Nintendo 3DS Sales Increase Amidst Falling Hardware Sales In August

Recommended Videos

As of August 11th, Nintendo 3DS went from costing $250 to costing $170 in North America Did that help sales of the system? Apparently it did, as Nintendo report they sold 235,000 Nintendo 3DS systems in August in the U.S. 185k of those were sold after the cut.

That’s a 260% increase over July, and it was enough to bring The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D back into the NPD Group’s top-ten software sales chart.

While hardware sales in general for all consoles grew from July to August (if you combine sales of the entire DS family), the hardware sales category on a whole was still down by 12% as compared to August 2010, according to an NPD report.

Microsoft’s Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb reports via Twitter that the Xbox 360 sold 308,000 systems in August, making it the best-selling console for the month. The 3DS was the #2 best-selling system.

Retail software sales were down by 34% as well. This is partly due to the fact that Madden NFL moved from its usual August release to September. One also needs to take into account that the NPD don’t yet track digital download software sales.
