii U controller? It has two analog which probably mean that if we wanted to play Wii U with Nintendo 3DS u will need to use the second analog.

And for other to know Monster Hunter3DS can also be played without using the second analog.

For those who have not buy the console maybe u guys should consider for the new console in the next two years as i had feeling at that time they will come out with second analog attached there meanwhile for those who have buy the console first……….. lets just accept we get troll by Nintendo.
Lets just try to enjoy the game that will be coming out…………… Hiks”Cry in the corner of the room.”

  • dertyp

WTF?? glad that i haven’t bought one yet. i’m waiting for a revised 3DS version some time next year. the platform still lacks interesting titles anyway…
