Final Fantasy VI And Chrono Trigger Bring A Double RPG Dose To PSN [Update]

It feels like we say this very often about these two games, but Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger are being released on another digital platform — both games will be available on PlayStation Network this week.

Both games are also available on the U.S. and European Wii Virtual Console services as well.

Update: Neither Chrono Trigger nor Final Fantasy VI will be available this week. Sony just provided an update on the PlayStation blog’s release list, stating: “This post incorrectly identified the release of two PSone Classics, Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger. These titles will not be releasing on PSN at this time. We sincerely regret the error.”

I won’t be getting them, but for those that do, hopefully they fix the load times.  FF6 some very bad load times whenever entering battle.

I don’t think Chrono Trigger was bad on the PSX except for those menu load times, which were pretty bad.  Entering exiting areas isn’t too much longer than the original, and entering battles were pretty much the same.  It also came with the best version of Final Fantasy 4(until Complete Collection atleast.)

Chronicles was worth it for FFIV. Chrono Trigger…not so much.

Personally, I think the DS versions of both should be considered definitive. Complete Collection uses the GBA translation of FFIV, which is missing some things (like the poetic take on the Mysidian prophecy) from the DS version.

At least the Archfiends have their proper names now.

    I need Chrono Cross nao!

What’s with the temper?!?! Chrono Trigger is an awesome game.

    • http://twitter.com/TheRyusui Ryusui

Probably because you can get a better version of Chrono Trigger on DS (better translation, no load times), but Chrono Cross is only available in disc form.

  • Learii

    rofl wow

  • Yukito

Kind of a weird combo…..one in the chronicles set, one in the anthology set. Why not both games in one set, or both sets all together?……

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wayne-LaBranch/100002132711844 Wayne LaBranch

Its not really that weird…Best Old School FF…and One of the best Rpgs…i don’t see anything weird about that combo

      • Testsubject909

Indeed, two masterpieces offered in one deal. It was as such before and it is as such now.

Two masterpieces that richly deserves a proper non-stereoscopic 3D remake which fans have been begging for years….

  • KOKAYI5

I’m not buying them. I’ve played 6 twice. I feel like I buy it as soon as I do they’ll come out with a remake on PSP or VITA. I’m waiting. At least till next year’s end. For 6. Not interested in CT, saw my little bro play it and it annoyed me how little of Magus I saw after years of hearing he was an unstoppable beast.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wayne-LaBranch/100002132711844 Wayne LaBranch

how can you not want to play Chrono Trigger? what’s wrong with you, but seriously its like one of the best games that SquareSoft have even made

      • KOKAYI5

It is an imaginative game, but Toriyama’s art isn’t for me, and a mute lead, and Magus very little in the foreground, and most of the chracters are kinda comical in personality. I like characters more like… how to explain it…. I like characters with a personality like Sephiroth but as a good guy. Or as close to that as possible. I perfer Chrono Cross. I had lots of fav characters in that. Serge (even though he was mute he moves looked cool), Glenn, Guile, Ohrla, Lynx, Harle, Karsh and Norris. That was my first RPG on PSone, and from there I vowed to play RPGs almost exclusively!

    • Bakuryukun

That’s a pretty terrible reason to not be interested in Chrono Trigger

      • KOKAYI5

i really like Magus, but he sprinkled around the game and you play as him very little. I wish they’d do a remake all about him. I don’t hate the game, I respect it, but I have to be picky about what I buy or I’ll have no money for other ones I like. I liked Chrono Cross. I lost it, but if I eve get to buy it again, I WILL!

    • Testsubject909

      Well… Magus is a near-end game playable character…

      • KOKAYI5

Why did it have to be this way? I mean, he’s interesting. Even Lavos related story parts seemed less so than his since Lavos is a speechless, manipulative, and cowardly glutton. I hated fighting him in CC and I hated hearing his origins in CT(that I watched).

I played these games 3 times and the PSX versions are the worst.. If Trigger come for PSP with clean graphics like half-minute hero ou tactcis ogre, i would buy it again

  • Alexisonfire

But why would you get them when the Virtual Console had better emulation of both?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EUSPDCE22Z6ETYY3W5XRZ2SFZU Darrel

PSN version – Playable on PSP/Vita/PS3. The VC version can only be played on Wii and if your console breaks, you lose your games.

  • http://twitter.com/ChaseBurr Chase Bonner

Yeah they have real bad load times =/

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wayne-LaBranch/100002132711844 Wayne LaBranch

mmm i might pick it up, it sucks that since the PSX versions have crappy load times, but i’m not picking about that especially from the two good games…and maybe we can get SquareEnix to make a remake of FFVI 8D…its not going happen >.>

    • Testsubject909

Still, keep the hope alive! Ima purchase it too.

  • Herok

I already have the ds version of CT i think its 100%ed item wise so is their any reason to get this copy and with 6 i hope they remake it on ds/3ds like they did with 3 and 4. 5′s remake turned into 4 heroes of light not that i am complaining about that.

  • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

Got Chrono Trigger on the DS (lovely game, it’s on my top 3 games of all time) and already got FF VI out of the PSN store as soon as it was released. You US Bros better enjoy these two amazing games, a’ight?

    • Guest

Shieeeeet, you don’t have to tell me twice. ;)

  • hush404

    This, is very kewl.

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

May get this version of VI, I heard about loading issues but being a download game wouldn’t that be cut in half?

  • http://twitter.com/thesupersakura Kristina Wright

I’ve already purchased these titles on my Wii…not sure if I’ll buy them for my PSP/PS3…I may for FF6 but definitely not Chrono, I’d prefer that on the DS.

  • Guest

There are only a handful of games that I wouldn’t mind buying three or four times…

    …These are two of them.

  • GVmanX

Does anyone know if this version of Chrono Trigger has the updated translation that the DS release has?  Also, does this release of FFVI have a more recent translation?

    • Solomon_Kano

No, these are the exact versions that were on PS1.

  • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

Is getting Chrono Trigger for Toriyama artwork reason enough to get this for the PSN, even though the DS got a port and a new translation?

    • Solomon_Kano

I’d say so, but I’m a pretty big fan of Toriyama’s art so I kinda have a bias there lol.

  • Yu_TheKing

Ehrgeiz and Legend of Dragoon for NA Now >:U

  • Solomon_Kano

    Great.

Now all the other PS1 games I want on PSN are waiting on Capcom to do something about them…actually, who’s responsible for PS1 Classics on PSN? Is that up to Sony or the game’s publisher?

Whoever it is, one of them needs to give us Mega Man Legends 1 and 2.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Craig-Mikucki/655263876 Craig Mikucki

It was previously stated that the Legends series is not coming to become a digital download because of voice acting contracts.

      • Solomon_Kano

Ah. I should’ve figured there was something keeping it from coming here when we didn’t get either of the PSP ports. Well, that’s unfortunate. Thanks for the info.

Now, do you have any idea on what’s keeping Capcom from releasing any of the PS1 VS games? Or does nobody know? Because, if there’s still hope for those, I’d like to see them released.

  • BelmontHeir

Sony just tweeted: “Yesterday, we incorrectly reported Final Fantasy VI & Chrono Trigger
coming to PSN this Tuesday. They are not. We apologize for the error.”

    • Solomon_Kano

      Boooo!

  • Yu_TheKing

    Profound Sadness…

  • cmurph666

    Needs more Chrono Cross.

    • KOKAYI5

I want CC, but also why are none of PS2 games behind put on PSN?

  • Michael Vincent

Maybe they will release it soon. ^^. Final Fantasy VI is my favorite game ever and I always put it in high regard above all other games. I play a lot of RPGs to find a game that will rival the story of Final Fantasy VI. ^^

  • PrinceHeir

    lol what a teast :

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=685220688 Vince Vazquez

I don’t care. I’d rather wait and play it on a platform that ISN’T DEAD than go plug my Wii back in, jump through Nintendo’s stupid hoops, dig out my classic controller, recharge my wii remotes and download ‘em from the Virtual Console.

I’ll wait Sony:) Just knowing they’re coming SOMETIME is great news. Same with Sega and Monster World IV for PSN.

  • Kitestwinblades

What a let down :< Well at least its coming and SOMETHING Stirred up a commotion so we should at least get some news sometime in the new feature. This also clears up the Chrono Cross and Trigger confusion I had too. Cross was JUST confirmed as fresh news while FFVI and Trigger are still in the process as well.

  • http://gamecheatstricks.com Aiden Anderson

I wished that they would do it sooner rather than latter… I never played FFVI and this would be the perfect oportunity to fix that.
