I like the English vocals better.

    • http://twitter.com/Chris_Kraft Chris Kraft

      HEY, SHUT YOUR FAT MOUTH!!!

      Just kidding, me too.

    • OneOkami

I remember was a article some time back that spawn a debate in the comments about the Persona 4 voice acting, in which I was effectively expressed my agreement.

I actually really enjoyed the Persona 4′s english cast much more than the Japanese cast.  Most notably for me, I like how Chie sounds a bit more older/more mature, Rise’s cute voice was just spot on, Teddie’s “bear” puns were WAAAAYYY better in the english script and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn voice/acting is always fascinating (oh the entertaining disappointment of Ms. Kashiwagi’s failure in the swimsuit contest and the uhh…”inviting gesture” towards the underage boys who happened to stumble upon her…good, memorable times).

Atlus USA also recorded more voice acting during the localization and more for me that made a significant difference in some of the social link scenes (especially for “Death”).

      • Fonic

Yeah I liked the dub better too. Particularly Chie, Teddie, and Naoto. The only exception would be Yukiko. I didn’t hate Amanda Winn Lee as her or anything but she didn’t seem quite right for the role to me. Ami Koshimizu on the other hand was pretty much perfect.

      • DanteJones

I loved the dub for P4! The only one that I didn’t like as much was Chie. Not that I hated her voice or anything it was still pretty good, it was just the only one that sounded a bit “off” for me. I can’t quite put it into words. My favorite though was Naoto’s, holy crap. *_*

        • Zeik56

Chie’s was honestly one of my favorite’s. She had a few awkward lines, sure, but by and large her delivery is what sold me on her as a character. I never get tired of hearing Chie sing about Filet Mignon.

      • Aoshi00

I think it really comes down to which voices the players are accustomed
to from the beginning.. I’ve played thru most of the Jpn ver and only
played a little of the Eng ver so I don’t remember the Eng voices much..
the Jpn cast is stellar though.. I’ve always liked Yamaguchi Kappei’s
kuma/Teddie.. plus of course people don’t understand the dialogue here..

It’s like DBZ, I’ve only grown up listening to the Jpn voices and many have watched the US dub.. I don’t really care for the US dub at all and those accustomed to the Eng ver think Goku is weird being voiced by a woman..

I don’t really watch anime anymore, but I would follow this after Steins;Gate :)  The anime did the game a great justice.

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu

It’s not the fact that Goku was voiced by a woman that pissed people off, it’s that she makes Goku sound like a chipmunk on high pitch. If I had heard Goku in Japanese when I was young, I probably would’ve looked at him as a weird man with a kid’s voice rather than a savior of Earth. Like Vic Mignogna’s role as Zero from Vampire Knight, experience and fame is no excuse for a bad role.

          • Aoshi00

I’m sure the Jpn audience who’ve grown up listening to Goku for decades would feel differently from you though.  Personally I think the Eng DBZ dub is atrocious, Vegeta sounds like a chain smoking maniac while Horikawa Ryo’s Vegeta was very cool like a royalty w/ pride.. or like Kuririn voiced by a man, it sounded weird to me because I’ve only listened to a woman voicing him all along (Tanaka Mayumi, Luffy/Pazuu).. I grew up watching DB in Jpn and the first time I heard the American dub in the 90′s it totally shocked me (the cutting and altering of script), but for someone accustomed to watching it in Eng all along it’s natural.  It’s not because of Nozawa Masako’s fame, though she has voiced countless boys’ and young adults’ roles thruout her long career (like Tetsuo in Galaxy Express 999).  I didn’t think Goku sounds weird at all.. I thought the VA was great in portraying kid and adult Goku & Gohan, Goten, and Bardock at the same time, and she still sounds as energetic as 20 years ago despite being in her 70′s.. she could still sound like a kid now it’s amazing..

My point is some people think the Eng. P4 dub is better is because that’s the ver they played thru listening to for dozens of hours, and I like this Jpn dub because I’ve only played the Jpn ver for the most part.  It comes down to which ver watch first and more exposed or accustomed to. To me, Yamaguchi Kappei is kuma (I’m not even used the Eng. name Teddie), Seki Tomokazu is Kanji, Morikubo Shoutarou is Yousuke, Horii Yui is Chie, etc.. as I’m not familiar w/ the Eng cast..

Like I’ve grown up watching Capt. Tsubasa or Slam Dunk in Jpn, if I listen to those anime dubbed in Eng now it would sound weird to me because the Jpn cast is so ingrained in my mind over the years since childhood.

          • DanteJones

Totally agree, for me it’s usually what I hear first is the one I’ll stick by and like the most. I watched DBZ in Japanese as a kid way before I saw the English ones, but when I finally did get around to watching the English version it didn’t sit well with me. The same goes for Bleach. The voice acting isn’t necessarily -bad- (with the exception of a small few that wanted me to rip my ears off), I’m just more used to the Japanese ones. XD

Though in P4′s case, I played it in English first, then when I heard it in Japanese I didn’t like it as much.

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu

Call me careless, but I don’t see how kids from the 90s were able to find and watch DBZ in Japanese.

Of course, you’re right about being accustomed to which dub you hear first. Unfortunately, thinking about that subject forces me to go back to the early 2000′s as what I call the “Dark Age of Dubs,” when you can easily spot anime fans who were “dutifully” prejudice and bias towards dubs, especially when they debut. I almost struggled as a teen watching anime because of that. I didn’t always meet people like you, who are composed and truthful of their impressions. The biggest victim was probably the Naruto dub. I watched it first in japanese, but eventually I grew accustomed to the dub and now have a strong impression about both languages. Same with Bleach and Clannad.

I still do that, really. Whether it’s an anime or a game, if it has a good english dub, I can lean towards it.

Bottom line, I think it’s not just the dub you hear first, but also the dub you’re likely to grow accustomed to the most.

          • Aoshi00

I grew up in Hong Kong, so I was used to watching DB in both Jpn and Chinese (and for many other anime as well). I used to read DB’s new manga chapters weekly in Shounen Jump and rent new DBZ eps every week subtitled in Chinese using my hard earned allowance lol. When I first heard the heavily censored US DBZ dub, I was quite devastated as it was one of my favorite shows, especially the different portrayal of Vegeta among other things.. and at the time I was young and didn’t realize why anime needed to be censored so badly in the US as it was not mainstream.. even though it was quite a bad dub, I could understand it was dear to the US audience if that’s the first ver they are exposed to (and the dub and script had gotten better later on)

Neither Jpn nor English is my native tongue, so I’m not really prejudiced against either.. of course the Eng. dub now in games and anime in recent years is miles better than years ago which really was cringe worthy for the most part.. I guess I could get used to the Eng Naruto dub, the thing is I just haven’t watched the Cartoon Network ver much.. so I’m not attached to them.. but I do like both Takeuchi Junko’s or the Eng. “Believe it” Naruto, the lady was funny..

When it comes to really exceptional Eng dub, I would prefer them too, like FF12 & 13 for example, or even some Tales games.. I wonder what Steins;Gate would sound like when the anime is finally released in the US.. I watched the whole thing in Jpn alrdy, but I wouldn’t mind listening to it in Eng.. I’m too used to the seiyuu cast though from the game and anime..

Truth is I was quite a big fan of VAs all these years, in Jpn, Chinese (HK), or English.. I could instantly recognize many of them in their different roles, so I’m very open to all of them.. but Eng VAs are the ones I’m least familiar w/ other than from some games as I don’t watch anime in Eng. I watch them in Jpn w/ no subtitles..

I understand for the majority of P4 fans who’ve played thru the game in Eng., it would take some getting used to watching the new anime in Jpn, the voices they’ve only heard from some trailers..

Still I think one major factor of preference of dub greatly depends on which version you listen to first.. like FFX, the Eng dub was not the greatest and kinda awkward at points, but I love it even now because I first played the US ver, then later I played the Jpn ver and thought the Jpn dub was much better, but there are things that I liked in the US dub like Wakka’s Jamaican accent, the way Seymour talked, etc, it holds a special place in my heart even though it was not the best dub.

        • OneOkami

I wouldn’t say that is NECESSARILY the case, though I definitely see where you’re coming from.  I watched (and thoroughly enjoyed) most of Ghost in the Shell (movies and first season of the TV series) in Japanese before I saw any of the dubbed versions, and honestly, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn won me over pretty much immediately.  I actually refused to watch 2nd Gig or Solid State Society until I was able to in English.

On the other hand, I played Persona 3 in English before I played it Japanese, and I ended up enjoying the Japanese cast much more overall.  I’m probably naturally biased toward Maaya Sakamoto as she’s my favorite seiyuu so I won’t count my preference towards the Aegis in Japanese, but I do feel I legitimately enjoyed Mitsuru and Yukari much more in Japanese despite hearing their English voices first.  Also, I say “overall” here because I still prefer Junpei’s English voice.

Also, one thing I’ve often argued in the past on discussion forums is, the way I see it, quality acting is quality acting, and being in a particular language, for me, can make can have a significant impact not because its simply in Japanese, or simply in English (or any other language though those are the only two I know), but because a particular language may be more appropriate due to the setting and character background.  Even though I could be fine playing Metal Gear Solid in Japanese, I really think I prefer the English dubs, not just because I’ve heard the English voices first, but because it makes more sense (or should I say sound more natural) for Snake, Otacon, Colonel Campbell, etc to be speaking fluent English rather than fluent Japanese.  The same goes for a game like Heavy Rain.  I’m not quite so conscious of that in games like Persona 3 and 4 because they come off as relatively fantastical so in those cases it just comes down to whose voice just feels like a better fit for the character.

The Death arcana S.Link on P4 gave me a manly tears REALLY it so realistic yet Inspiring and touching. My memory serves me correctly it I cried at Lv6-Lv9. :D

        • OneOkami

Yeah, I found Death to be exceptionally emotionally deep and easily one of my favorite social links of the game.

    • Elemiel

I have to agree with you. :o

  • http://www.facebook.com/scottie.townsend Scottie Townsend

I hope they take this past the game’s story.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wayne-LaBranch/100002132711844 Wayne LaBranch

It will of course follow that story but it will have new things and such that’s not in the game

      • papuruka

        “like your dead wife?”
        “wait, what?”

        :p

Yu’s jacket is buttoned. Naoto’s shadow has proper fitting sleeves.

Gah. Don’t like. At least it didn’t have Rise talking. Her Japanese voice was just…ugh…

    • DanteJones

A bit odd yeah, the first couple scenes his jacket is unbuttoned yet the ones after it’s closed up. Maybe he’ll just switch on and off throughout the anime? XD

  • Shinji Kazuya

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH! I SAW AND HEARD YUU TALKING!

Damn, I’m going to almost die every week waiting for the next episode in the upcoming months!

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/EnvyMizuhashi Garyuu

I think we’re going to get a lot of “I see what YUU did there” puns now.

  • DanteJones

Oh man, that scene with Yu’s awakening! I can’t wait for this anime to air! :D

Though, I think I like the scene in the game more. He was a bit more shadowed, and combined with the light in his glasses and Izanagi behind him made him look MUCH more badass!

EDIT: Now that I look at it again, the moment in this trailer when Yu crushes his Arcana card is pretty badass too… I can’t make up my mind!

    • SuigetsuHiramura

I agree 100% XD  Hoping that this anime gets licensed overseas and everyone reprises their roles.

dun really care about the anime

    more concerned with P4P having a FeMC o w o

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wayne-LaBranch/100002132711844 Wayne LaBranch

Persona 4 Golden won’t have a FeMC….it has this new girl but yeah

    • papuruka

We DID have a FeMC…for a short time, at least. :p

  • MarkMario

Have they announced how many episodes there are going to be?

    • JhonnyNNY

if i remember well, -no quite sure tough, maybe i read it somewhere … – there’s gonna be 25-6 Ep in total

      • papuruka

What about the length? I read a rumor that each episode’s gonna run for an hour, kinda like the first episode of Kamisama no Memochou.

        • JhonnyNNY

mhh… i didn’t hear anything yet about it , but that rumor sure sounds cool ! :D

      • http://www.facebook.com/Chrome.Cell Bernard Yanga

        I want SEASON TWO already!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rudy-Soto/100001518601121 Rudy Soto

Wow, no matter how much I hear it, listening the protagonist verbally speaking an entire sentence just feels weird.
    REALLY WEIRD.
EDIT: About his closed button uniform, i think that his previous school’s uniform.

    • papuruka

It’s not, since the collar has that dogstooth pattern found in Yasogami’s uniform. But he does unbutton the uniform earlier in the trailer.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wayne-LaBranch/100002132711844 Wayne LaBranch

Yu/Souji WHATEVER you want to call him, is sure looking like Gideon Graves when he summons his persona. 1:06

Don’t compare that selfish ass to someone as awesome as the Protagonist man!

am i the only one who saw El Psy Congroo at the end?! Steins Gate!

    • Aoshi00

lol, you’re right, what the heck.. is that like a nico nico douga comment?  Just saw the last ep of the S;G anime, totally awesome, very good adaption of the game and beyond, I’m getting all the blu-rays… I still need to get the El Psy Congroo T-shirt one day *.*, it’s the choice of Steins;Gate!

    • papuruka

lol, it’s just an annotation added in by Doppelmet, the guy who uploaded the trailer. It was inspired by his comment on the short Naoto teaser, where he basically said, “HEY LOOK, IT’S MAD SCIENTIST HOUOUIN KYOMA!!” :p

      He’s obviously a S;G fanatic, hehe.

  • AzureNova

O my God that was an awesome trailer! I can’t wait to watch this!

  • http://strictlyapathy.comoj.com/ SoulArbiter

I wonder if they’ll include the upcoming new character in this anime somewhere? Because that’d be awesome!

    • papuruka

I’m more concerned about whether they’ll include the sub-plot about Elizabeth finding a way to free Minato, really.

      • Zeik56

Why in the world would they do that? It had nothing to do with P4′s plot. It was only casually mentioned in some superfluous dialogue.

        • papuruka

Because it ties to the reason why Margaret’s in the Velvet Room in the first place.

          • Zeik56

But that’s still completely irrelevant to P4′s story. Why a character who has nothing to do with P4 is not in P4 has no place in a P4 anime. The anime is only going to be so long, and they’re bound to gloss over plenty of the side-story stuff already, spending any time expanding on a completely inconsequential piece of dialogue would be a waste.

          • Chow

I knew there was a reason Aigis is in the P4 fighting game.

            They’ll. Find. A. Way. o_o

      • http://strictlyapathy.comoj.com/ SoulArbiter

That’s actually not a bad scenario! That would give some closure wouldn’t it?

        • papuruka

It would! And perhaps the whole scenario could be shown in the form of an OVA. That’d be the best kind of closure, I believe :)

          • http://strictlyapathy.comoj.com/ SoulArbiter

I completely agree with you with it being an OVA. I had the same thing in mind, too!

          • papuruka

It’d be mind-blowing if we get to see Yuu and Margaret battling each other in said OVA as well :D

  • shuratan

Damn I just love Persona music!

    • JhonnyNNY

:3 CANT GET ENOUGH OF MEGURO – SAMA!

  • http://www.facebook.com/trevor.nicolaysen Trevor Nicolaysen

I’m wondering if he’ll ever grow out of izanagi in the anime.  And will he ever interact with anyone aside from the party members?

  • WhiskeyMcGhee

I find it odd that Persona 4 would get an anime as I thought Persona 3 was more popular in Japan. Yeah there’s Trinity Soul, but that wasn’t even cannon and not to mention terrible. I guess P3 has been done to death and maybe they want to move the Persona franchise away from P3 considering the aggressive push of everything P4 as of late.

On a more relevant note, the anime does indeed look splendid so far. The Japanese voice actors aren’t annoying, the music is cheerful (as always) and it doesn’t appear they’re straying too far from the game. It’ll take awhile to get used to the protagonist being an actual character with a voice rather than my puppet, though.

  • mikanko

Needs more folding chair, like a certain TGS something.

    http://i52.tinypic.com/2m4d7r8.jpg

  • SuigetsuHiramura

Hmm I think Persona 3 would’ve had a better story for an anime, however, I’m still very excited for this XD

    • Testsubject909

It’s not as directly grissly because of a lack of death surrounding the protagonists and their everyday rather oddly cheerful lives considering the gravity of their situation.

Plus, they technically pulled a P3-lookalike story with Trinity Soul, minus the Tartarus midnight world.

But yeah. I’d like a P3 anime, if only for Mitsuru.
