Square Enix Are Doing Something With The World Ends With You

This week’s issue of Famitsu magazine features an interview with Tetsuya Nomura about Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.

Famitsu asked the creator if Neku’s appearance in the game as a guest character was a hint that Nomura still has plans for The World Ends With You.

 

Replying to the question, Nomura wouldn’t confirm a sequel outright but stated that Neku’s presence could be a hint of something coming and that Square Enix are working on something. For now, that’s as close to an official announcement as we’re going to get.

    Since it’s as good a time as any to speculate, how about a 3DS sequel with more precise touch controls, or a Vita title that does something interesting with the touch screen and touch pad. New characters, throw in cameos of the old heroes being older and wiser, recipe for a neat sequel!

        I suppose my prediction has been conditioned to follow the usual Squeenix sequel-ing conventions :P

      All except for the Vita not having two screens. I personally feel focusing on two screens was a big hook to the gameplay.

        Well, I hardly expect a TWEWY sequel to stick to the conventions, the original was so, well, original it’d seem odd for S-E to go for a by-the-numbers sequel (I am hoping for a sequel to be on 3DS).

    I’m honestly surprised they haven’t milked TWEWY like the FF franchise considering the game’s popularity.

      I’m glad they haven’t milked it and I hope they never will.  Milking can have the effect of diluting, which is exactly what they did to Kingdom Hearts in my book.

        (By my own admission, I never got the whole premise of KH, other than a blatant Disney milking.)

    Well it is about time for Square Enix to make another CG OVA of sorts and TWEWY would make an ideal world for it.

    I just dont see how they could do a followup game for the 3DS due to
    difficulty with quickly looking from bottom to top screen in 3D. I dont
    think it would make sense to make the game have no 3D functionality.

      I think it would be fine to not have 3D. From the start of it in every media, 3D only feels like a gimmick. It isn’t necessary to enjoy any game or movie.

        Any ‘World Ends with You’ sequel that plays like the original would probably be fine without 3D support.

        However, some games really benefit from 3D. Please don’t go on with that drivel that nothing good comes out of 3D.

    come to think about it, the vita’s back is pretty awesome for a game like TWEWY, o-o analog to aim, tap, double tab, scratch, hold, everything is possible :o and both of the character can stay on the same screen, just in a different dimensions, like a different color, 2 HP gauges or something.

    Nice TWEWY is one of my favorite DS games i hope they make a 3ds squeal I don’t know how but it would be cool. Knowing gaming trends of late, it’ll probably be a remake :/

    If it’s game related then it would have to be outsourced because the KH Team needs to work on Versus and KHIII right after. If it’s something like an anime, I’d like that.

      The first one was outsourced, too. It was developed by Jupiter, with Nomura doing the design and overseeing the project.

        I thought the first one was developed by the KH Team and it was co-developed by Jupiter?

          I’m pretty sure only Nomura and two others who also worked on KH helped in the development of TWEWY, everything else was handled by Jupiter.

          Well, more like Jupiter did the hands-on work, while Square Enix did the design.  To my knowledge, the higher-ups in the Kingdom Hearts team designed and supervised the game, while Jupiter did the coding and building. I think they should be able to pull that off again. Higher-level designers are usually capable of juggling a couple of projects at once. :)

    I know it, well not really, but I suspected since some dialogues appear to be kinda suggesting to me. However, this are really great news to me and I hope that it we can see something about the game on the early 2012.

    I hope it’s not a tiny mobile phone game or something. I could totally see them doing that, and I’d much rather have a full-fledged game that’ll help me un-regret the 3DS purchase.
    Also, it looks like Neku hasn’t been eating well since he died. Also, I’ve become my grandmother.

    I’d be happy with a 3DS port, this game needs to be given a second chance for those who haven’t played it yet. I unfortunately was never able to find a copy for sale at a decent price here in Europe, I had to borrow a copy from a friend in order to experience this amazing game, and it’s one of these I’d gladly purchase if it was given a 3DS port or remake or whatever.

    Kinda like Devil Survivor Overclocked on the 3DS.

    And now I play the waiting game where in the future Square Enix will announce TWEWY sequel for 3DS.

    I have yet to play the game but I am getting a copy later can I say that the game was more successful here in the US than Japan? I meant The World Ends With You.

    I’m more excited about the TWEWY part of the game than the whole rest (actual Kingdom Hearts) of it. Isn’t that terrible? ;P

    I love KH, but The World Ends With You blows it out of the water, in all seriousness.

      I’ve played through TWEWY 4 times(each with different pins). I played through KH once, KH2 twice, and KH BBS once. you can already guess what I’m most excited for! I hope they bring back “megs” for the second part cause he technically wasn’t the bad guy.

    Ooh. Never did play the original (listened to some of the music from it though, and it was awesome), so I’ll be sure to pick it up when I get a 3DS.

    With all the great stuff I heard about it, even I’m excited by this.

    A TWEWY sequel might be the only thing that’ll convince me to buy a 3DS.

    I’m really hesitant about TWEWY showing up in KH. I love both games, but for almost completely different reasons. 
      TWEWY is just about my favorite game because of the tight story and the fantastic art direction.   KH I love because its unashamed of its own utter ludicrousness and dives headfirst into such complex and convoluted plotlines despite the premise (have fun with your favorite Disney pals!!), making it work so inexplicably well that I can feel nothing but respect for them.But together? Eh… part of me fears the clash of direction will only serve to tarnish TWEWY for me…

    I would LOVE to see some of the characters from Musashi: Samurai Legend in this since we’re talking about Tetsuya Nomura’s other work being in the game. Hell throw some bouncer into it for good measure too, and I dont mean just a reference to dog street!

      I always thought that the main character from The Bouncer looked like a mix between Sora and Squall.

        The character design of the Bouncer have some vibe of Final Fantasy VIII actually. Nomura tried the same style with characters of FFVIII I think.

         I would personally like to see a World Ends with you Vita Remake if not a sequel on 3DS. It is way to good of a game that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves to just let the series die  imo.

          I really don’t see how world ends with you be played on a vita. It has a touch screen but it doesn’t really have the space for a split screen battle unless you play it vertically. You would have to solely rely on touching the screen to move outside battle which can be a damn pain because holding the PSP vertically (don’t ask why) feels wrong..

        Someone in here also replied my “new FFs are milked with sequels” comment similar way. Yeesh, if you have cows filled up a barn of yours, do you chop all of them with the thought of “hell, we have bunch of cows, why not we eat them all” (see, I don’t care if you are a vegan, it is a metaphorical question so shut up)? This is ridicilous. Some stories have to be leaved as it is.

            If you want to make original games with original idead you mustn’t go to the “easy way”. ‘Hey we already have the engine and modelled characters, monsters and finished environments, so why we won’t do a sequal eh?’. Come on, that was not Square back days. This is just cheap.

        Idunno, sequels even to games I like just kind of bore me unless they were intended all along to have multiple parts, and therefore have incomplete stories.  TWEWY’s story doesn’t beg for continuation and feels like a complete experience on its own.  Keep it simple, imo.  I want to move on to new experiences, no matter how much I enjoyed TWEWY.  The last thing we need to do in this day in age is to beg for more sequels. :

          it doesn’t need to be a straight sequel. it could be a whole new adventure altogether, like all new characters, all new shibuya underground mechanics, and some cameos (like Neku, or Mr. H). new kickass jpop/jpunk/jrock soundtrack, etc.

    I’d buy a World Ends With You 3D, especially if it looked as good as Kingdom Hearts. Ideally, I wouldn’t want Square to touch it though – they did a good job establishing what the game’s formula is with the first one, you can contract another developer to do a sequel now. Y’know; one who’s efficient and won’t take 4-5 years to actually complete the dang thing? Someone competent? Whose made some amazing RPGs this last generation? Like Feelplus or Tri-Crescendo?

    Maybe they are planning to make an HD remake on the Wii U? It just ssems that the touchscreen on the controller is pretty much the core of the game, so if they make a similar game, with 3d graphics, hd resolution, and actual game video scenes and not slideshows, it would certainly beat FF and KH.
