Bravely Default: Flying Fairys Job System Is Similar To Final Fantasy V

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy producer, Tomoya Asano, granted Japanese site, Inside Games, a short interview about the game and some of the basic principles behind its development. Prior to Bravely Default, Asano served as producer on Final Fantasy III and Final Fantasy IV for the Nintendo DS, among other games.

Asano describes Bravely Default as a “standard RPG,” complete with random encounters and turn-based battles. The game’s job and battle system are similar to Final Fantasy V. The girl that appears in the game’s augmented reality trailer is one of the game’s four main characters, but we don’t know her name yet.

When asked about the game’s scenario and sound staff, Asano replies that Square Enix are working with people they haven’t worked with before.

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy is slated for release sometime in 2012.

This game just keeps getting more awesome. Random encounters, turn-based combat and a job system? Am I dreaming?

Also, I believe the lady’s name was Garnet til Alexandros XVII~

    • http://twitter.com/furdworetzky Fur Dworetzky

I’m with you on the turn-based combat and job system. Just not so much on the random encounters part.

      • http://twitter.com/Paradox_me Paradox me

I don’t mind ‘em, but I also have a thing for very traditional RPGs.

Plus, when enemies are visible on screen I’ll often find myself skipping too many sooner or later and then I’ll have to go grind. I don’t seem to have this problem as often with random encounters.

        • Ryos

I’m not really a big fan of seeable encounters either.  They tend to be spaced out too far apart and for some reason, most games make it difficult to avoid at least some of the encounters (hence defeating the purpose of being able to see enemies).  Besides, random encounters inevitably have some way for you to be able to reduce or eliminate battles altogether, which in and of itself makes that preferable for me.  I can see why people don’t care for random encounters though, especially for games where the encounter rate is frequent.

The more I see of this game, the more cautiously optimistic I am, though I’m not sure I want more incentives to pick up a 3DS. :P

          • Exkaiser

            Of course you do!

You want to waste all of your money on video games, just like the rest of us!

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Steven-Pierre-Louis/667684607 Steven Pierre-Louis

it could be because you’re kind of forced to grind as you go with random encounter.  With visible enemies at the very least you can skip battle when you don’t feel like fighting.  In old games I used to hate having to do the 300th remedial battle against enemies with the exact same configuration every other fight (“I’m fighting 2 lions, a tiger, and a bear for the 10th straight time!?  oh my!”).  Especially when said enemies are too weak to provide any meaningful reward and I just want to pass through the area.

As long as the encounter rate isn’t too high this won’t be a deal-breaker for me, thohugh.

      • Suicunesol

I don’t quite mind random encounters so long as they’re handled correctly. The main issue with random encounters is that they’re repetitive and too frequent.

However, some RPGs have successfully managed to make random encounters more stomachable. For example, in Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, random encounters were relatively infrequent. And when they did occur, the battles themselves were usually very brief and flashy. You could even speed the battle up by holding A. What’s more, in areas where you had to complete a puzzle to move on, the chance for a random encounter fell dramatically. Not to mention that you still had the option of using an “Avoid” psynergy.

And in Earthbound, while you could see the monsters before you began battle with them, by being a much higher level and by pressing A directly before the encounter, you could instantly kill the monster without entering battle at all, thus preventing a waste of time.

It would be great if Bravely Default could implement some of these convenient improvements~

    • MrRobbyM

I’m gonna jump on boat that doesn’t like random encounters either, but for this game, don’t think I’ll mind it. It sort of feeds my nostalgic side :)

      • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/DrakosAmatras DrakosAmatras

As long as it’s not too hard to buy encounter-avoiding items, I wouldn’t mind random battles.

    • puchinri

      Agreed~!

Except about the young lady. That most certainly was not Garnet. She has much better taste than that.

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/HAEBCODVH3BGFIHE47BKNDXD2I Jonathan

      no, it was Dagger~

  • kenichi_san

Just saw a trailer for this game, and it looks so pretty :3

  • Yukito

FFV is the best FF game to me, but Square Enix making this game nullifies that joy to negative.

    • http://twitter.com/Paradox_me Paradox me

Why? Handhelds are where most of Square’s top quality games can be found this generation.

      Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light
      Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
      Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
      The World Ends with You

That’s a pretty decent track record IMO.

      • Michael Vincent

There’s Dragon Quest IX too. Add that to the list and we get a magnificient track record on the handheld. I like 358/2 days too.

It’s a shame that even if I tell  myself that I don’t like Square Enix, I always end up playing their games a lot.

      • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

I guess that would be a decent track record…if they were working with people whom they worked with before for BD:FF.

    • Christ

Let’s hope FF5 will get a remake like the others did. I don’t care about this game, it can even be a copy of FF5, not gonna play it. I want my FF5 remake :D

  • alundra311

FFV was my favorite Final Fantasy. Looking forward to more info about this game. And I do hope this gets an english release.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

Most people just pass FFV when they counting “must be remake FFs”. I desperately want to see Faris in 3D.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

I hope when they finish this project, they’ll start right after remake of FFV because I’m seriously looking forward for it.

    • alundra311

Maybe they will remake FFV with Bravely Default’s engine and style. I hope.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

Maybe they spring us with they change the title Final Fantasy V and reveal the real characters as FFV characters.

        • alundra311

          That would be awesome.

I was kind of thinking about it the other way around too; that Bravely Default was actually supposed to be a remake of FFV and that they decided to just release it as a new IP instead.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

Yes that is a possibility too. A sad possibility though which means we won’t see a FFV remake sometime near.

      • PrinceHeir

        no no no no :

i want a FFIV Complete Edition style of remake.

though seeing this it could definitely work, but we need to see the gameplay and how the world revolves around first before using this style of remaking.

all in all i just want to play FFV and FFVI.

never played those, and a FFIV Complete Edition style makeove would make me happy. keeping it original while adding tons of stuff and making the best version ever made ^^

        • alundra311

I would love it done in the style of FFIV Complete Edition too. If they decide to go that route, I hope they don’t forget the 3D effects. A combination of 2D sprites and 3D effects is awesome.

          • PrinceHeir

hell yeah the 3D effects were actually really good :D

not to mention if this is running on Vita. expect lightning fast loading times :)

can’t wait to see the gameplay of this though :D

  • http://www.facebook.com/Zekushion Dylan Anantha

The second I saw the words “FF V Job System”, my hype levels skyrocketed. FF V’s job system pretty much put almost every other game’s job systems to shame, even non-FF games.

  • Go2hell66

    hmmmm FFV battle/job system?

    i am okay with this

  • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/DrakosAmatras DrakosAmatras

Oh~ Isn’t this that game where you can poke the fairy in AR Mode?

……Why does it sound like an innuendo when I actually say that out loud?

  • AndyFe

That’s cool because FFV is my favorite Final Fantasy so i don’t mind another game that is based on it at all :)

    • http://twitter.com/FaithlessMr Bruno Silva

My second fav FF! But the game has the most interesting take on a Job System in the series! So this game is already a winner.

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/HAEBCODVH3BGFIHE47BKNDXD2I Jonathan

FFIX is my fave 3D Final Fantasy; which it looks like~

and my favorite of the 2D FF games is FFV; which it will base it’s Job System after~

    • kylehyde

I second this. In fact, my hype for this game grown up since FFV is my favorite FF of the snes trilogy and the job system was the main factor of this.

  • theworldofnoboundries

Well this game is getting better and better. Now hoping that they will announce it here.

My 3DS just can’t wait to poke the little fairy.(Pervert mode activated,)

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

I have yet to play V, but Job systems in general are fine by me.  Traditional gameplay is good for me as well, we needed something like that once in a while.

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

In this day and age Random Encounters and Turn Based Battles are selling points for RPGs.  That being said, Im ready for a standard party based RPG, seems that we have so few now.

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/HAEBCODVH3BGFIHE47BKNDXD2I Jonathan

I could live without random battles; to be fair lol

  • theoriginaled

oof…. first game thats made me desire a 3ds in the slightest. Little bit of a gut check Square Enix. Sigh.. why do I have to be such a fanboy…

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/HAEBCODVH3BGFIHE47BKNDXD2I Jonathan

    Job system, you say?

    ohoho

this has interested me a great deal~

as long as those random battles are not excessive, I’m cool with them o 3o

  • Tom_Phoenix

“Asano describes Bravely Default as a “standard RPG,” complete with random encounters and turn-based battles.”
Square Enix, you have my attention.

I have been craving for a brand new turn-based RPG for a while now. I am getting tired of every RPG being real-time or trying to be. Is having characters and monsters take turns to whack each other really too much to ask for?

    • https://twitter.com/#!/SplashdownTiger STiger

      For the Tales series, yeah.

  • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Meh!, all i care its that is a classic RPG that looks awesome :3!

    • M’iau M’iaut

They still gonna need to do something about the name WHEN IT gets localized.

      • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

I cant even begin to imagine what name they would choose. Going by a few past examples, I never would have guessed Trusty Bell: Chopin’s Dream  guessed  would turn out to be Eternal Sonata or that End of Eternity would be Resonance of Fate. Oh well, I wait in anticipation for what the localized name shall be.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Utku-Savaş/571425196 Utku Savaş

They’ll gonna rename it with Final Fantasy *Something* for overseas release… Just wait and see.

      • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

All i hope that when they localize it we still can poke the girl xD

        • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/DrakosAmatras DrakosAmatras

Yeah… I remember your joy when you relayed those screenshots on Twitter.

  • Rollersnake

I love FFV—I think its gameplay has held up better than any other classic FF’s. I’m glad to see that sort of job system making a return, and I hope this gets a Western release.

  • http://twitter.com/ChestnutBowl Chestnut Bowl

Random encounters? Ugh. My anticipation has dropped dramatically, but I’m still curious about the setting.

  • http://twitter.com/ifarah12 Gren

    FFV=Best FF

not too happy about the random encounters part though

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Leon-Hart/100002316814779 Leon Hart

oh yes Random encounters!! i really looking forward to this!

  • http://gamecheatstricks.com Aiden Anderson

    Great! This looks really promising!
